  • Koh Chang Island is located near the east border of Thailand. The government of Thailand promotes the island as a model of eco-tourism spots. The Island undeveloped until recent years, is expected to change to major tourist attraction. 'Digital Koh Chang project' has thus. The main objective of this project is to monitor the environment and land use status of the island and to support its sound development. In March 2003, a field survey of this project was planned and field data were collected using both airborne and ground platforms and an ocean vessel. These data were combined with satellite data in the laboratory. This presentation is all balloon-born system field operation. A 5-meter length balloon filled with Helium gas was used, whose payload consisted of two RGB standard color digital still cameras, two directional rotating servo motors, a camera mount cradle as well as signal transmitting and receiving components. A series of aerial high-resolution digital images were rather easily obtained using this inexpensive system, making it possible to monitor intended landscape features in a specific field. Design of simple, low-cost and easily transportable flying platforms and local field surveys using them are useful for getting local ground truth data to calibrate satellite or airborne-based RS data. The design analysis to upgrade the system is further investigated.

  • Nine plant species were selected through vegetation survey at three military shooting ranges at northern Gyeonggi Province. Plants were germinated in normal soil and three seedlings were transplanted to a bottom sealed pot containing sandy loam soils contaminated with either RDX (291 mg/kg) or TNT (207 mg/kg). Planted, blank (without plant), and control (without explosive compound) pots were grown in triplicate at a green house for 134 days. During cultivation, transplanted plants exhibited chlorosis and necrosis in flower and leaf by explosive toxicity and stress. Only three plants, Wild soybean, Amur silver grass, Reed canary grass, survived in TNT treated pot, while seven plant species except for field penny cress and jimson weed, thrived in RDX treated pot. Appreciable amount of TNT (61.6~241.2 mg/g-D.W.) was detected only in plant roots. Up to 763.3 mg/g-D.W. along with 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, an intermediate of TNT, accumulated in the root of wild soybean. In addition, azoxy compounds, abiotic intermediates of TNT, were detected in TNT treated soils. RDX absorbed average 1,839.95 mg/kg in shoot and 204.83 mg/kg in root. Most of TNT in plant was accumulated in underground part whereas RDX was localized in aerial part. Material balance calculation showed that more than 95% of the initial TNT was removed in the planted pots whereas only 60% was removed in the blank pot. The amount of RDX removed from soil was in the order of Amur Silver Grass (51%) > Chickweed (43%) > Evening primrose (38%). Based on the results of pot cultures, Amur silver grass and Reed canary grass are selected as tolerant remedial plants for explosive toxicity.

  • Skin sooty dapple disease, a fungal disease that lowers Asian pear fruit quality, has emerged recently in Korea but has not yet been thoroughly characterized. This disease affects the surface of fruit, leaves, and young shoots of the Asian pear, typically appearing as a dark or pale black dapple on the fruit surface. The disease initiates on the fruit with small circular lesions that become bigger, eventually spreading to form large circular or indefinite lesions. Sparse dark or flourishing white-greyish aerial mycelia and appearance of a dark or pale black dapple on the fruit surface are typical signs of this disease. The disease was severe during cold storage of the Niitaka and Chuhwangbae varieties, but more limited on the Gamcheonbae and Hwangkeumbae varieties. To identify causal pathogens, 123 fungal isolates were obtained from lesions. The fungi that caused typical skin sooty dapple disease symptoms in our bioassay were identified. Based on their morphological characteristics, 74% of the isolates were Cladosporium sp. and 5-7 % of the isolates were Leptosphaerulina sp., Tripospermum sp., or Tilletiopsis sp. None of the isolates caused severe soft rot by injection to a wound plug, but some of the Cladosporium sp. isolates caused mild maceration. Therefore this microbiol complex cannot account for the soft rot also observed in stored fruits. The high frequency of isolation of Cladosporium sp. from disease tissues and bioassay on pear fruit surface suggest that Cladosporium sp. could be a major pathogen in the microbial complex associated with skin sooty dapple disease of the Asian pear in Korea.

  • The main purpose of this study was to classify forest vegetation effectively using Landsat Thematic Mapper data(June, 1994) in mountainous region. The research area was the Mt. Wolak Experimental Forest of Chungbuk National University, near Chungju and Jecheon city, Chungcheongbuk-do. To classify forest vegetation effectively, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) was used to reduce topographic effects. This NDVI was modified and transformed to the value of 0 to 255, and then the modified values were combined with other Landsat Thematic Mapper bands. To classify forest and land cover types, unsupervised classification method was used. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. Combinations of band "3, 5, NDVI" in Landsat Thematic Mapper data showed a good separation with high accuracy. The expected classification accuracy was 95.1% in Landsat Thematic Mapper data. 2. The Land Cover types were classified into six groups : coniferous forest, deciduous forest, mixed forest, paddy and grass, non-forest, and other undetectable areas. As these classified results were compared with the reconnaissance survey and aerial black and white infrared photographs, the overall classification accuracy was 76.5% in Landsat Thematic Mapper data. 3. The portion of non-forest in Mt. Wolak area was 1.9%. The percentages of coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests were 30.9%, 35.7% and 26.4%, respectively. 4. As these classified results were compared with other reference data, the percentages of coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests increased, but the portion of non-forest was exceedingly diminished. These differences are thought to be from the different research method and the different season of received Landsat Thematic Mapper data.

  • Underground distribution system is a trend due to the successive development of metropolitan area and satellite cities and the environment of the commercial and residential areas. The high quality of electricity, which is related with the minimal outage duration time due to the maintenance work for the underground distribution line, is mandatory. Hence, the construction method and tools for the outage-free maintenance construction have been required for underground distribution system. So far, all the efforts for outage-free maintenance for the underground distribution have been limited only to the survey for foreign countries situation and the theoretical provision; thus, It is required to develop the various construction method and the application tools. Differently from the aerial line, the construction of the underground cable is complicated and the insulation distance between conductor and shield should be maintained in loadmaking/breaking operation, though the apparatus connected with cable is a deadfront type. Also since the apparatus is installed above ground, by-pass of faulted area at busy area needs a variety of high technologies. Therefore, in this these, the authors introduce the development status of the loadbreak connectors, connection facilities, outage-free maintenance system for secondary side, a secondary auxiliary bushing and additional tools so that there can be more progress on this field.

  • Mobile Mapping Systems are effective systems to acquire the position and image data using vehicle equipped with the GPS (Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and CCD camera. They are used in various fields of road facility management, map update, and etc. In the general photogrammetry such as aerial photogrammetry, GCP (Ground Control Point)s are needed to compute the image exterior orientation elements (the position and attitude of camera). These points are measured by field survey at the time of data acquisition. But it costs much time and money. Moreover, it is not possible to make sufficient GCP as much as we want. However Mobile Mapping Systems are more efficient both in time and money because they can obtain the position and attitude of camera at the time of photographing. That is, Image Orientation Technique must use GCP to compute the image exterior orientation elements, but on the other hand Direct Georeferencing can directly compute the image exterior orientation elements by GPS/INS. In this paper, we analyze about the positional accuracy comparison of ground point using the Image Orientation Technique and Direct Georeferencing Technique.

  • This paper analyzed the flood propagation characteristics of each flood elevation due to failure of embankment in Muju Namdae Stream using recursive call algorithm. A flood propagation order by the flood elevation was estimated by setting destruction point at Beonggu and Chasan small dam through recursive call algorithm and then, the number of grids of each flood propagation order and accumulated inundation area were calculated. Based on the flood propagation order and the grid size of DEM, flood propagation time could be predicted each flood elevation. As a result, the study could identify the process of flood propagation through distribution characteristic of the flood propagation order obtained from recursive call algorithm, and could provide basic data for protection from flood disaster by selecting the flood vulnerable area through the gradient pattern of the graph for accumulated inundation area each flood propagation order. In addition, the prediction of the flood propagation time for each flood water level using this algorithm helped provide valuable information to calculate the evacuation path and time during the flood season by predicting the flood propagation time of each flood water level.

  • As we choose ground control points for aerial triangulation, we have a lot of problems in a mountain, a costal area, a desert, the foreshore etc because they don't have clear topography for control points and it spends a lot of cost and occurs problems of accuracy. In this study, we compare and analyze between ground control points from LiDAR intensity, digital map with ground control points from the field survey as doing AT each. As the result, the average error was ${\pm}1.02m$ from using LiDAR intensity, ${\pm}1.13m$ from using digital map. this result can present the control points from LiDAR intensity is 0.11m better than from digital map.

  • Landuse information is used to plan land use, urban and environmental management as base data. And, demand for landuse information is rising due to ecological consideration. But existing method to extract landuse information from aerial photographs or field survey is consume a lot of time and cost. In urban area where the pattern of landuse is densely aggregated, a landuse information needs to be classified in detail for urban planning and management. Therefore this study aims to examine the method to extract landuse information in detail from 1:1,000 digital topographic data. For the purpose, the method was applied to a part of metropolitan Seoul. The results of study shows that extraction of landuse information except forest area is possible. Forest area is needed to describe smaller spatial unit. For the future, the method of describing forest area is improved it will be effectively applicable for the city maintenance.
