  • Arsenic is a highly toxic element, and its contamination is widespread around the world. The natural materials with high selectivity and efficiency toward pollutants are important in wastewater treatment technology. In this study, the mesoporous synthetic hectorite was synthesized by facile hydrothermal crystallization of gels comprising silica, magnesium hydroxide, and lithium fluoride. Additionally, the naturally available clay was modified using zirconium at room temperature. Both synthetic and modified natural clays were employed in the removal of arsenate from aquatic environments. The materials were fully characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) analyses. The synthesized materials were used to remove arsenic (V) under varied physicochemical conditions. Both materials, i.e., Zr-bentonite and Zr-hectorite, showed high percentage removal of arsenic (V) at lower pH, and the efficiency decreased in an alkaline medium. The equilibrium-state sorption data agrees well with the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, and the maximum sorption capacity is found to be 4.608 and 2.207 mg/g for Zr-bentonite and Zr-hectorite, respectively. The kinetic data fits well with the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Furthermore, the effect of the background electrolytes study indicated that arsenic (V) is specifically sorbed at the surface of these two nanocomposites. This study demonstrated that zirconium intercalated synthetic hectorite as well as zirconium modified natural clays are effective and efficient materials for the selective removal of arsenic (V) from aqueous medium.

  • We prepared γ-alumina beads using the amorphous alumina, obtained by fast calcination of gibbsite, and its were immersed in aqueous solution of the mixture of 21.87% nitric acid and 28.57% acetic acid. The beads thus were hydrothermaly treated at 200$^{\circ}$C for 3h, and were investigated changes of crystal, pore characteristics, $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, mechanical strengths and thermal resistance. Acicular platelet crystals of 0.1∼0.3${\mu}$m were transformed into acicular boehmite crystals of 1∼2${\mu}$m having the same crystal structure. Through this changes, we found that reversible phase transformation due to hydrothermal reaction took placed between boehmite and ${\gamma}$-alumina. In comparison to the ${\gamma}$-alumina bead before hydrothermal treatment, $N_2$ adsorption capacity was increased from 450㎖/g to 670㎖/g, and pore volume between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ was increased form 0.15㎖/g to 0.77㎖g, and mechanical strength was increased form 1.4MPa to 2.2MPa. Also, it showed the remarkable thermal resistance which sustained ${\theta}$-alumina crystal structure and pores between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ at 1000$^{\circ}$C in 40vol% steam.

  • This research was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of lanthanum hydroxide for fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. A batch sorption experiments were conducted to study the influence of various factors such as pH, contact time, initial fluoride concentration and temperature on the sorption of fluoride on lanthanum hydroxide. The optimum fluoride removal was observed in the $pH_{eq}{\leq}8.8$. Sorption equilibrium of fluoride on lanthanum hydroxide was better described by the Freundlish isotherm model than by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption energy obtained from D-R model was 9.21 kJ/mol indicating an ion-exchange process as primary adsorption mechanism. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model described well the experimental kinetic data. Thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}Go^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ indicated that the nature of fluoride sorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The used lanthanum hydroxide could be regenerated by washing with NaOH solution. Also, the results applied to real ground water indicate that fluoride selectivity and removal capacity of lanthanum hydroxide were superior to those of PA anion-exchange resin.

  • The cylindrical ${\gamma}$-alumina pellets were prepared by forming, hydration, drying and calcination after mixing amorphous alumina and pore generating agent with water. Concentration of Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$ㆍ9$H_2O$ that was catalyst precursor was fixed and made mixing solution that changed concentration of $CH_3$COOH in range of 2.5~20%, and here ${\gamma}$-alumina pellets were immerged and were hydrothermaly treated for 3 h at $200^{\circ}C$. And then we investigated creation and change of crystal, pore characteristics, $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, changes of acid site and mechanical strengths etc. According to the concentration of $CH_3$COOH, the crystals grew to acicular shape of 0.5~2${\mu}m$ length, and crystal structure showed the pseudo-boehmite structure. When hydrothermaly treated in 10% $CH_3$COOH solution, pore volume between 100~1000 $\AA$ was highest by 0.86 cc/g, and width of hysteresis curved line due to $N_2$ adsorption/desorption appeared as was smallest. When concentration of $CH_3$COOH was in range of 5~15%, new C-H functional groups were formed. Mechanical strength of pellets was highest by 1.35 MPa when $CH_3$COOH concentration was 2.5%.

  • This study has been assessed the influence of applying sewage sludge to soil amendments on the sorption properties, and leaching potential of three commonly used organophosphorus pesticides, Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. A sandy soil with a low content of organic carbon was treated with sewage sludge with a ratio sandy soil sludge ratio of 30:1. The sorption was determined with the batch equilibrium technique. The sorption isotherms could be described by Freundlich equation. The Freundlich constant, K value which measures sorption capacity, were 3.97, 9.94, 22.48 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, Chlorpyrifos in non-amended soil. But in amended soil, K value was 12.58, 28.47, and 61.21 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. The overall effect of sewage sludge addition to soil was to increase pesticides adsorption, due to the high sorption capacity of the organic matter. The effect of sludge on the leaching of pesticides in the soil was studied using packed soil columns. Total recoveries of pesticides in soil and leachate with leaching in soil column, were in the range of about 73∼84%, was reduced with the passage of time. Diazinon moved more rapidly than Chlorpyrifos in the unamended soil due to greater sorption and lower water solubility of Chlorpyrifos. Total amounts of pesticides leached from the sewage sludge amended soils were significantly reduced when compared with unamended soils. This reduction may be mainly due to and increase in sorption in amended soils, as a consequence of the increase in the organic matter content.

  • The coefficients of the hot-air and freeze dried garlic isotherms and the critical water activities of these were estimated to be 0.85-0.94 by the linear regression and 0.58-0.60 by the sensory evaluation and ${\Delta}E$ value. Water adsorption rate(K) of hot-air dried garlic packaged with $48{\mu}m$ low density polyethylene(LDPE) decreased from $0.12g\;H_2O/100g/day\;to\;0.093g\;H_2O$/100g/day with decreasing the package dimension from $0.051m^2\;to\;0.029m^2\;at\;40^{\circ}C$ and 75% RH, and that of freeze dried one decreased from $0.17g\;H_2O/100g/day\;to\;0.12g\;H_2O$/100g/day as the filling weight increased from 50g to 10g in the package of $0.051m^2$. Shelf-life of hot-air dried garlic packaged with $80{\mu}m$ LDPE were 99days at $40^{\circ}C,\;283day\;at\;30^{\circ}C\;and\;455\;days\;at\;15^{\circ}C$ in the 75% RH. The differences of water contents between predicted data with water vapor permeability of the conventional method and experimental data were 0-1.5% in the water content range of around 13-18%, but about 2 in the water content range of around 8-11%.

  • In the present study, we examined biosorption characteristics of heavy metals onto the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) produced by the purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas sp. KH4, which was isolated from a stream in Anyang, Kyonggi-Do. When Cd (100 mg/L) and Cu (100 mg/L) were added to EPS (1.0 g/L) in the optimal condition (Cd; pH 8, Cu; pH 5, $40^{\circ}C$), 84.2 mg/L of Cd and 70.0 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed within 30 min and 10 min, respectively. When 100 mg/L of Cd and Cu were present as mixture, 16.8 mg/L of Cd and 48.7 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed at $25^{\circ}C$, pH 5. The maximum adsorption capacity determined by fitting Langmuir isotherms model was suitable for describing the biosorption of Cd (76.9 mg/g) and Cu (67.1 mg/g) by EPS. The neutral monosaccharide in the EPS determined by GC consisted of arabinose (2.4%), glucose (7.1%) and mannose (90.5%).

  • The Cu-Mn mixed oxide catalysts with different molar ratios of Cu/(Cu+Mn) prepared by co-precipitation method have been investigated in CO oxidation at $30^{\circ}C$. The catalysts used in this study were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ sorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and $H_2$-temperature programmed reduction $(H_2-TPR)$ to correlate with catalytic activities in CO oxidation. The $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms of Cu-Mn mixed oxide catalysts showed a type 4 having pore range of 7-20 nm and BET surface area was increased from 17 to $205\;m^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$ with increasing of Mn content. The XPS analysis showed the surface oxidation state of Cu and Mn represented $Cu^{2+}$and the mixture of $Mn^{3+}$ and $Mn^{4+}$, respectively. Among the catalysts studied here, Cu/(Cu+Mn) = 0.5 catalyst showed the highest activity at $30^{\circ}C$ in CO oxidation and the catalytic activity showed a typical volcano-shape curve with respect to Cu/(Cu+Mn) molar ratios. The water vapor showed a prohibiting effect on the efficiency of the catalyst which is due to the competitive adsorption of carbon monoxide on the active sites of catalyst surface and finally the formation of hydroxyl group with active metals.

  • Carbon neutrality requires carbon dioxide reduction technology and alternative green energy sources. Palygorskite is a clay mineral with a ribbon structure and possess a large surface area due to the nanoscale pore size. The clay mineral has been proposed as a potential material to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and possibly to store eco-friendly hydrogen gas (H2). We report our preliminary results of grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations that investigated the adsorption isotherms and mechanisms of CO2 and H2 into palygorskite nanopores at room temperature. As the chemical potential of gas increased, the adsorbed amount of CO2 or H2 within the palygorskite nanopores increased. Compared to CO2, injection of H2 into palygorskite required higher energy. The mean squared displacement within palygorskite nanopores was much higher for H2 than for CO2, which is consistent with experiments. Our simulations found that CO2 molecules were arranged in a row in the nanopores, while H2 molecules showed highly disordered arrangement. This simulation method is promising for finding Earth materials suitable for CO2 capture and H2 storage and also expected to contribute to fundamental understanding of fluid-mineral interactions in the geological underground.
