  • This study was performed to investigate the factors related to vitamin & mineral supplement use by the adolescents. Nine hundred and seventy-two adolescent boys and girls attending middle or high schools were chosen from various cities and rural communities in Korea. In this study, the factors affecting vitamin & mineral supplement use were analyzed from a self-administered questionnaire. It was found that vitamin & mineral supplements were taken by 31.3% of subjects. High school students(p<.01), female girl students(p<.001), and rural-dwellers(p<.001) took vitamin & mineral supplements more frequently than their complementing groups. The socioeconomic status of the family (p<.01), and supplement consumption by parents and siblings respectively affected the supplement use by the subjects(p<.001). Vitamin·mineral supplements were consumed more often in subjects who perceived their health as poor(p<.001), skipped breakfast(p<.05), and received nutritional information from books or magazines(p<.05). However, food habits and nutritional knowledge score of subjects did not affect vitamin & mineral supplement use. These findings suggest that adolescents take vitamin & mineral supplements commonly, and they tend to use supplements without prescription. Vitamin·mineral supplement consumption seems to be affected by general characteristics, health related variables, and meal management attitudes of subjects. Therefore, nutritional understanding and education are required in regard to the used of vitamin & mineral supplements, and the relationship between balanced diet and good health for the adolescents.

  • This study was designed (1) to examine adolescents' body cathexis, ideal body image, clothing behavior, and clothing purchasing behavior, and (2) to identify gender and age differences. Descriptive statistics, Chi-Square ($\chi^2$) analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Duncan-Test were employed to analyze the data collected from the convenience sample of 729 middle- and high-school students in Gyeongnam, Korea. Adolescents tended to be dissatisfied with their body, while female high school students' dissatisfactory degrees were higher The ideal body image was thinner than normal, and neither gender nor age differences were observed. Adolescents showed higher dependences compared to other clothing behaviors including conformity, fashion, popularity, brand, and exhibition, and gender and age differences were observed. Fit/comfort and clothing displayed in store were most important evaluative criterion and information search method. Adolescents tended to prefer shopping in department store with friends or parents in less than 3 hours. Gender and age differences were observed in those clothing purchasing behavior. • Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in South Korean adolescents is increasing. Adolescents in South Korea currently use liquid electronic cigarettes more than heated tobacco products. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between the use of liquid electronic cigarettes and allergic rhinitis diagnoses among South Korean adolescents. Methods: This study used data from the 17th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2021. Out of a total of 59,066 students, data from 18,869 students who had experience with liquid electronic cigarettes were used in the final analyses. Diagnoses of allergic rhinitis by medical doctors were self-reported as outcome variables. Results: For females, when comparing 'daily users' and 'current users' with 'never users', the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for 'allergic rhinitis' were 2.20 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00~4.84) and 1.49 (95% CI, 1.07~2.09), respectively. For males, when comparing 'daily users' and 'current users' with 'never users', the adjusted ORs for 'allergic rhinitis' were 1.42 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.91~2.22) and 1.41 (95% CI, 1.08~1.84), respectively. Conclusions: The use of liquid electronic cigarettes was statistically significantly associated with increased odds of allergic rhinitis, especially for females. The results of this study will provide a useful scientific basis for establishing public health policy and using the educational data related to the use of liquid electronic cigarettes in the future.

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational design was employed in this study. The main purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between female adolescents' mental health and their perception of family characteristics, such as family adaptability, family cohesion, family type, and family satisfaction, The theoretical rationale for this study is the 3-Dimensionl Circumplex Model that was formulated by Olson, et al. With respect to method, a structured questionnaire was employed to obtain the data. A total of 199 female students(high school second year) were recruited by convenience sampling. Data for this study were collected in October 1994 after a pilot study and pretest of the tools. The research tool used the following four self-report research types : Youth Self-Report (YSR) developed by Achenbach and Edelbrock, Family Adaptability & Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES) III, Family Satisfaction(FS) developed by Olson, et al. and a Demographic Data Sheet. The resulting data were processed using an SPSS PC for a Pearson prod uct-moment correlation coefficient, ANOVA. A linear relationship were found between female students' mental health and their perceived family cohesion(r=-.2237, p<.001), and family satisfaction(r=-.3951, p<.001), but no significant correlations was found between female students' mental health and their perceived adaptability. These findings demonstrated that family cohesion, family type, and family satisfaction were more powerful predictors than family adaptability. This study contributes to nursing practice by demonstrating the usefulness of YSR to differentiate deviant behavior in youth and also by providing nursing interventions designed to promote female mental health.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how family, school and community variables influence internet behavior problems in adolescents. By focusing on sex differences, this study analyzes female as well as male behavior problems. The data used in this study are gathered from 1,046 middle and high school students in a national sampling. The results are as follows. Internet addiction is the most frequently occurring problem. A chi-square test shows that male students have higher experience rates than female students in obscene chatting and violent games. A series of logistic regressions are performed to blow the relative influence of independent variables controlling for each other. In the case of male students' internet behavior problems, region, communications with their parents, interactions with their close friends, and satisfaction with community facilities are significant variables. Interactions with friends are significant in predicting behavior problems of both female and male students. Suggestions and implications with regard to intervention strategies for adolescents are discussed.

  • Background: Adolescent risk behaviors are of concern because they are dangerous in themselves and have negative influences on adult health. Objectives: This study explored six health risk behaviors of a sample representing the adolescent population in Jeju. Methods: Frequency and percentage of risk behaviors were calculated. Additionally, the chi-square test was used to explore whether differences in experimentation with risk behaviors exist relative to gender and schooling levels. Results: There were six major findings in this study: (a) a lower rate of lifetime and current cigarette use among female students compared to male students, (b) a substantial portion of heavy drinkers, (c) a higher rate of lifetime drug use among female students than among male students, (d) a higher prevalence of suicide ideation among female students than among male students, (e) substantial percentages of students who did not usually wear seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, or bicycle helmets, and (f) a substantial portion of students who were not involved in vigorous physical activities. Conclusions: Since a substantial portion of adolescents have been involved with diverse risk behaviors, it is urgent to implement effective intervention strategies to reduce the rates of these behaviors.
