  • This paper is to examine the applicability of ordinary Kriging interpolation(OK) to the p-adaptivity of the finite element analysis that is based on variogram. In the p-refinement, the analytical domain has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing the p-level non-uniformly or selectively. In case of non-uniform p-distribution, the continuity between elements with different polynomial orders is achieved by assigning zero higher-order derivatives associated with the edge in common with the lower-order derivatives. It is demonstrated that the validity of the proposed approach by analyzing results for stress singularity problem.

  • In this paper, assuming that local range information is available, a collision-free path planning algorithm for multiple mobile robots is presented by using Hopfield neural optimization network. The energy function of the network is built using the present position and the goal position of each robot as well as its local range information. The proposed algorithm has several advantages such as the effective passing around obstacles with the directional safety distance, the easy implementation of robot motion planning including its rotation, the real-time path planning capability from the totally localized computations of path for each robot, and the adaptivity on arbitrary environment since any special shape of obstacles is not assumed.

  • In this paper, a mathematical model for the purpose of QRS detection is considered in the case of the occurrence of nonoverlapping pulse-shaped waveforms corrupted with white noise. The number of waveforms, the arrival times, amplitudes, and widths of QRS complexes are regarded as random variables. The joint MAP estimation of all the unknown quantities consists of linear filtering followed by an optimization procedure. Because of time-consuming, the optimization procedure is modified so that a threshold test is obtained. The model formulation with nonoverlapping waveforms leads to a standard procedure covering a segment before as well as after an accepted event. Adaptivity of the detector is gained by utilizing past signal properties in determining threshold for QRS detection.

  • An informed watermarking algorithm is proposed in this work that aids in concealing packet loss errors in video communications. This watermark-based error concealment(WEC) method embeds a low resolution version of the video frame inside itself as watermark data. At the receiver, the extracted watermark is used as a reference for error concealment. The proposed DCT-based algorithm has features of informed watermarking in order to minimize the distortion of the host frame. At the encoder, a predictive feedback loop Is employed which helps to adjusts the strength of the scale factor Furthermore, some of the modified coefficients of the DCT signal are virtually free from distortion by employing bit- sign adaptivity. The performance of the detector is Qualitatively analyzed for error concealment applications where full-frame DCT embedding proved to be more advantageous.

  • Starting from a new dynamic system description novel synchronous machine deterministic observers are proposed. Reduced and full order adaptive observer variations are presented. Based on the feedback linearization control law and the use of deterministic observer a novel control system is built. It meets the requirements of high performance tracking system. Adaptivity to stator and rotor resistance and the torque sensorless application is included. The comparison of the proposed novel control with conventional linear and nonlinear control systems is discussed. The given simulational study includes complete drive system integration.

  • A meshfree multi-scale method has been presented for efficient analysis of elasto-plastic problems. From the variational principle, problem is decomposed into a fine scale and a coarse scale problem. In the analysis only the plastic region is discretized using fine scale. Each scale variable is approximated using meshfree method. Adaptivity can easily and nicely be implemented in meshree method. As a method of increasing resolution, partition of unity based extrinsic enrichment is used. Each scale problem is solved iteratively. Iteration procedure is indispensable for the elasto-plastic deformation analysis. Therefore this kind of solution procedure is adequate to that problem. The proposed method is applied to Prandtl's punch test and shear band problem. The results are compared with those of other methods and the validity of the proposed method is demonstrated.

  • Suppose one is trying to estimate a high dimensional vector of parameters from a series of one observation per parameter. Often, it is possible to take advantage of sparsity in the parameters by thresholding the data in an appropriate way. A marginal maximum likelihood approach, within a suitable Bayesian structure, has excellent properties. For very sparse signals, the procedure chooses a large threshold and takes advantage of the sparsity, while for signals where there are many non-zero values, the method does not perform excessive smoothing. The scope of the method is reviewed and demonstrated, and various theoretical, practical and computational issues are discussed, in particularly exploring the wide potential and applicability of the general approach, and the way it can be used within more complex thresholding problems such as curve estimation using wavelets.

  • An efficient fixed rate adaptive transform coding is described. Adaptivity is provided by assigning more bits to high ac energy blocks and less bits to low ac energy blocks. Practical and relatively simple adaptation scheme is developed. Overall complexity of our scheme is comparable to the Chen and Smith's scheme. The rate will be adjusted in the same manner as in fixed transform coding. Good performance of the proposed scheme is presented in terms of signal to noise ratio compared with the well known Chen&Smith's scheme. Subjective tests are also presented.

  • For the accurate analysis of crack problems, considerable nodal refinement near the crack tip to capture singular stress field with sufficient accuracy to provide a useful computation of stress intensity factor is required. So, in this paper, adaptive nodal refinement scheme is proposed where nodes in restricted cell regions centered at crack tip are arranged in array for enhanced spatial resolution and adaptivity. With only cell-wise adaptive refinement scheme around crack tip fields, singularity of crack tip is sufficiently described to expect a successive crack propagate direction. Through numerical tests, accuracy of the proposed adaptive scheme is investigated and compared with the finite element and experimental results. By this implementation, it is shown that high accuracy is achieved by using iterative cell-wise solution method fur analyzing crack propagation problems.

  • In this study, the adaptive analysis procedure of crack propagation based on the element-free Galerkin(EFG) method is presented. The adaptivity analysis in quasi-static crack propagation is achieved by adding and/or removing the node along the background integration cell that are refined or recovered according to the estimated error. These errors are obtained basically by calculating the difference between the values of the projected stresses and original EFG stresses. To evaluate the performance of proposed adaptive procedure, the crack propagation behavior is investigated for several examples. The results of these examples show the efficiency and accuracy of proposed scheme in crack propagation analysis.
