This research investigates the potential of Adaptive TMDs for tall building damping. The Adaptive TMD under consideration is based on real-time controlled hydraulic dampers generating purely dissipative control forces. The control approach is designed to enhance the Adaptive TMD efficiency for moderate wind loads with return periods below 50 years. The resulting enhanced TMD efficiency is used to reduce the pendulum mass by 15% compared to the passive TMD while still guaranteeing the acceleration limits of the one and ten year return period winds. Furthermore, the adaptive control approach is designed to disproportionally increase the controlled damping force at wind loads with return periods of 50 years and more in order to reduce the maximum relative motion of the Adaptive TMD with only 85% pendulum mass. Compared to the passive TMD with 100% pendulum mass the maximum relative motion is reduced by 20%. Both the pendulum mass reduction and the maximum relative motion reduction significantly reduce the foot print of the Adaptive TMD which is highly desirable from the economic point of view.
This paper presents an approach for designing a fuzzy logic-based adaptive SVC damping In controller for damping low frequency power oscillations. Power systems are often subject to low Frequency electro-mechanical oscillations resulting from electrical disturbances. Generally, power system stabilizers are designed to provide damping against this kind of oscillations. Another means to achieve damping is to design supplementary damping controllers that are equipped with SVC. Various approaches are available for designing such controllers, many of which are based on the concepts of damping torque and others which treat the damping controller design as a generic control problem and apply various control theories on it. In our proposed approach, linear optimal controllers are designed and then a fuzzy logic tuning mechanism is constructed to generate a single control signal. The controller uses the system operating condition and a fuzzy logic signal tuner to blend the control signals generated by two linear controllers, which are designed using an optimal control method. First, we design damping controllers for the two extreme conditions; the control action for intermediate conditions is determined by the fuzzy logic tuner. The more the operating condition belongs to one of the two fuzzy sets, the stronger the contribution of the control signal from that set in the output signal. Simulation studies done on a one-machine infinite-bus and a four-machine two-area test system, show that the proposed fuzzy adaptive damping SVC controller effectively enhances the damping of low frequency oscillations.

This paper discusses the shape control of deformable mirrors for Adaptive Optics in the dynamic range. The phenomenon of control-structure interaction appears when the mirror becomes large, lowering the natural frequencies $f_i$, and the control bandwidth $f_c$ increases to improve the performance, so that the condition $f_c{\ll}f_i$ is no longer satisfied. In this case, the control system tends to amplify the response of the flexible modes and the system may become unstable. The main parameters controlling the phenomenon are the frequency ratio $f_c/f_i$ and the structural damping ${\zeta}$. Robustness tests are developed which allow to evaluate a lower bound of the stability margin. Various passive and active strategies for damping augmentation are proposed and tested in simulation.
In this paper, new application of adaptive neural network to design a ship's Rudder-Roll Damping(RRD) control system is presented Firstly, the ANNAI neural network controller is presented. Secondly, new RRD control system using this neural network approach is developed. It uses two neural network controllers for heading control and roll damping control separately. Finally, Computer simulation of this RRD control system is carried out to compare with a linear quadratic optimal RRD control system; discussions and conclusions are provided. The simulation results show the feasibility of using ANNAI controller for RRD. Also, the necessity of mathematical ship model in designing RRD control system is removed by using NN control technique.
This paper presents an adaptive wide-area damping controller (WADC) based on generalized predictive control (GPC) and model identification for damping the inter-area low frequency oscillations in large-scale inter-connected power system. A recursive least-squares algorithm (RLSA) with a varying forgetting factor is applied to identify online the reduced-order linearlized model which contains dominant inter-area low frequency oscillations. Based on this linearlized model, the generalized predictive control scheme considering control output constraints is employed to obtain the optimal control signal in each sampling interval. Case studies are undertaken on a two-area four-machine power system and the New England 10-machine 39-bus power system, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive WADC not only can damp the inter-area oscillations effectively under a wide range of operation conditions and different disturbances, but also has better robustness against to the time delay existing in the remote signals. The comparison studies with the conventional lead-lag WADC are also provided.

Tall buildings are prone to wind-induced vibrations due to their slenderness whereby peak structural accelerations may be higher than the recommended maximum value. The common countermeasure is the installation of a tuned mass damper (TMD) near the highest occupied floor. Due to the extremely large modal mass of tall buildings and because of the narrow to broad band type of wind excitation the TMD mass may become inacceptable large - in extreme cases up to 2000 metric tons. It is therefore a need to develop more efficient TMD concepts which provide the same damping to the building but with reduced mass. The adaptive TMD concept described in this paper represents a solution to this problem. Frequency and damping of the adaptive TMD are controlled in real-time by semi-active oil dampers according to the actual structural acceleration. The resulting enhanced TMD efficiency allows reducing its mass by up to 20% compared to the classical passive TMD. The adaptive TMD system is fully fail-safe thanks to a smart valve system of the semi-active oil dampers. In contrast to active TMD solutions the adaptive TMD is unconditionally stable and its power consumption on the order of 1 kW is negligible small as controllable oil dampers are semi-active devices. The adaptive TMD with reduced mass, stable behavior and lowest power consumption is therefore a preferable and cost saving damping tool for tall buildings.
In this paper we present a scheme of adaptive backstepping controller for nonlinear system. Backstepping approach has recently been adopted as a design tool for nonlinear control and especially backstepping with modular design used to seperately design controller and identifier. In the modular design the nonlinear damping term is contained in controller for input-to-state stability (ISS). We compare the ISS controller, which used in general case, with the weak-ISS controller that attenuates the effect of nonlinear damping term and prove their advantages and disadvantages by simulation.

Synchronized switch damping (SSD) techniques have recently been developed for structural vibration control using piezoelectric materials. In these techniques, piezoelectric materials are bonded on the vibrating structure and shunted by a network of electrical elements. These piezoelectric materials are switched according to the amplitude of the excitation force to damp vibration. This paper presents a new SSD technique called 'synchronized switch damping on negative capacitance and adaptive voltage sources' (SSDNCAV). The technique combines the phenomenon of capacitance transient charging and electrical resonance to effectively dampen the structural vibration. Also, the problem of stability observed in the previous SSD techniques is effectively addressed by adapting the voltage on the piezoelectric patch according to the vibration amplitude of the structure. Analytical expressions of vibration attenuation at the resonance frequency are derived, and the effectiveness of this new technique is demonstrated, for the control of a resonant cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric patches, by comparing with SSDI, SSDVenh, and SSDNC techniques. Theoretical predictions and experimental results show the remarkable vibration damping capability of SSDNCAV technique, which was better than the previous SSD techniques. The broadband vibration control capabilities of SSDNCAV technique are also demonstrated, which exceed those of previous SSD techniques.
This paper proposes a novel active damping scheme to suppress LCL-filter resonance with only grid-current feedback control in grid-connected voltage-source converters. The idea comes from the concept of the model reference adaptive control (MRAC). A detailed theoretical derivation is given, and the effectiveness of this method is explained based on its physical nature. According to the control structure of this method, the active damping compensator, which is essentially a second order resonant integrator (SORI) filter, provides an effective solution to damp LCL resonance and to eliminate the need for additional sensors. Compared with extra feedback methods, the cost and complexity are reduced. A straightforward tuning procedure for the active damping method has been presented. A stability analysis is illustrated in the discrete domain while considering a one-step delay. Finally, experimental results are presented to validate the analysis and to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method.
As in most industrial processes, the dynamic characteristics of an electric power system are subject to changes. Amongst those effects which cause the system to be uncertain, faults on transmission lines are considered. For the stabilization of the power system, we present an indirect adaptive control method, which is capable of tracking a sudden change in the effective reactance of a transmission line. As the plant dynamics are nonlinear, an input-output feedback linearization method equipped with nonlinear damping terms is combined with an identification algorithm which estimates the effect of a fault. The stability of the resulting adaptive nonlinear system is investigated.
