  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) is one of the most promising technique for next generation wireless broadband communication systems. In this paper, we propose a new bit allocation algorithm in multiuser OFDM. The proposed algorithm is derived from the geometric progression of the additional transmit power of subcarriers and the arithmetic-geometric means inequality. The simulation shows that this algorithm has similar performance to the conventional adaptive bit allocation algorithm and lower computational complexity than the existing algorithms.

  • An adaptive modulation scheme is presented for multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems. The aim of the scheme is to minimize the total transmit power with a constraint on the transmission rate for users, assuming knowledge of the instantaneous channel gains for all users using a combined bit-loading and subcarrier allocation algorithm. The subcarrier allocation algorithm identifies the appropriate assignment of subcarriers to the users, while the bit-loading algorithm determines the number of bits given to each subcarrier. The proposed bit-loading algorithm is derived from the geometric progression of the additional transmission power required by the subcarriers and the arithmetic-geometric means inequality. This algorithm has a simple procedure and low computational complexity. A heuristic approach is also used for the subcarrier allocation algorithm, providing a trade-off between complexity and performance. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms provide comparable performance with existing algorithms with low computational cost.

  • We consider an adaptive bit-loading technique for bit interleaved coded modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(BICM-OFDM) systems. By adjusting transmission parameter of each subcarrier adaptively depending on the subchannel state, the performance of OFDM system can be improved dramatically. In this paper, the number of bits for each subcarrier is allocated to minimize bit error rate keeping the constant throughput for the adaptive transmission technique of BICM-OFDM system which can be applied to real time transmission. Also, We use the discrete Lagrange multiplier method to get the optimum solution under the integer bit allocation constraint. Simulation results show that computational amount of the proposed bit allocation technique is not high and BICM-OfDM system using the proposed technique can get the SNR gain by 2$\~$3 dB over nonadaptive one.

  • Multiuser communication has been an important research area of underwater acoustic communications and networking. This paper studies the use of adaptive orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) in a downlink scenario, where a central node sends data to multiple distributed nodes simultaneously. In practical implementations, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) cannot be perfectly known by the central node in time-varying underwater acoustic (UWA) channels, due to the long propagation delays resulting from the low sound speed. In this paper, we explore the CSI feedback for resource allocation. An adaptive power-bit loading algorithm is presented, which assigns subcarriers to different users and allocates power and bits to each subcarrier, aiming to minimize the bit error rate (BER) under power and throughput constraints. Simulation results show considerable performance gains due to adaptive subcarrier allocation and further improvement through power and bit loading, as compared to the non-adaptive interleave subcarrier allocation scheme. In a lake experiment, channel feedback reduction is implemented through subcarrier clustering and uniform quantization. Although the performance gains are not as large as expected, experiment results confirm that adaptive subcarrier allocation schemes based on delayed channel feedback or long term statistics outperform the interleave subcarrier allocation scheme.

  • This paper proposes a bit allocation algorithm using adaptive bandwidth for ADSL that uses the DMT technology. In certain cases for high attenuation loops the conventional algorithms are unable to assign data bits to the higher frequency tones, due to the power spectrum mask limitation recommended by ANSI Standard, even if the total power budget is not expended. In the proposed bit allocation algorithm, adjacent empty tones that would not be used merge into single tone, then additional bits is assigned to the merged empty tones. Because additional bits is allocated, most of the available power is used. The proposed algorithm show that total bit increase in about 2~9% bits more than about conventional "water-filling" and "bit removal" algorithms and that is able to use about 93% of the available budget Power

  • This paper presents a fuzzy system that estimates the optimal bit allocation matrices for the spatially active subimage classes of adaptive transform image coding in noisy channels. Transform image coding is good for image data compression but it requires a transmission error protection scheme to maintain the performance since the channel noise degrades its performance. The fuzzy system provides a simple way of estimating the bit allocation matrices from the optimal bit map computed by the method of minimizing the mean square error between the transform coefficients of the original and the reconstructed images.

  • In this paper, an adaptive minimum transmit power modulation scheme under constant data rate and fixed bit error rate (BER) for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is proposed. It adjusts the modulation order and allocates the transmit power to each spatial sub-channel when meeting the user's requirements at the cost of minimum transmission power. Compared to the other algorithm, it can obtain good performance with lower computational complexity and can be applied to the wireless communication system. Computer simulation results present the efficiency of the proposed scheme. And its performance under different channel condition has been compared with the other algorithm.

  • In multiuser OFDM systems, subcarrier and bit allocation plays an important role for the efficient resource use. However, in multiuser adaptive allocation as a non-linear problem, it is impractical to compute all to get the best solution because of the complexity. We set the goal of minimizing the transmit power while satisfying the BER and minimum bits required to transmit through the highest fitness combination of subcarriers and users. The proposed improved genetic algorithm employs the diversity of adaptive allocation more than existing genetic algorithm. Therefore, from the numerical simulation results, we find that the proposed heuristic algorithm has more performance than the existing algorithms.

  • In this paper, A progressive coding of mean difference pyramid by Hadamard transform of the difference between two successive pyramid levels has been studied. A block adaptive bit allocation method based on ac energy of each sub-block has been proposed, which efficiently reduces the final distortion in the progressive transmission of image parameters. In our scheme, the dc energy equals the sum of the quantization errors of the Hadamard transform coefficients at previous level. Therefore proposed allocation method includes the estimation of dc energy at each pyramid level. Computer simulation results show some improvements in terms of MSE and picture quality over the conventional fixed allocation scheme.

  • We propose an adaptive resource allocation algorithm with generalized triangular decomposition scheme in downlink multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output channel to maximize the system throughput when we adopt the modulation scheme such as BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM, and 64QAM. The proposed scheme also considers an bit-error-rate performance as well as system throughput while performing resource allocation. We present simulation results to show that the proposed scheme achieves the system throughput up to 2bit difference by capacity and has better BER performance than SVD based resource allocation scheme in all SNR regions.
