  • More than 70 percent of the Korean territory consists of mountain area so development of mountain district is essential to urbanize continuously. Thus, technological developments for risk factors and standards and manuals must be needed to prevent mountain disaster. Risk Management Manual should be made and operated in government legislation related to national disaster, but there is still no Emergency Management Standard Manual and Emergency Response-Practical Manual to prevent mountain disaster. This study suggests the improvement plans that are legislated but not established cleary in the field of disaster in urban area. The main items are like as 1) adaptable standard and practical manual to prevent mountain disaster in urban area, 2) reinforcement between managing department and interagency vertically and horizontally in central and local government organization, 3) Personal SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) not EOP (Emergency Operation Plan), 4) considering 13 items selected by Ministry of Public Safety and Security, 5) schematization with personal action plan, 6) check list to do in the event of mountain disaster, and 7) regular practice per quarter.

  • "Hwangkeumbora" is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a three way cross of Jinbubyeo, Odaebyeo, Fukei126 at Honam Agricultural Reaserch Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA, in 2006. This cultivar has about 110 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting under Korean climate condition. The milled kernel of "Hwangkeumbora" is translucent with non- glutinous endosperm. Amylose content of "Hwangkeumbora" is about 19.3%. "Hwangkeumbora" has better palatability of cooked rice compared with "Odaebyeo" and shows high resistant reaction to the blast, but susceptible to major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice yield of "Hwangkeumbora" is about 5.37 MT/ha under the standard fertilizer level of the ordinary transplanting cultivation. "Hwangkeumbora" would be adaptable for ordinary transplanting in northern plain, mid-mountainous, southern mountainous of Korea.

  • A new soybean variety, "Singang", was released by NICS, RDA in 2008. It is resistant to soybean mosic virus (SMV), which is one of the most serious diseases in soybean production. "Singang" had been developed for seven years by molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) breeding method using recurrent parent, "Sowon", and donor parent, "L29" which has the SMV-resistance gene, Rsv3. Selected promising breeding line, Suwon 242, was evaluated in yield trials for 2 years from 2005 to 2006 at NICS. Regional yield trials were performed for 3 years from 2006 to 2008 in five locations including Jeju. Agronomic characteristics of "Singang" is a determinate growth habit, purple flower color, grey pubescence, yellow testa, light brown hilum and lanceolate leaflet shape. "Singang" showed the similar performance to "Sowon" cultivar. This variety showed 3 days shorter in days to maturity than the check variety (Pungsannamul). The average yield under regional yield trials in five location was 2.78t/ha. It is adaptable to the whole country except for Gangwon province.

This variety was derived from a three way cross Iksan438, YR19105Acp222 and Milyang165. This variety has about 122 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in Honam and Youngnam plain of Korea. It is about 76 cm in culm length and tolerance to lodging. In reaction to biotic stresses, it shows moderately resistance to blast, resistance to bacterial blight pathogen races from $K_1$ to $K_3$, and Rice stripe virus, but susceptible to other major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice of "Deuraechan" has high Quality, midium short grain. The milled rice yield of this variety is about 6.52 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. • A single cross hybrid, Heukjinjuchal, is a black color waxy corn (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at NICS in 2008. Heukjinjuchal was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KBW24 as seed parent and KBW2 as pollen parent. Ear length and ear diameter of Heukjinjuchal was 16.0 cm and 4.4 cm, respectively. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was 89%, similar with that of a check hybrid, Chalok1. It is resistant to Northern corn leaf blight disease and also lodging tolerant. Fresh ear yield of Heukjinjuchal comparable with those of a check hybrid, Chalok1 in regional yield trials for three years. Seed production of this hybrid is relatively easy because of well overlapping period of silking and pollen dispersal between the two parents. This cultivar would be well adaptable to the whole country.

  • 'Yeomyeong', a new welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) variety, is developed by the Bioenergy Crop Research Center, NICS, RDA in 2004. This variety, as interspecific $F_1$ hybrid, is developed by a cross between onion (Allium. cepa L.) and welsh onion (A. fistulosum L). The first cross was conducted in 2003 between MOS8, onion male sterile line and G2, welsh onion inbred line. Horticultural and yield characteristics of this hybrid $F_1$ line was investigated in greenhouse for 2 years from 2004 to 2005 with fall cropping cultivation. It has a single pseudostem plant type, anthocyanin-colored pseudostem, and male sterile umbel. It showed intermediate plant type of the maternal parents in overall plant characteristics. 'Yeomyeong' is fall sawing variety and has higher plant height and pseudostem length than that of check variety 'Gumjang'. The yield potential of this variety was about 130.1MT/ha in greenhouse in spring harvseting season. This variety would be adaptable to the fall sowing cultivation in green house.
