Ultra-wideband(UWB) is a killer technology for short-range wireless communications. In the past, most of the UWB research focused on physical layer but the unique characteristics of UWB make it different to design the upper layer protocols than conventional narrow band systems. Cross-layer protocols have received high attention for UWB networks. In this paper, we investigate the performance of two physical layer schemes: Time Hopping Binary Pulse Position Modulation(TH-BPPM) and Time Hopping Binary Pulse Amplitude Modulation (TH-BPAM) with proposed private MAC protocol for UWB ad-hoc networks. From pulse level to packet level simulation is done in network simulator ns-2 with realistic network environments for varying traffic load, mobility and network density. Our simulation result shows TH-BPAM outperforms TH-BPPM in high traffic load, mobility and dense network cases but in a low traffic load case identical performance is achieved.

In multi-interface multi-channel(MIMC) based tactical ad hoc networks, QoS support for required operational capacity is one of the main challenging issues for multi-hop transmissions. To support QoS in such a harsh environment, we propose a novel MAC scheme to minimize multi-hop as well as per-hop delay. The current IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols should contend to reserve the channel resource at every hop by each sender. The every-hop channel contention results in a degradation of end-to-end delay for multi-hop transmissions. The basic idea of our scheme is to make a "multi-hop reservation" at the MAC layer by using the modified RTS frame. It contains additional information such as destination information, packet priority, and hop count, etc. In addition, we differentiate the contention window area according to the packet priority and the number of hops to deliver packets in the predefined allowed latency. Our scheme can minimize the multi-hop delay and support the QoS of the critical data in real time(i.e., VoIP, sensing video data, Video conference between commanders). Our simulation study and numerical analysis show that the proposed scheme outperforms the IEEE 802.11 MAC.

In this paper, we propose the AMBM(: Adaptive Multi-channel Backoff Machisum) -Mac protocol to provide high throughput for non-safety applications in VANET(: Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks) environment. The proposed protocol guarantees the quality of service of non-safety packets by dynamically adjusting CW(: Channel Window) of WSA(: WAVE Service Advertisement) to maximize throughput between non-safety packets of different priority. It also shows that allocating a large amount of time for channel coordination and time slot reservation for SC and dynamically adjusting CW and CCI as nodes increase to reduces transmission delay than IEEE 1609.9, C-MAC(: Coordinated multi-channel MAC, and Q-VCI(: QoS Variable CCH Interval) protocols.

Multipath routing protocols with load balance, fault tolerance, aggregated bandwidth in Ad-hoc Networks provide improved throughput and reliable route as compared with singlepath routing protocols. However, multipath routing protocols have not been explored thoroughly in the domain of overhead in Ad-hoc Networks. In this paper, we analyze and compare on-demand singlepath and multipath routing with IEEE 802.11 DCF in terms of Routing overhead and MAC overhead. The results reveals that in comparison with singlepath routing protocol, multipath routing mechanism creates more overheads but provides better performance in congestion and capacity provided that the route length is within a certain upper bound which is derivable. The analytical results are further confirmed by simulation.

In this paper, we propose a design method to extend certain cognitive radio (CR) MAC protocols originally proposed only for the one hop applications in distributed CR networks to MANET routing protocols. Among several CR MAC protocols, the opportunistic MAC (called O-MAC) and the opportunistic period MAC (called OP-MAC) are considered, and AODV as MANET routing protocol is used. We implement the protocols using OPNET network simulator, and compare the performances in both MAC and AODV routing environments. With the experiments, we analyze the relationship between MAC and routing performances of the CR protocols.

A ship ad-hoc network (SANET) can provide ships with diverse multimedia services by replacing expensive satellite communications. While ITU-R M. 1842-1, standards for maritime VHF band digital communications, can be used as the specifications of physical layer for SANETs, no standards are specified for higher layers of SANETs. In this paper, we propose a ship ad-hoc communication (SAC) protocol for SANETs, based on medium access control (MAC) and routing protocols for terrestrial ad-hoc networks. SAC protocol is a cross-layer protocol which combines MAC and routing into one algorithm and considers maritime environments, including the existence of neighboring ships, the possibility of routing to a destination, and changing the communication mode in case of VHF channel failure.

Recently, there has been a clear trend towards the application of ad hoc networking technology in civil aviation communication systems, giving birth to a new research field, namely, aeronautical ad hoc networks (AANETs). An AANET is a special type of ad hoc wireless network with a significantly larger scale and distinct characteristics of its mobile nodes. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a simulator to facilitate the research in these networks. In this paper, we present a network simulator, Aero-Sim, for AANETs. Aero-Sim, which is based on the freely distributed NS-2 simulator, enables detailed packet-level simulations of protocols at the MAC, link, network, transport, and application layers by composing simulations with existing modules and protocols in NS-2. Moreover, Aero-Sim supports three-dimensional network deployment. Through several case studies using realistic China domestic air traffic, we show that the proposed simulator can be used to simulate AANETs and can reproduce the real world with high fidelity.
In mobile ad hoc networks, packet loss is unavoidable due to MAC contention, link failure or the inherent characteristics of wireless link. Since TCP relies on the timely reception of TCP ACK packets to progress the transmission of the TCP DATA packets, ACK loss obviously affects the performance due to two main problems: (a) Frequent occurrence of spurious retransmissions caused by timeout events and (b) impairment of the fast retransmit mechanism caused by the lack of a sufficient number of duplicate ACK packets. In particular, since most reactive routing protocols force the packets buffered over a path to be discarded while performing a route recovery, the performance degradation becomes more serious due to such ACK loss. In this paper, therefore, TCP with two piggybacking schemes (called TCP-pgy) is proposed in order to resolve the above-mentioned problems over reactive routing protocols. Through extensive simulations using the ns-2 simulator, we prove that our proposed schemes contribute to TCP performance improvements.
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) allow mobile nodes to communicate among themselves via wireless multiple hops without the help of the wired infrastructure. Therefore, in the MANET, a route setup mechanism that makes nodes not within each other's transmission range communicate is required and, for this, the Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) was proposed as one of the reactive routing protocols well suited for the characteristics of the MANET. AODV uses the hop count as the routing metric and, as a result, a node selects the farthest neighbor node as its next hop on a route, which results in a problem of deteriorating the overall network throughput because of selecting a relatively low data rate route. In this paper, we propose an efficient reactive routing protocol based on the multi-rate aware MAC. Through the simulations, we analyze the performance of our proposed mechanism and, from the simulation results, we show that our proposed mechanism outperforms the existing mechanism.

End-to-end path setup and maintenance are very important for mobile ad-hoc wireless communications, because of the mobility and the limited battery capacity of the nodes in the networks. the AODV routing protocol is the one of mary proposed protocols. However, there are route failure problem with the Proposed protocols between intermediate nodes due to such mobility and exhausted battery characteristics, and this is because only the shortest hop count is considered for the route setup. If route failure happens. Problem such as the waste of bandwidth and the increment of the energy consumption occur because of the discarding data packets in the intermediate nodes and the path re-setup process required by the source node. In addition, it obviously causes the network lifetime to be shortened. This paper proposes a routing protocol based on the AODV routing protocol that it makes use of the remaining energy, signal strength and SNR of the MAC layer resources to setup a path.
