  • In the Heckman-Meyers model, which is frequently referred by IAA, Swiss Solvency Test, EU Solvency II, the assumption of parameter distribution is key factor. While in theory Bayesian analysis somewhat reflects parameter uncertainty using prior distribution, it is often the case where both Heckman-Meyers and Bayesian are necessary to better manage the parameter uncertainty. Therefore, this paper proposes the use of Bayesian H-M CRM, a combination of Heckman-Meyers model and Bayesian, and analyzes its efficiency.

  • This paper introduces a new density estimator which is Hellinger consistent under a simple condition. A number of issues are discussed, such as extension to Kullback-Leibler consistency, robustness, the Bayes version of the estimator and the maximum likelihood case. An illustration is presented.

  • Various estimators of two risk measures of a specific financial portfolio, Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall, are compared for each case of 1-day and 10-day horizons. We use the Korea Composite Stock Price Index data of 20-year period including the year 2008 of the global financial crisis. Indexes of five foreign stock markets are also used for the empirical comparison study. The estimator considering both the heavy tail of loss distribution and the conditional heteroscedasticity of time series is of main concern, while other standard and new estimators are considered too. We investigate which estimator is best for the Korean stock market and which one shows the best overall performance.

  • The elementary school curriculum includes some statistical concepts and many graphical methods. However, statistical concepts are difficult to understand; consequently, many of those graphs and numerical summaries are obtained by hand. We develop an intuitive statistics education package called Tong-Gramy focused on 5-8 graders to help students and teachers study statistics. This software covers numerical and graphical statistics that appear in 5-8 graders' textbooks. The graphs provided are dynamically linked to data and every graph is linked to every datum. The graphs of Tong-Gramy are dynamic graphs and morphing technology is used where applicable.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to suggest a method for financial projection of health insurance expenditures that reflects future changes in demographic structure. Methods: Using data associated with the number of patients and health insurance cost per patient, generalized linear models (GLM) were fitted with demographic explanatory variables. Models were constructed separately for individual medical departments, types of medical service, and types of public health insurance. Goodness-of-fit of most of the applied GLM models was quite satisfactory. By combining estimates of frequency and severity from the constructed models and results of the population projection, total annual health insurance expenditures were projected through year 2060. Results: Expenditures for medical departments associated with diseases that are more frequent in elderly peoples are expected to increase steeply, leading to considerable increases in overall health insurance expenditures. The suggested method can contribute to improvement of the accuracy of financial projection. Conclusion: The overall demands for medical service, medical personnel, and relevant facilities in the future are expected to increase as the proportion of elderly people increases. Application of a more reasonable estimation method reflecting changes in demographic structure will help develop health policies relevant to above mentioned resources.

  • Modern statistics is used in many fields; however many users face difficulties in understanding statistical concepts. On the other hand, elementary school curriculum covers stem and leaf plot, pie chart, charts for proportional data as well as descriptive statistics including the mean. We find that an "intuitive" statistical package focused on 5-8 graders for statistical education will help future statistics users understand statistical concepts at earlier stages of their lives.

  • Insurers face increasing demands for cyber liability; entailed in part by a variety of new forms of risk of data breaches. As data breach occurrences develop, our understanding of the volatility in data breach counts has also become important as well as its expected occurrences. Volatility clustering, the tendency of large changes in a random variable to cluster together in time, are frequently observed in many financial asset prices, asset returns, and it is questioned whether the volatility of data breach occurrences are also clustered in time. We now present volatility analysis based on INGARCH models, i.e., integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity time series model for frequency counts due to data breaches. Using the INGARCH(1, 1) model with data breach samples, we show evidence of temporal volatility clustering for data breaches. In addition, we present that the firms' volatilities are correlated between some they belong to and that such a clustering effect remains even after excluding the effect of financial covariates such as the VIX and the stock return of S&P500 that have their own volatility clustering.

  • Simulations are important for survival analyses that deal with censored data. Cox models are widely used in survival analyses, therefore, we investigate how to generate censored data that can simulate the Cox model. Bender et al. (Statistics in Medicine, 24, 1713-1723, 2005) provided a parametric method for generating survival times, but we need to generate censoring times as well as survival times to simulate the censored data. In addition to the parametric method for generating censored data, a nonparametric method is also proposed and applied to a real data set.

  • Despite the success of recent genome-wide association studies investigating longitudinal traits, a large fraction of overall heritability remains unexplained. This suggests that some of the missing heritability may be accounted for by gene-gene and gene-time/environment interactions. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian variable selection method for longitudinal genetic data based on mixed models. The method jointly models the main effects and interactions of all candidate genetic variants and non-genetic factors and has higher statistical power than previous approaches. To account for the within-subject dependence structure, we propose a grid-based approach that models only one fixed-dimensional covariance matrix, which is thus applicable to data where subjects have different numbers of time points. We provide the theoretical basis of our Bayesian method and then illustrate its performance using data from the 1000 Genome Project with various simulation settings. Several simulation studies show that our multivariate method increases the statistical power compared to the corresponding univariate method and can detect gene-time/ environment interactions well. We further evaluate our method with different numbers of individuals, variants, and causal variants, as well as different trait-heritability, and conclude that our method performs reasonably well with various simulation settings.
