  • The prediction of time-dependent column shortening is essential for tall buildings considering both strength and serviceability aspects. The Column shortening of tall buildings with transfer floor should be calculated considering the long-term deflection of transfer girder. In this study, both the column shortening and the deflection of transfer girder of 45-story tall concrete building are predicted. The column shortening considering deflection of transfer girder are compared with the actual column shortening by field measurement.

  • Accurate load modeling is essential for power system static and dynamic analysis. By the nature of the problem of parameter estimation for power system load modeling using actual measurements, multiple local optimal solutions may exist and local methods can be trapped in a local optimal solution giving possibly poor performance. In this paper, Trust-Tech, a novel methodology for global optimization, is applied to tackle the multiple local optimal solutions issue in measurement-based power system load modeling. Multiple sets of parameter values of a composite load model are obtained using Trust-Tech in a deterministic manner. Numerical studies indicate that Trust-Tech along with conventional local methods can be successfully applied to power system load model parameter estimation in measurement-based approaches.

  • An application of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM) is investigated for the measurement of 3-dimensional profiles of the macro-machined patterns of which critical dimensions lie in the range of submicrometers. Special emphasis of this investigation is given to extending the measuring ranges of STM upto the order of several micrometers while maintaining superb nanometer measuring resolution. This is accomplished by correcting hysteresis effects of piezoelectric actuators by using non-linear compensation models. Detailed aspects of design and control of a prototype measurement system are described with some actual measuring examples in which fine It patterns can successfully be traced with a resolution of 1 nanometer over a surface range of $4{\times}2$ micrometers.

  • This paper descries the effect of the stylus tip size on the measuring error in surface topography measurement. To analyze the distortional effect of an actual surface geometry originating from the finite stylus size, the surface is modeled as a sinusoid and the stylus tip as a circle. the measuring error is defined as the ratio of the standard deviation of a tracing profile and an original profile. It is shown that this measuring error depends on the amplitude and wavelength of an original profile. In this paper, the spectrum analysis is applied to investigate the distortional effect due to the mechanical filtering of the stylus in the frequency domain. and, the cumulative power spectrum is applied to determinate the minimum wavelength limits to be measured with the various stylus tip radius from these results, a new method to select proper stylus tip radius is proposed.

  • Knowledge of a power semiconductor's operating temperature is important in circuit design and converter control. Designing appropriate circuitry that does not affect regular circuit operation during virtual junction temperature measurement at actual operating conditions is a demanding task for engineers. The proposed method enables virtual junction temperature estimation with a dedicated modified gate driver circuit based on real-time measurement of a semiconductor's quasi-threshold voltage. A simulation was conducted before the circuit was designed to verify the concept and to determine the basic properties and potential drawbacks of the proposed method.

  • A parallel manipulator has high stiffness and all the joint errors on the device are not accumulated at the end -effector unlike a serial manipulator. These are the reasons why the parallel manipulator has been widely used in many fields of industry. In the parallel manipulator, it is very important to predict the exact pose of the end-effector when we want to control the end-effector motion. Installation errors have to be determined in order to predict and control the actual position and pose of the end-effector. This paper presents an algorithm to find the whole 36 joint error components with joint clearance errors and measurement errors considered, when a link length measurement sensor is used and data more than 36 times are acquired for 36 different configurations. A simulation test using this algorithm is performed with a Matlab program which uses the Levenberg-Marquardt method that is known to be efficient for non-linear optimization.

  • Tall Buildings have been popular in recent years. Tall buildings require special consideration to design and construction due to their structural features. Column shortening is one of the important technologies to be considered in. The long-term deformations of concrete cause vertical shortening on cores and columns, trigger deformations on cladding, partitions and finishes, and damage their serviceability. This also affects structural stability by inducing unexpected stress to the structural members such as outrigger. The main objective of this paper is to re-evaluate column shortening according to revised field information and to compare the analysis results with the actual field measurement. Mok-Dong Hyperion, a 69-story apartment building which is currently under construction, was chosen for the case study.

  • Laser scanning technology is a maturing measurement technology which is capable of obtaining 3D measurement data of objects with high-accuracy, high-resolution and in a short time. Laser scanners are used more and more as surveying instruments for various applications. This paper describes the procedure of 3D data acquirement using terrestrial LiDAR and section drawing extraction through a series of processing for remodeling the interior of a department building. Accurate drawings are needed for improvement construction of building interior. However if the design drawings of that time of construction work were lost or damaged or actual dimensions of drawings differ from those of design drawings, the interior should be resurveyed. In this study, the extraction process of interior plane figures were suggested through using laser scanning and related reverse engineering software

  • The Study has analyzed the overall material properties, the measurement of forming colors and applicability of color concrete through making color concrete using red mud heated at 800℃mixed with existing pigment and applying it to the actual field. As the results, the slump flow and aeration meet the target value and the compressed strength of the concrete mixed with red mud and pigment is higher than that of the plain. In addition, the measurement of forming colors turn out to be satisfactory and the color forming is excellent. In the field application, the color concrete panel is proved to make sure the beauty of store exits through its various design available.

  • In this paper, a method has been proposed for error measurement/diagnosis of CNC machine tools using the ball link bar on three dimensional space. For the circular motion error measurement, deviation between the desired and actual test path has been measured and analysed using a new type of ball link which incorporates ideal three point contact between reference balls and sockets. Computer program for the error evaluation has been developed and implemented under PC environment. Using the developed program, the circular test data on a CNC machine tool have been analysed, and thus, machine tool errors were effectively evaluated.
