  • Background: Circumcision is a painful intervention frequently performed in pediatric surgery. We aim to compare the efficacy of caudal block versus dorsal penile block (DPNB) under general anesthesia for children undergoing circumcision. Methods: This study was performed between July 1, 2009 and October 16, 2009. Fifty male children American Society of Anesthesiolgists physical status classification I, aged between 3 and 12 were included in this randomized, prospective, comparative study. Anesthetic techniques were standardized for all children. Patients were randomized into 2 groups. Using 0.25% 0.5 ml/kg levobupivacain, we performed DPNB for Group 1 and caudal block for Group 2. Postoperative analgesia was evaluated for six hours with the Flacc Pain Scale for five categories; (F) Face, (L) Legs, (A) Activity, (C) Cry, and (C) Consolability. For every child, supplemental analgesic amounts, times, and probable local or systemic complications were recorded. Results: No significant difference between the groups (P > 0.05) was found in mean age, body weight, anesthesia duration, FLACC pain, and sedation scores (P > 0.05). However, on subsequent measurements, a significant decrease of pain and sedation scores was noted in both the DPNB group and the caudal block group (P < 0.001). No major complication was found when using either technique. Conclusions: DPNB and caudal block provided similar postoperative analgesic effects without major complications for children under general anesthesia.

  • Horsehair or gordian worms (Nematomorpha) were identified with 22 genera (Gordiida) and 5 marine species (Nectonema) until now. During juvenile phase in development, they gain parasitic activity in arthropods. In this study, a gordian worm was detected in the feces of a dog living in Nonsan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Using this worm, we evaluated the morphological characteristics by light microscopic analysis. Furthermore, the morphological classification was re-evaluated by scanning and transverse electron microscopes. The worm was determined that it is male adult having a bi-lobed tail and male gonads in cross sections. Based on the morphological characteristics including cross sections of body and areole on the cuticle, the parasite was also identified as Gordius sp. (Nematomorpha: Gordiidae).

  • In this study, we designed a model that can measure the level of user's concentration by measuring and analyzing EEG data of the subjects who are performing Continuous Performance Test based on visual stimulus. This study focused on alpha and beta waves, which are closely related to concentration in various brain waves. There are a lot of research and services to enhance not only concentration but also brain activity. However, there are formidable barriers to ordinary people for using routinely because of high cost and complex procedures. Therefore, this study designed the model using the portable EEG measurement device with reasonable cost and Visual Continuous Performance Test which we developed as a simplified version of the existing CPT. This study aims to measure the concentration level of the subject objectively through simple and affordable way, EEG analysis. Concentration is also closely related to various brain diseases such as dementia, depression, and ADHD. Therefore, we believe that our proposed model can be useful not only for improving concentration but also brain disease prediction and monitoring research. In addition, the combination of this model and the Brain Computer Interface technology can create greater synergy in various fields.

  • Working memory (WM), which plays a vital role in daily activities, is a memory system that temporarily stores and processes information when people are engaged in complex cognitive activities. The influence of music on WM has been widely studied. In this work, we conducted a series of n-back memory experiments with different task difficulties and multiple trials on 14 subjects under the condition of no music and Alpha wave leading music. The analysis of behavioral data show that the change of music condition has significant effect on the accuracy and time of memory reaction (p<0.01), both of which are improved after the stimulation of Alpha wave music. Behavioral results also suggest that short-term training has no significant impact on working memory. In the further analysis of electrophysiology (EEG) data recorded in the experiment, auto-regressive (AR) model is employed to extract features, after which an average classification accuracy of 82.9% is achieved with support vector machine (SVM) classifier in distinguishing between before and after WM enhancement. The above findings indicate that Alpha wave leading music can improve WM, and the combination of AR model and SVM classifier is effective in detecting the brain activity changes resulting from music stimulation.

  • This research is to raise awareness of food safety by designing and supporting a hazard food information notification platform for consumers. To this end, the design was carried out by dividing the process into a data extraction process, an application screen design process, and a CNN-based food inference process. Data was collected through public data APIs and crawling, and it was sent to each activity screen designed for Android studios so that it could be output. As a result, when the platform is executed, information on hazardous food names, registration dates, food classification, manufacturing dates, recovery grades, recovery reasons, recovery methods, company names, barcode numbers, and packaging units can be intuitively and conveniently checked. In addition, CNN-based food inference processes allowed mobile cameras to infer harmful food and applied various quantization techniques such as Dynamic Range, Integer, and Float16 to compare the degree of improvement in inference performance. As a result, the group that applied basic quantization and treated device resources with GPU showed the greatest improvement in inference performance. Through this platform, it is expected that the reliability of food safety will be improved by making it more convenient for consumers to recognize food risks.
