  • The present study purposed to examine differences between 20s and 40s in visuospatial performance, the number of activated yokels and cerebral lateralization using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). For this study, eight college students in their twenties (21.5 years on the average) and six adults in their forties (45.7 years on the average) participated in the experiment. Functional brain images were taken from 37 MRI using the single-shot EPI method. Compared to the twenties the forties showed lower visuospatial performance and longer reaction time. In addition, compared to the twenties the forties had a smaller number of activated yokels and less cerebral lateralization. The results of this study show that people's visuospatial performance and number of activated yokels decrease with aging. In addition, they also suggest that cerebral lateralization decreases in order to supplement the lowering of visuospatial performance, which in turn symmetrizes the activation of the left and right hemisphere.

  • Abstract 0.2 wt % $Fe_2O_3$ doped $SrTiO_3$ single crystals were grown by floating zone method in air and Nz atmosphere, respectively. The growth rate was fixed at 5 mm/hr and rotation speed was maintained at 30 rpm. As - grown crystals were cut perpendicular to its growth direction and then, annealed at 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in Nz atmosphere. Resistivities of each samples were measured and then converted into conductivities. By using these conductivity values, the activation energies were calculated and by means of the calculated activation energies, mechanism which contribute to increasing the electrical conductivity were investigated.

  • To estimate the thermal characteristics and toxic parameters on styrene copolymers, We have investigated the activation energy, physical features and generation possibility of toxic material like narcotic gases. The activation energy was 25${\~}$50 Kcal/mol by the Kissinger's and DSC method at high temperature decomposition. It will be good information to estimate the possibility of fire occurrence. From calculations of FED, the values of $LC_{50}$ for PS, SAN and ABS were checked as 8,580, 265 and 308 $mg/m^3$ The mechanisms of thermal decomposition were mainly estimated by main chain scission, not by side group on FT-IR analysis.

  • This paper focuses on the combustion characteristics of blended coals with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals under air and oxy-fuel combustion conditions. The effects of oxygen concentration and blending ratio on the combustion characteristics were experimentally investigated using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). Characteristic temperatures including ignition, burnout temperature and activation energy were determined from TG and DTG combustion profiles. As oxygen concentration increased and the presence of sub-bituminous coal, characteristic temperatures and activation energy decreased. The ignitability, reactivity and kinetics have all been greatly improved under oxy-fuel combustion conditions. Based on this, co-firing with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals under oxy-fuel combustion conditions may be suggested as an alternative method to the fuel flexibility and cost-effective power production with carbon capture and sequestration.

  • In this study, several kinds of active carbons with high specific surface area and micro pore structure were prepared from the coconut shell charcoal using chemical activation method. The physical property of prepared active carbon was investigated by experimental variables such as activating chemical agents to char coal ratio, flow rate of inert gas and temperature. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH and NaOH was successfully able to make active carbons with high surface area of $1900{\sim}2500m^2/g$ and mean pore size of 1.85~2.32 nm. The coin cell using water-based binder in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1 vol%) showed better capacity than that of oil-based binder. Also, it was found that the coin cell of water-based binder shows an improved cycling performance and coulombic efficiency.

  • Objective : Melanin is one of the most important facor in skin color. Melanin protects human skin from ultraviolet radiation otherwise it causes melanin pigmentation. So this experiment is carried out for test whether Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi(SBG) inhibits melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity in mouse B16 melanoma cells. Method : The melanin synthesis inhibition effects of SBG were examined by in vitro melanin production assay. We assessed inhibitory effects of SBG on melanin contents from B16F1 melanoma cell, on tyrosinase activity(cell and cell free system), effect of SBG on the expression tyrosinase, Microphthalmia-associated Transcription Factor(MITF), Extracellular signal-regulated Kinase(ERK). Result : SBG inhibited melanin synthesis induced $\alpha$-MSH($\alpha$-Melanin Stimulating Hormone) in B16F1. SBG inhibited tyrosinase activity and expression. And SBG down-regulates MITF and stimulated ERK activation in B16F1. Conclusion : According to above results, SBG was improved its suppression effect to the inhibition of melanin synthesis, tyrosinase activation, and tyrosinase promotor activation. So SBG is considered to be used for an strong source of skin whitening effect.

  • The effects of temperature on nitrification of enriched nitrifiers were investigated by using kinetics and thermodynamics method through the batch test. Aquaculture recirculating water, which was sampled at Chung Cheong Buk-Do Inland Fisheries Research Institute, was analized to observe the characteristics of nitrification. Temporal variation of ammonium, nitrite and nitrate concentration was measured at batch experiments. Activation energy was calculated using Arrhenius equation with the oxidation rates of specific ammonium or nitrite ion. These oxidation rates were measured at temperature range of $6-35^{\circ}C$ and ammonium concentration range of 0.2-1.8 mg/L. Two distinct activation energy of Nitrosomonas sp. at temperature $6-15^{\circ}C\;and\;15-35^{\circ}C$ was 93.1 and 25.0 KJ/mol, respectively. Nitrate accumulation was observed at temperature over $15^{\circ}C.$

  • Background: Capparis spinosa L., a Uygur medicine, had been shown to have anti-tumor activity in our early experiments with an N-butanol extract (CSBE) as its active fraction. However, the mechanisms responsible for its effects are not clearly understood. Here, we report that treatment of SGC-7901 cells with CSBE resulted in dose-dependent reduction of cell viability and induction of apoptosis. Materials and Methods: To observe the inhibitory and killing effects of CSBE on SGC-7901, the SRB method was adopted, apoptosis being observed by electron microscopy. To clarify the mechanisms of apoptosis, Western blot and enzyme-labeled methods were used to examine the release of cytochrome c (Cyt c) and the activation of the caspase cascade. Results: By electron microscopy, apoptotic morphologic changes were detectable after CSBE administration. In this study, it was also demonstrated that CSBE induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells by inhibiting mPTP open, mitochondrial cytochrome c release, caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation. Conclusions: The findings indicated that CSBE induces aap optosis through mitochondrial pathway.
