Several activated carbon in different specific surface area was prepared by steam and chemical activation of coconut shell. Products were characterized by BET ($N_2$) at 77K, and probed to be highly specific surface area of $1580m^2/g$ and pore volume that had increased with activating conditions. And also we have analyzed the adsorption efficiency of vapor phase components in cigarette mainstream smoke in order to evaluate the relationship between thesmoke components and the physicochemical properties of activated carbons. As a result of this study, the delivery of mainstream smoke was directly affected by the specific surface area and the pore size of activated carbon. The activated carbon prepared by steam activation exhibited better adsorption efficiency on the vapor phase components in mainstream smoke compared with activated carbon prepared by $ZnCl_2$, due to the higher micro-pore area of 66%. But the adsorption efficiency of semi-volatile matters such as phenolic components in a main stream smoke by the activated mesoporous carbon prepared by $ZnCl_2$ is more effective. From the these results, we can conclude that specific surface area by the micropore area increased the adsorption efficiency of activated carbon on vapour phase components, but semi-volatiles or particulate matter was affected by the ratio of mesopore area in total specific surface area.
In this study, mercury vapor adsorption behaviors for some kinds of porous materials having various pore structures were investigated. The specific surface area and pore structures were studied by BET and D-R plot methods from $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. It was found that the micropore materials (activated carbons, ACs) showed the highest mercury adsorption capacity. In a comparative study of mesoporous materials (SBA-15 and MCM-41), the adsorption capacity of the SBA-15 was higher than that of MCM-41. From the pore structure analysis, it was found that SBA-15 has a higher micropore fraction compared to MCM-41. This result indicates that the mercury vapor adsorptions can be determined by two factors. The first factor is the specific surface area of the adsorbent, and the second is the micropore fraction when the specific surface areas of the adsorbent are similar.
Lignocellulosic biomass conversion to biofuels such as ethanol and other value-added bio-products including activated carbons has attracted much attention. The development of an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly pretreatment process is a major challenge in lignocellulosic biomass to biofuel conversion. Although several modern pretreatment technologies have been introduced, few promising technologies have been reported. Microwave irradiation or microwave-assisted methods (physical and chemical) for pretreatment (disintegration) of biomass have been gaining popularity over the last few years owing to their high heating efficiency, lower energy requirements, and easy operation. Acid and alkali pretreatments assisted by microwave heating meanwhile have been widely used for different types of lignocellulosic biomass conversion. Additional advantages of microwave-based pretreatments include faster treatment time, selective processing, instantaneous control, and acceleration of the reaction rate. The present review provides insights into the current research and advantages of using microwave-assisted pretreatment technologies for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable sugars in the process of cellulosic ethanol production.
The purpose of this study was carried out to estimate removal possibility of IBMP and IPMP causing odor in raw water. As a result of Freundlich isotherm. IBMP was superior to IPMP in adsorptive capacity. Adsorptive capacities of activated carbon were found to be in order of Lignite, Coconut shell, and Charcoal. These were well fitted with Freundlich isotherm. According to adsorption breakthrough tests for Lignite GAC, breakthrough time of IPMP and IBMP were 5.7hr and 5.5hr, respectively. Because adsorptive capacities of target material were very different with pore size distribution, it seemed that Lignite and Coconut shell based activated carbons were recommended in order to remove door compounds.
The Carbon source to enhance the denitrification is essential matter in the advanced sewage treatment. For the high level of nutrient removal, external carbons such as ethanol, methanol, volatile fatty acids and so on should be needed. In this study, the methods to increase the sludge solubilization and acidification rate were compared with waste activated sludges and food waste leachate. Ultrasonication and acids were used for the pretreatment of organic particles in sludges. As a results, the optimal temperature and HRT were $60^{\circ}C$ and 5 days, respectively. HAc, HPr, HBr, and other VFAs for acid fermentations reduced up to 22, 16, 14, and 48% with HRT reduction. For the increase of solubilization, 28% of solids destruction rate was shown at 0.3 watts/mL.
In this study, the relationship between the pore size distribution and the adsorption amount of adsorbates is investigated in detail. Adsorption amounts of non-polar adsorbates were greater than those of polar adsorbates because of slight negative charge on surfaces of adsorbents. The adsorption of benzene on the surface of absorbents was largely influenced by the specific pore size of $2{\sim}4$ times of benzene diameter. But in case of toluene, the adsorption of toluene was affected by pore sizes of $2{\sim}4$ times as well as $4{\sim}6$ times of the diameter of toluene. Both acetone and MEK were examined by the same method. The adsorption of acetone was influenced by pore sizes of $2{\sim}4$ times of the diameter of acetone. But acetone does not look to be built up multi-layer on those pore sizes. Since acetone molecule is small and its mobility is so fast, it is assumed that the adsorption and desorption of acetone is simultaneously occurred at the same time even at room temperature. In case of MEK, MEK was effected by pore sizes of $2{\sim}4$ times of the diameter of MEK.

Commercial activated-carbon used as the electrode material of an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) was posttreated with various acids and alkalis to increase its capacitance. The carbon samples prepared were then heat-treated in order to control the amount of acidic functional groups formed by the acid treatments. Coin-type EDLC cells with two symmetric carbon electrodes were assembled using the prepared carbon materials and an organic electrolyte. The electrochemical performance of the EDLC was measured by galvanostatic charge-discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among the various activated carbons, the carbon electrodes (CSsb800) prepared by the treatments of coconutshell-based carbon activated with NaOH and $H_3BO_5$, and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ under a flow of nitrogen gas, showed relatively good electrochemical performance. Although the specific-surface-area of the carbon-electrode material ($1,096m^2/g$) was less than that of pristine activated-carbon ($1,122m^2/g$), the meso-pore volume increased after the combined chemical and heat treatments. The specific capacitance of the EDLC increased from 59.6 to 74.8 F/g (26%) after those post treatments. The equivalent series resistance of EDLC using CSsb800 as electrode was much lower than that of EDLC using pristine activated carbon. Therefore, CSsb800 exhibited superior electrochemical performance at high scan rates due to its low internal resistance.

The adsorption ability of polar and toxic substance was greatly enhanced by treating activated carbon with acid solution and impregnating iron, copper, or silver by using in 0.1 M $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O,\;CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O,\;AgNO_3$ 300 mL per activated carbon 50 g. Physical and chemical properties of the metal impregnated activated carbons were measured using specific surface area, pore volume and size distribution, scanning eletron microscope(SEM), adsorption isotherm. When activated carbon was treated with acid, the quantity of impregnated metal increased about 1.3 times since the micropores were converted to mesopores or macropores. Both the physical absorption by micropores and chemical absorption by metal ions could be achieved simultaneously with the metal impregnated activated carbon because the capacity of micro pores did not change even after metal ions were impregnated.
In this study, we used coal-based activated carbons and charcoal as startingmaterials, phenolic resin (PR) as a binder, and TOS as a titanium source to prepare $TiO_2$ combining spherical shaped activated carbon photocatalysts. The textural properties of the activated carbon photocatalysts (SACP) were characterized by specific surface area (BET), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), iodine adsorption, strength intensity, and pressure drop. The photocatalytic activities of the SACPs were characterized by degradation of the organic dyes Methylene Blue (MB), Methylene Orange (MO), and Rhodamine B (Rh. B) and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) experiment. The surface properties are shown by SEM. The XRD patterns of the composites showed that the SACP composite contained a typical single, clear anatase phase. The EDX spectro for the elemental indentification showed the presence of C and O with Ti peaks. According to the results, the spherical activated carbon photocatalysts sample of AOP prepared with activated carbon formed the best spherical shape, a high BET surface area, iodine adsorption capability and strength value, and the lowest pressure drop, and the photocatalytic activity was better than samples prepared with charcoal. We compared the degradation effects among three kinds of dyes. MB solution degraded with the SACP is better than any other dye solutions.

In this study, several kinds of active carbons with high specific surface area and micro pore structure were prepared from the coconut shell charcoal using chemical activation method. The physical property of prepared active carbon was investigated by experimental variables such as activating chemical agents to char coal ratio, flow rate of inert gas and temperature. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH and NaOH was successfully able to make active carbons with high surface area of $1900{\sim}2500m^2/g$ and mean pore size of 1.85~2.32 nm. The coin cell using water-based binder in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1 vol%) showed better capacity than that of oil-based binder. Also, it was found that the coin cell of water-based binder shows an improved cycling performance and coulombic efficiency.
