Modern super-tall buildings are more sensitive to strong winds. The evaluation of wind loads for the design of these buildings is of primary importance. A direct monitoring of wind forces acting on super-tall structures is quite difficult to be realized. Indirect measurements interpreted by inverse techniques are therefore favourable since dynamic response measurements are easier to be carried out. To this end, a Kalman filtering based inverse approach is developed in this study so as to estimate the wind loads on super-tall buildings based on limited structural responses. The optimum solution of Kalman filter gain by solving the Riccati equation is used to update the identification accuracy of external loads. The feasibility of the developed estimation method is investigated through the wind tunnel test of a typical super-tall building by using a Synchronous Multi-Pressure Scanning System. The effects of crucial factors such as the type of wind-induced response, the covariance matrix of noise, errors of structural modal parameters and levels of noise involved in the measurements on the wind load estimations are examined through detailed parametric study. The effects of the number of vibration modes on the identification quality are studied and discussed in detail. The made observations indicate that the proposed inverse approach is an effective tool for predicting the wind loads on super-tall buildings.
The frictionless contact problem for a layered composite which consists of two elastic layers having different elastic constants and heights resting on two simple supports is considered. The external load is applied to the layered composite through a rigid stamp. For values of the resultant compressive force P acting on the stamp vertically which are less than a critical value $P_{cr}$ and for small flexibility of the layered composite, the continuous contact along the layer - the layer and the stamp - the layered composite is maintained. However, if the flexibility of the layered composite increases and if tensile tractions are not allowed on the interface, for P > $P_{cr}$, a separation may be occurred between the stamp and the layered composite or two elastic layers interface along a certain finite region. The problem is formulated and solved for both cases by using Theory of Elasticity and Integral Transform Technique. Numerical results for $P_{cr}$, separation initiation distance, contact stresses, distances determining the separation area, and the vertical displacement in the separation zone between two elastic layers are given.
Traditionally, a quasi steady response concerning the aerodynamic force and moment coefficients acting on a flat plate while 'flying' through the air has been assumed. Such an assumption has enabled the flight paths of windborne debris to be predicted and an indication of its potential damage to be inferred. In order to investigate this assumption in detail, a series of physical and numerical simulations relating to flat plates subject to autorotation has been undertaken. The physical experiments have been carried out using a novel pressure acquisition technique which provides a description of the pressure distribution on a square plate which was allowed to auto-rotate at different speeds by modifying the velocity of the incoming flow. The current work has for the first time, enabled characteristic pressure signals on the surface of an auto-rotating flat plate to be attributed to vortex shedding.
When designing protective clothing, there are something to be considered such as physiological feature of human body, acting range not to restrict physical activity, and effectiveness of material. Because the primary objective of protective clothing is to protect human body from danger and it is designed through complex designing process not likely general clothing design. However, current evaluation techniques-such as the ISO, the ASTM and the CEN, and KS-provide only the standard to evaluate the primary feature of material (testing, performance requirements, material specification, selection and application, test and care, and so on). There are no standard to evaluate influence for the human body while protective clothing put on. Especially, in Korea, there is KS to evaluate protective clothing, but it is partially translated version from ISO because of lack of core technology about this field. However, developed countries recognize it is new competitive means in the time of Global Standards and they are competing to make their own standard to global standard for the protective clothing. Therefore, it can be great opportunity for Korean clothing and textile industry to revitalize if focusing on research and development for protective clothing design based on physical activity of human body, fit evaluation technique and sizing which is currently no global standard for it and developing our standard to global standard.
The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167D, 0.05D and 0.067D with pitches of PPD=1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of $Re_D=7.8{\times}10^3{\sim}1.2{\times}10^5$. At $Re_D=1.2{\times}10^5$, the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.
We intended to show some basic requirements for spectrum analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) by visualizing the differences of the results according to different values of some parameters for analysis. Spectrum analysis is the most popular technique applied for the quantitative analysis of the electroen- cephalographic signals. Each step from signal acquisition through spectrum analysis to presentation of parameters was examined with providing some different values of parameters. The steps are:(1) signal acquisition; (2) spectrum analysis; (3) parameter extractions; and (4) presentation of results. In the step of signal acquisition, filtering and amplification of signal should be considered and sampling rate for analog-to-digital conversion is two-time faster than highest frequency component of signal. For the spectrum analysis, the length of signal or epoch size transformed to a function on frequency domain by courier transform is important. Win dowing method applied for the pre-processing before the analysis should be considered for reducing leakage problem. In the step of parameter extraction, data reduction has to be considered so that statistical comparison can be used in appropriate number of parameters. Generally, the log of power of all bands is derived from the spectrum. For good visualization and quantitative evaluation of time course of the parameters are presented in chronospectrogram.

In the design of structure the forces acting on the structure are important parameter for noise and vibration control. However, in the complex structure, the forces at the injection point on the structure cannot be measured directly. Thus it is necessary to find out indirect force evaluation method. In this paper forces have been measured with in-situ vibration responses and system information. Three existing techniques of indirect force measurement, viz. direct inverse, principal component analysis and regularization have been compared. It has been shown that multi-vibration responses are essential for the precise estimation of the forces. To satisfy those conditions, Rotary compressor is adopted as test sample, because it is very difficult to measure the injection forces from internal excitation to shell. It has also been obtained that relatively higher force is transmitted though three welding paths to the compressor shell. It shows a good agreement between direct and indirect force evaluation with curvature shell and plate and is investigated the possibility of force evaluation of rotary compressor as a complex structure.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as a scaffold for cell culture. Because both the stress and strain acting on the substrate and the hemodynamic environment are important for studying mechano-transduction of cellular function, the traction force of the surface of a substrate has been measured using fluorescence images of particle distribution. In this study, deformation of the cross-sectional plane of a PDMS block was measured by correlating particle image distributions to validate the particle image strain measurement technique. Deformation was induced by a cone indentor and a shearing parallel plate. Measured deformations from particle image distributions were in agreement with the results of a computational structure analysis using the finite-element method. This study demonstrates that the particle image correlation method facilitates measurement of deformation of a polymer scaffold in the cross-sectional plane.

In this paper, residual sway control of objects that are moved underwater is investigated. The fuel transfer system in a nuclear power plant transfers the nuclear fuel rods underwater. The research on the dynamics of the loads transferred in different mediums (water and air) and their control methods have not been fully developed yet. The attenuation characteristics of the fuel transfer system have been studied to minimize its residual vibration by considering the effects of hydrodynamic forces acting on the fuel rod. First, a mathematical model is derived for the underwater fuel transfer system, and then experiments have been conducted to study the dynamic behavior of the rod while it travels underwater. Lastly, the residual vibration at the end point is minimized using the input shaping technique.

The foundations are classified into shallow and deep, which have important differences: in terms of geometry, the behavior of the soil, its structural functionality, and its constructive systems. The shallow foundations may be of various types according to their function; isolated footings, combined footings, strip footings, and slabs foundation. The isolated footings are of the type rectangular, square and circular. The combined footing may be rectangular, trapezoidal or T-shaped in plan. This paper presents a new model for T-shaped combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal dimensioning) to support an axial load and moment in two directions to each column. The new model considers the soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. The classical model uses the technique of test and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and subsequently, the equation of the biaxial bending is used to obtain the stresses acting on each vertex of the T-shaped combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: The minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can withstand the soil. To illustrate the validity of the new model, numerical examples are presented to obtain the minimum area of the contact surface on the soil for T-shaped combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column.
