Addition of 30% propylene glycol was required to maintain sink condition in the evaluation of percutaneous absorption of estradiol and norethindrone acetate. The permeability of estradiol was higher in silicone and SIS adhesives. However, estradiol was crystallized in silicone, SIS, and SBS adhesive matrix. The permeability ratio of estradiol or norethindrone acetate from acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives varied widely depending on the functional group of the acrylic adhesives. PEO grafting to acrylic adhesive seemed to change physicochemical property of acrylic adhesive and increased the permeability of estradiol and norethindrone acetate significantly. On the contrary, highly cross-linked enhancer compatible acrylic adhesive decreased the permeability of both estradiol and norethindrone acetate. $Span^{\circledR}$ 20 provided the highest enhancing effect on the permeability of both estradiol and norethindrone acetate followed by oleic acid and $Crovol^{\circledR}$ EP40. The permeability of the drugs from the developed system was comparable to that from commercial $Combitran^{\circledR}$, although significantly lower amount of estradiol and norethindrone acetate were loaded in the developed system.
Polyester of linear homopolymer poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) was chemically modified through the formation of branched copolymer to improve the undesirable properties of fiber. Photo-induced graft copolymerization of the acrylic monomers acrylic acid (AA) and methyl acrylate (MA) in the liquid and vapor phase, respectively, onto N,N-dimetylformamide (DMF)-pretreated PET fibers was carried out. The effect of various synthesis conditions and DMF pretreatment of the PET on the graft yield was investigated. Grafting mechanism was analysed. The grafting was promoted by increasing DMF pretreatment temperature and amount of DMF retention in the fiber. The increasing biacetyl and monomer flow time, and irradiation time enhanced the grafting up to a certain amount and thereafter it decreased.

In order to improve resistant properties of water-borne acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) for automobiles, this study was carried out. Removable PSAs for automobiles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of monomers, n-butyl acrylate(BA), n-butyl methacrylate(BMA), acrylonitrile(AN), acrylic acid(AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA), and AA and 2-HEMA could act as functional monomers for crosslink. Emulsion polymerization was carried out in a semi-batch type reactor. Water resistance, heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance were examined. As a result, water resistance increased with the amount of BMA, however, the effect of BMA content on the water resistance was insignificant at a range of over 14 wt%. The water resistance also increased with the amount of functional monomers, AA and 2-HEMA. The prepared PSAs satisfied all the standard for automobiles except heat resistance. However, the heat resistance comes nearly up to the standard. Also, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance of the prepared PSAs satisfied with the standard.
Plasma-polymerized acrylic acid films were deposited on Si wafer and KBr pellet by remote plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Effects of plasma power, reaction pressure, indirect plasma method on the growth rate, chemical structure, and chemical bonding state of the films were investigated. Chemical structure and chemical state of the films were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and curve fitting technique. Growth rate of the film increased to a saturation value with plasma power of 100 W, but showed the maximum with reaction pressure at 300 mtorr. Whenever W/FM factor (applied energy per gas molecule) increased by increasing plasma power or lowering pressure, the fragmentation of acrylic acid molecules was promoted. From the XPS curve fitting analyses, we found that the intensity of carboxyl COO bonding peak decreased with W/FM factor, and the tendency of intensity change of carboxylic COO peak was contrary to those of ether C-O and carbonyl C=O peaks.
The superparamagnetic nanoparticles were prepared by coprecipitation of $FeCl_3$ and $Na_2SO_3$ with $NH_4OH$ and the surface charge on hydroxyl group by chemisorption was changed depending on pH. We studied correlation between surface charge of magnetite and pH. Using this correlation the properties of poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) hydrogel embedded with magnetite was studied. The magnetite was characterized by XRD, AFM. and FTIR. The zeta-potential of magnetite was influenced by pH: great positive charge was shown high under the pH 4 and isoelectric point was found at pH 7. The hydrogen bond formed by combining oi PAAc hydrogel and magnetic colloid under pH 4 caused tensile strength to increase, while swelling and elongation at break to decrease. The result confirmed that the magnetic moment was increased proportionally to the content of magnetite.
Pentaerytritol triacrylate (PETA) was synthesized by a condensation reaction between pentaerytritol and acrylic acid. The highest yield of PETA was obtained when heptane was used as a solvent under the 1:4 mole ratio of pentaerytritol and acrylic acid. The 6-functional urethane acrylates(UA) were also synthesized by a condensation reaction between PETA and diisocyanate. Cured films were prepared from the mixtures of UA oligomer, reactive diluents and UV initiator to investigate their physical properties. The thermal stability of the aliphatic urethane acrylate was better than that of the aromatic urethane acrylate. The UA-2 showed good hardness and scratch resistance properties while the UA-l with a high degree of curing density exhibited a better chemical resistance. All the UA oligomers showed fairly good adhesion strengths but the other physical properties of UA-3 were poor due to its low curing density.
In order to use as supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane, poly(acrylic acid)-grafted porous polytetrafluoroethylenes (PTFEs) were prepared via introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft chains by a radiation grafting method. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft polymer chains into the porous PTFEs. Contact angles were examined to observe the hydrophilicity of the surface of the prepared substrates. The result indicates that the hyrophilicity of the surface in the prepared substrates increases with an increase in the number of hydrophilic polymer chains. FE-SEM, gurley number, and tensile strength were also utilized to characterize the prepared substrates.

This paper describes the reactive compatibilization of blends of a wholly aromatic thermotropic copolyester liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) with random copolymers of ethylene and acrylic acid (EAA) and their salts. Blends were prepared by melt mixing in an intensive batch mixer, and the formation of a graft copolymer due to acidolysis between the TLCP and the acrylic acid group of the ionomer was evaluated. Chemical reaction was assessed by torque measurement during melt mixing and by thermal analysis and morphological observation. The Na-salt of the EAA ionomers was especially effective at promoting a grafting reaction. The extent of reaction depended not only on the cation, but also composition of the ionomer and reaction time. The product of the grafting reaction between the TLCP and a sodium-neutralized ionomer proved to be an effective compatibilizer for TLCP and EAA ionomers.

Benzotriazole which is used as a corrosion inhibitor for the zinc coated steel was intercalated into Na-MMT. X-ray diffraction experiments on intercalant/silicate composite samples demonstrated that the intercalation of intercalant leads to an increase in the spacing between silicate layers. Water soluble poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEA) nanocomposites, to use as a coating agent, were prepared with these modified MMT. We found that mono-layered silicates were dispersed in PEA matrix and those resultants were exfoliated nanocomposites. From the result of salt spray test, we found that this coating agent prepared with water soluble poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEA) nanocomposite provided good corrosion protection. These results were caused by decreasing the rate of oxygen permeation from silicate layers dispersed homogeneously in PEA matrix and the effect of corrosion inhibitor from benzotriazole.
