  • This paper presents phenomena of vibration and noise due to acoustic resonance in tube bank of a power plant. Acoustic resonance is may arise when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the acoustic natural frequency. At the resonance, the value of vibration in this system was 595 ${\mu}m$, p-p and the sound pressure level was maximum 103 dBA. And the resonance frequency was found to be 35 Hz. When the difference of vortex shedding frequency and acoustic natural frequency is within ${\pm}20%$, acoustic resonance is possible. In this system, the difference of these frequencies was 1.8%. We can evaluate the possibility of acoustic resonance by using damping parameter. We did eliminate acoustic resonance by installing baffle in tube bank. After installing baffle, the level of vibration and noise was reduced dramatically.

  • This paper proposes a method for the acoustic imaging wherein the traditional requirement of the relative movement between the transmitter and target is overcome. This is facilitated through the beamforming acoustic array in the transmitter, in which the target is illuminated by the array at various azimuth and elevation angles without the physical movement of the acoustic array. The concept of beam steering of the acoustic array facilitates the formation of the beam at desired angular positions of azimuth and elevation angles. This paper substantiates that the combination of illumination of the target from different azimuth and elevation angles with respect to the transmitter (through the beam steering of beam forming acoustic array) and the beam steering at multiple frequencies (through SF) results in enhanced reconstruction of images of the target in the underwater scenario. This paper also demonstrates the possibility of reconstruction of the image of a target in underwater without invoking the traditional algorithms of Digital Image Processing (DIP). This paper comprehensively and succinctly presents all the empirical formulae required for modelling the acoustic medium and the target to facilitate the reader with a comprehensive summary document incorporating the various parameters of multi-disciplinary nature.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between parameters affecting internal quality of watermelon and its acoustic characteristics. The measuring and analyzing system was established to study the acoustic characteristics of watermelon. Algorithms for analyzing sound signals were developed. Sound signals which was detected with the microphone were filtered, and their spectrum was computed by means of the Fast Fourier Transform. As watermelon changed from the unripe stage to ripe, acoustic waves in time domain became complicated, and several components appeared in frequency domain. The correlationship was investigated between some parameters affecting internal quality of the watermelon and several peak frequencies. Results indicated that weight, density and sugar content had high correlations with several frequencies(the first peak frequency, the second peak frequency, and the third peak frequency). And the sugar content and the volume of the watermelon were highly correlated with the third peak frequency.

  • This study investigated and compared the acoustic characteristics of the Korean stop sound [k'] in three different phonological environments: the tensified lenis stop [k'] as observed in /prek+kaci/, the fortis stop /k'/ as in /pre+k'aci/, and the fortis stop /k'/ following an obstruent as in /prek+k'aci/. The specific research question was whether or not the tensified lenis stop shares all the acoustic features with the other two kinds of fortis stops. The acoustic measures adopted in this study were H1*-H2*, VOT, length of stop closure, and $F_0$. The major findings were that the three stops showed no significant difference in all the acoustic measures except the length of stop closure. The fortis stop /k'/ following an obstruent showed significantly longer duration of stop closure than the other two stops, both of which showed no significant difference. Based on these phonetic results, this study argued that, for the proper phonological description of post-obstruent tensification, the phonological feature [slack vocal folds] of a lenis stop should be changed into [stiff vocal folds, constricted glottis] that the fortis stops should have.

  • Nonlinear acoustic damping of a half-wave acoustic resonator in a rocket combustor is investigated numerically adopting a nonlinear acoustic analysis. First, in a baseline chamber without any resonators, acoustic behavior is investigated over the wide range of acoustic amplitude from 80 dB to 150 dB. Damping factor increases nonlinearly with acoustic amplitude and nonlinearity becomes appreciable at acoustic amplitude above 125 dB. Next, damping effect of a half-wave resonator is investigated. It is found that nonlinear acoustic excitation does not affect optimum tuning condition of the resonator, which is derived from linear acoustics. A half-wave resonator is effective even for acoustic damping of high-amplitude pressure oscillation, but its function of acoustic damper is relatively weakened compared with the case of linear acoustic excitation.

  • In recent days, on account of the cultural development and the improvement of citizen's consciousness level, it is the real situation that the construction of small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall where various cultural events could be performed, is on increasing. However, since the most of Multi-Purpose Hall had been designed and built up without any consideration on Acoustic Factor, many problems are on occurring thereat. Since those small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall have been mostly used with the finishing material which contains a high degree of Acoustic Absorption indiscreetly, both diffusion and reflection of sound are not establishing properly, and because thereverberation of sound is very low, in case of musical performance by musical instrument, its sound hears too arid and stiff, there occurs some acoustic defect such as it becomes difficult for music appreciation with sufficient timbre, so that the capability improvement on the matter is urgently requiring situation. Therefore, this Study has tried to seize the satisfaction level about the small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall after betterment of the acoustic performance by appraise the acoustic condition of the Hall, using Auralization Technique that can experience Virtual Acoustic Field regarding to the small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall as its object. It is deemed that such research result could be practically used as the useful material which enables to bring a reduction effect of construction cost as well asenhancement of the acoustic performance through its presupposition?control on the acoustic problem when construction or renovation of other similar small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall in the future.

  • In case of indoor gymnastics training floor, in view of its characteristics, since it is simultaneously required the related smooth communication between the coach and the player, also the acoustic performance regarding to the Clearness of Music, besides the sport activity, the consideration about the acoustic character has entered the stage as an indispensable element. On such viewpoint, on the object of the recently built dome-typed gymnastics training floor, after making the optimized acoustic design with the remodeling through acoustic simulation, by means of measurement and valuation on human's psychological(sensual) degree utilizing Auralization that enables to experience the virtual sound field at the stage of design, this thesis has attempted to survey of the acoustic satisfaction degree and its reaction about the gymnastics training floor. As the result of investigation about the research on the space of object, it could be known that the valuation regarding to the acoustic performance of 'After-Improvement' was distinctly more refined than that of 'Before-Improvement'. It is now considering that such result of the study can be utilized as the useful data which enables to improve the retrenchment effect of the construction cost as well as the acoustic capability, by means of the prediction control on the acoustic problem from the stage of design, for the occasion when the similar indoor sport gymnasium is planning to build for the near future.

  • The present paper investigated the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting process of a phase-change material (PCM). The melting process in the square cavity with a heated vertical wall has been studied in terms of acoustic streaming. In the present study, applying with ultrasonic vibrations to the liquid were found to induce acoustic streaming which was clearly observed using by a particle image velocimetry (PIV) and a thermal infrared camera. The experimental results revealed that acoustic streaming could accelerate the melting process as much as 2.5 times, compared to the rate of natural melting (i. e., the melting without acoustic streaming). In addition, temperature and Nusselt numbers over time provided conclusive evidence of the important role of the acoustic streaming on the melting phenomena of the PCM.

  • One method to analyse acoustic modes is proposed to predict the characteristics of acoustic instability in liquid rocket engine. It is based on the similarity between transverse acoustic modes and adopts two-dimensional axisymmetric geometry. Using this method, the first tangential mode in the prototype combustor can be analysed through the analysis of the first radial mode in the model combustor with doubled chamber diameter. Sample numerical calculation is demonstrated applying this method to sample rocket engine and thereby acoustic instabilities of the engine are investigated. The present results show a good agreement with the previous findings. The numerical analysis based on the proposed method is cost-effective and serves as the first approximation to the true solution.
