The modes of oscillation and radiated acoustic fields of compressible flows over open cavities are investigated computationally. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved for two-dimensional cavities with laminar boundary layers upstream. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for the evaluation of spatial derivatives and the time integration. Physically correct numerical boundary conditions are implemented to produce time-accurate solutions in the whole computation domain. The computational domain is large enough to directly resolve a portion of the radiated acoutic field. The results show a transition from a shear layer mode, for shorter cavities and lower Mach numbers, to a wake mode for longer cavities and higher Mach numbers. The shear layer mode is well characterized by Rossiter modes and these oscillations lead to intense upstream acoustic radiation dominated by a single frequency. The wake mode is characterized instead by a large-scale vortex shedding. Acoustic radiation is more intense, with multiple frequencies present.
Research in the Center for Pediatric Auditory and Speech Sciences (CPASS) is attempting to characterize or phenotype children with speech delays based on acoustic-phonetic evidence and relate those phenotypes to chromosome loci believed to be related to language and speech. To achieve this goal we have adopted a highly interdisciplinary approach that merges fields as diverse as automatic speech recognition, human genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology, and speech-language pathology. In this presentation I will trace the background of this project, and the rationale for our approach. Analyses based on a large amount of speech recorded from 18 children with speech delays will be presented to illustrate the approach we will be taking to characterize the acoustic phonetic properties of disordered speech in young children. The ultimate goal of our work is to develop non-invasive and objective measures of speech development that can be used to better identify which children with apparent speech delays are most in need of, or would receive the most benefit from the delivery of therapeutic services.
The flow and acoustic fields due to a vortex ring interaction with a rigid sphere are simulated numerically. The flow field is regarded as three-dimensional inviscid and incompressible. The vorticity is assumed to be concentrated inside the finite core of vortex filament. The vortex filament curve, described by parabolic blending curve function, is used to effectively solve the modified Biot-Savart equation. The interaction between a vortex ring and a rigid sphere using the parabolic blending curve is calculated. The trajectory of the vortex ring is obtained with several different initial positions between the ring and the sphere. The force variations acting on the sphere are calculated by using the boundary integral method. Finally, we can also obtain the acoustic signals at the far field observation positions from the force variations acting on the rigid surface. We can find that the dipole axis of the directivity patterns are rotated during the interacting phenomena.
An acoustic finite element model of a bridge is developed to evaluate the noise generated by the traffic-induced vibration of the bridge. The dynamic response of a multi-girder bridge, modeled by a 3-dimensional frame element model, is analyzed with a 3-axle 8 DOFs truck model and a 5-axle 13 DOFs semi-trailer. The flat plate element is used to analyze the acoustic pressure due to the fluid-structure interactions between the vibrating surface and contiguous acoustic fluid medium. The radiation fields of noise with a specified distribution of vibrating velocity and pressure on the structural surface are also computed using the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral. Although the noise produced by the bridge vibration is not serious in itself, which is below the audible frequency range, it should be considered as an interaction problem between vehicle noise and bridge vibration noise in order to evaluate the traffic noise around the bridge.
The MPEG/audio standard results from three years of co-work by an international committe of high-fidelity audio compression experts in the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG/audio). The MPEG standard is rigid only where necessary to ensure interoperability. In this paper, a new approach of training and classification of acoustic signal is addressed. This is some what a fields of application aspects rather than technonical problems such as MPEG/codec, MIDI. In preprocessing, acoustic signal is transformmed using DWT so as to extract a feature parameters of sound such as loudness, pitch, bandwidth and harmonicity. these accoustic parameters are exploited to the input vector of neural perceptron. Experimental results showed that proposed approach can be used for tunning the dissonance chord.
Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectric actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction.
The main objective of this paper is to compute the far-field acoustic radiation (sound radiation) of functionally graded plates (FGM) loaded by sinusoidally varying point load subjected to the arbitrary boundary condition is carried out. The governing differential equations for thin functionally graded plates (FGM) are derived using classical plate theory (CPT) and Rayleigh integral using the elemental radiator approach. Four cases, segregated on power-law index k=0,1,5,10, are studied. A novel approach is illustrated to compute sound fields of vibrating FGM plates using the physical neutral surface with an elemental radiator approach. The material properties of the FGM plate for all cases are calculated considering the power law indexes. An in-house MATLAB code is written to compute the natural frequencies, normal surface velocities, and sound radiation fields are analytically calculated using semi-analytical formulation. Ansys is used to validate the computed sound power level. The parametric effects of the power law index, modulus ratios, different constituent of FGM plates, boundary conditions, damping loss factor on the sound power level, and radiation efficiency is illustrated. This work is the benchmark approach that clearly explains how to calculate acoustic fields using a solid layered FGM model in ANSYS ACT. It shows that it is possible to asymptotically stabilize the structure by controlling the intermittent layers' stiffness. It is found that sound fields radiated by the elemental radiators approach in MATLAB, ANSYS and literatures are in good agreement. The main novelty of this research is that the FGM plate is analyzed in the low-frequency range, where the stiffness-controlled region governs the whole analysis. It is concluded that a clamped mono-ceramic FGM plate radiates a lesser sound power level and higher radiation efficiency than a mono-metallic or metal-rich FGM plate due to higher stiffness. It is found that change in damping loss factor does not affect the same constituents of FGM plates but has significant effects on the different constituents of FGM plates.
