The effective components of Korean ginseng showing the lipid-peroxide depressing activity were isolated. From the ether-soluble acidic fraction of fresh ginseng three phenolic acids were obtained. Salicylic acid and vanilic acid exhibited the potent antioxidant activity, where p-hydroxycinnamic acid did not.

Cytochrome c (cyt c) binds to acidic membranes at low ionic strength. Replacement of Lys-72 or Lys-87 by Glu reduced the binding affinity of cyt c toward large unilamellar vesicles (LUV) in liquid crystalline phase. The differences were smaller for LUV in gel phase. A fraction of bound cyt c was non-electrostatically associated.(omitted)

Essential oil components from tobacco powder were investigated as flavouring agent. The essential oil was isolated from tobacco powder by a simple distillation /extraction method The extracted essential oil was fractionated into basic, acidic and neutral groups. And the neutral group of essential oil was separated by column chromatography into 10 fractions. Above groups and fractions were tested for tobacco aroma and smoke aroma. The neutral group except most nonpolar fraction displays good flavouring properties which make them highly suitable for improving the flavour and aroma of tobacco and tobacco smoke. The most nonpolar fraction from neutral group was carefully investigated using preparative column, thin layer and gas chromatography ailed by GC/MS coupling. The major subfraction was identified as hydrocarbons on the basis of the IR spectrum. The 58 hydrocarbon components were identified by their mass spectra and was chromatographic retention times.

The copolymmers of N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate(DAEM) and N-arylmethacrylamide (AMA) were prepared, and their photochemical properties as a negative photoresist were studied by the measurements of insoluble fraction, and by UV and IR absorption spectral changes. These copolymers are soluble in DMF, actone, methanol, of acidic buffer solutions. Solubility of these copolymer films in the vuffer solutions increased with the amount of DAEM units in the copolymer and decreased with the pH value. The insoluble fraction of the copolymer films in the buffer solution of pH 4 of in methanol increased with irradiation time and the amount of AMA units in the copolymer. UV and IR spectral changes indicated that not only photo-crosslinking but also the photo-Fries rearrangement took place upon irradiation with a 254nm UV light.

To development food preservative, antimicrobial activities of Schizandra chinensis (SC) against Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, L. monocytogenes Brie I and L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111 were investigated. The growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A, L. monocytogenes Brie I and L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111 was inhibited apparently in Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) containing 1% SC at 35$\circ$C and it was found that these had antibacterial effects against a broad spectrum of pathogenic bacteria such as S. aureus ATCC 29737, B. subtilis KCTC 1021, E. coli ATCC 11775. The growth of L. monocytogenes was also inhibited about 3 to 5 log$_{10}$ cycle by 0.1% of three fractions of the alcohol extract such as ether, ethyl acetate and butanol. Acidic, weakly acid and neutral fraction of ether fraction showed inhibitory properties against L. monocytogenes.

The preliminary antifertility test of Dictamnus albus(Rutaceae) showed that a methanol extract of root bark decreased fertility in rats when administered orally on days $1{\sim}10$ postcoitum. Hexane, chloroform, butanol and aqueous fractions from the methanol extract, were tested to produce the result that only the hexane fraction exhibited positive activity. The hexane fraction was subfractionated into acidic, alkaloidal and neutral subtractions and tested. Neutral subtraction showed positive activity. From the neutral subtraction, fraxinellone was isolated as an active principle. The timed-dosing experiments revealed that antifertility activity of fraxinellone appeared to be exerted after tubal exit of the ova to prevent implantations.

Previous studies show that the free (unbound) fraction of disopyramide in human serum is drug concentration dependent~ at corresponding serum disopyramide concentrations that are achieved clinically. $^1^{\sim}^3^)\;Moreover$, disopyramide free fraction values vary several fold at any given drug concentration in human serum and tend to decrease as serum cocentrations of alpha-I-acid glycoprotein(AAG) incrase.$^4^)$ A recent $study^5^)$ demonstrates that the free fraction of disopyramide inhuman serum increases almost 2-fold following the addition of $14.4{\mu}M/L$ mono-N-dealkyldisopyramide. These studies and others. $^6^),\;^7^)$ prompted the present investigation to characterize the protein binding of disopyramide in human serum and solutions of AAG in the presence of mono-N-dealkyldisopyramide (a major metabolite of, disopyramide) and to determine the utility of using commercially available alpha-I-acid glycoprotein for drug protein binding displacement studies. Because many basic and acidic compounds are known to bind to alpha-I-acid $glycoprotein^8^)$ the present study. was performed to determine whteher commercially available AAG would provide a convenient protein source for such binding studies.

For the purpose of evaluating protective components against alcohol-induced toxicity, the active components enhancing alcohol metabolism was pursued from water soluble fraction by ethanol precipitation and DEAE-cellulose chromatographic technique. As a result, various high molecular weight fractions from Aloe vera and Aloe arborescens, on a single oral administration in rats were found to cause a significant decrease in the blood ethanol concentration as well as enhancement of liver cytosolic ADH and ALDH activities and among which, a strong acidic high molecular weight fraction was demonstrated to exhibit the most potent enhancing activity on ethanol metabolism.

In the previous study we described the antitumor effect of GLB, a protein-polysaccharide fraction separated from the growing tips of Ganoderma lucidum, against sarcoma 18 0 solid tumor in ICR mice. In this study, we separated an acidic protein-polysaccharide fraction, GLB-A, and a basic protein-polyaccharide fraction, GLB-B, from GLB by differential precipitation, and elucidated their antitumor and immunomodulatory activities. When ip injected at the dose of 50mg/kg/day into the ICR mice, GLB-A and GLB-B inhibited the growth of ip implantated sarcoma 180 cells by 32.4% and 21.0%, respectively. Of these, GLB-A increased the % lymphoblast in the spleen of the tumor-bearing and the normal mice by 20.9% and 123.0%, and the CD4/CD8 ratio by 73.3% and 22.4%, respectively. GLB-A also increased the expression of CD25 (IL-2 receptor alpha ch0ain) in normal mice by 82.0%. These results strongly suggest that GLB-A is a promising candidate for antitumor immunomodulatory medicine.

Ginseng berry(GB)는 진세노사이드Re를 함유하고 있으며, 항염, 피부 주름 완화의 기능을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 Ginseng berry 아미노산 복합체의 TLC 분획 fraction 1, 2, 4를 확인하고 HPLC로 분석하였으며, fraction 1의 LC/MASS 분석을 통해 peptide (AP-1)를 동정하였다. AP-1에 의한 NO 생성 억제 효과를 조사하여 항염증 활성을 확인하였다. 또한 procollagen type I C-peptide (PIP) ELISA kit를 이용한 collagen 합성은 대조군 대비 50% 이상의 효과를 보였다. 이상의 결과로부터 진생베리 아미노산 복합체로부터 분리한 펩타이드는 항염과 주름개선 효능을 가진다고 사료되며, 향후 항염 및 항노화 화장품 원료로서의 이용 가능성을 보였다.
