Dental ceramics exhibit excellent esthetic property, compressive strength, chemical durability, biocompatibility and translucency. This study evaluated the shear bond strength of composite resin to the new heat-pressed ceramic material (IPS-Empress System) depending on the surface treatments and bonding agents. The surface treatments were etching with 4.0% hydrofluoric acid, application of silane, and the combination of the two methods. Composite resin was bonded to ceramic with four kinds of dentin bonding agents(All-Bond 2, Heliobond, Scotch bond Multi-purpose and Tenure bonding agents). The ceramic specimen bonded with composite resin was mounted in the testing jig, and the universal testing machine(Zwick 020, Germany) was used to measure the shear bond strength with the cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. The results obtained were as follows 1. The mean shear bond strength of the specimens of which the ceramic surface was treated with the combination of hydrofluoric acid and silane before bonding composite resin was significantly higher than those of the other surface treatment groups(p<0.05). 2. In the case of All-Bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-purpose bonding agent group, the surface treatment methods did not influenced significantly on the shear bond(p>0.05). 3. Of the four bonding agents tested, the shear bond strength of Heliobond was significantly lower than those of other bonding agents regardless of the surface treatment methods(p<0.05). 4. The highest shear bond strength($12.55{\pm}1.92$ MPa) was obtained with Scotchbond Multipurpose preceded by the ceramic surface treatment with the combination of 4% hydrofluoric acid and silane.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of blood-and saliva-contamination during dentin pretreatment procedure on tensile bond strength, and to investigate the effect of contaminant-removing treatments on the recovery of bond strength of dentin bonding agents. Dentin specimens prepared from freshly extracted bovine mandibular anterior teeth were divided into non-contaminated control and contaminated experimental groups. The specimens of the contaminated group were contaminated with saliva or blood after etching or priming procedure, followed by contaminant-removing treatments. All the specimens were bonded with All Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 dentin bonding agent and Bisfil$^{TM}$ composite resin or Scotchbond$^{TM}$ Multipurpose and Z100. After all the bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, tensile bond strengths were measured. The contaminated dentin and fractured dentin surfaces were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : Contaminated specimens showed lower bond strength than non-contaminated ones regardless of the kind of contaminant, contamination time and contaminant-removing treatments, except specimens which were acid-etched following saliva contamination after etching in All Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 groups (p<0.05). Blood contaminant resulted in much bond strength decrease than saliva ones (p<0.01), and contamination after priming resulted in much decrease in bond strength than after etching (p<0.01). Re-etching resulted in increase of bond strength in the specimens contaminated with saliva after etching but not in blood contaminated ones. Re-priming resulted in increase of bond strength in the specimens contaminated after priming regardless of the kind of contaminant.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of salivary contamination on shear bond strength of pit and fissure sealant using several bonding agents by means of applying saliva at different stages of treatment. 56 teeth were randomly divided into one of seven groups (8 per group): (Group A, B) acid etching; (Group C, D, E) Adper$^{TM}$ Single Bond after acid-etching; (Group F, G) Adper$^{TM}$ Prompt L-pop. Saliva was applied to teeth surface of B, D, E, and G groups for 10 seconds. Especially, group D was contaminated after acid-etching and group E was contaminated with saliva after adhesive application. After light curing, all of the specimens were thermocycled and the shear bond strength tests were performed. The results were as follows. 1. In generally performed pit and fissure sealant group, shear bonding strength significantly differently reduced when was contaminated by saliva (p<0.05). However the group that was applied with bonding agent during pit and fissure sealant procedure, there were no significant differences in the kind of bonding agents nor the stage of contamination. 2. In group that was not contaminated by saliva during pit and fissure sealant treatment, Adper$^{TM}$ Single Bond yielded the highest bonding strength but there were no significant differences. 3. The failure pattern on the debonded surfaces shows that most specimens from groups using bonding agents showed cohesive failures while most specimens from groups that didn't use bonding agents showed adhesive failures.

Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) achieves surface planrity through combined mechanical and chemical means. The role of slurry is very important in metal CMP. Slurry used in metal CMP normally consists of oxidizers, complexing agents, corrosion inhibitors and abrasives. This paper investigates the effects of citric acid as a complexing agent for Cu CMP with $H_2O_2$. In order to study chemical effects of citric acid, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was peformed on Cu sample after etching test. XPS results reveal that CuO, $Cu(OH)_2$ layer decrease but $CU/CU_2O$ layer increase on Cu sample surface. To investigate nanomechanical properties of Cu sample surface, nanoindentation was performed on Cu sample. Results of nanoindentation indicate wear resistance of Cu surface decrease. According to decrease of wear resistance on Cu surface removal rate increases from $285\;{\AA}/min\;to\;8645\;{\AA}/min$ in Cu CMP.

Low foaming acidic degreasing agent(LFADAs) were prepared by blending sorbitol, n-octanoic acid, MJU-100A, Tetronix T-701, Na-dioctyl sulfosuccinate, Demol C, and phosphoric acid. The physical properties of LFADAs tested with aluminum specimen showed the following results ; when 3wt% LFADA-6 was performed at $70^{\circ}C$, the degreasing rate was 95% which is comparitively good, and the percentage of etching was 0.275% which was found to be less than that of commercialized product. When 20wt% of LFADA-6 was added at $65^{\circ}C$, the percentage of derusting was 92% and the good defoaming effect proved by following low foaming power tests respectively : Ross and Miles, and Ross and Clark methods.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile bond strength between composite resin and the human enamel. Three composite resin systems, two chemical (Clearfil Posterior, and Clearfil Posterior-3) and one light cure (Photo Clearfil-A), used with and without an intermediate resin (clearfil bonding agent), were evaluated under different amounts of load (10g, 200g and 200g for a moment) for in vitro tensile bond strength to acid-eched human enamel. Clinically intact buccal or lingual surfaces of 144 freshly extracted human permanent molars, embedded in acrylic were flattened with No #600 carborundum discs. Samples were randomly assigned to the different materials and treatments using a table of random numbers. Eight samples were thus prepared for each group(Table 2) these surfaces were etched with an acid etchant (Kurarey Co. Japan) in a mode of etching for 30 seconds, washing for 15 seconds, and drying for 30-seconds. During the polymerization of composite resin on the acid-etched enamel surfaces with and without bonding agent 10-gram, 200 gram and temporary 200 gram of load were applied. The specimens were stored in 50% relation humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing. An universal Testing machine (Intesco model No. 2010, Tokyo, Japan) was used to apply tensile loads in the vertical directed (fig 5), and the force required for separation was recorded with a cross head speed of 0.25 mm/min and 20 kg in full scale. The results were as follow: 1. The tensile bond strength was much greater in applying a bonding agent than in not doing that. 2. The tensile bond strength of chemical cure composite resin was higher than that of light cure composite resin with applying on bonding agent on the acid-etched enamel. 3. In case of not applying a bonding agents on the acid-etching enamel, the highest tensile bond strength under 200 gram of load was measured in light cure composite resin. 4. The tensile bond strength under 200-gram of load has no relation with applying the bonding agent. 5. Under the load of 10-gram, There was significant difference in tensile bond strength as applying the bonding agent.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the penetration pattern of dentin adhesives according to the orientation of dentinal tubules with confocal laser scanning microscopy. Specimens having perpendicular. parallel and oblique surface to dentinal tubules were fabricated. The primer of dentin adhesives (ALL $BOND^{\circledR}{\;}2,{\;}CLEARFIL^{TM}$ SE BOND and PQ1) was mixed with fluorescent material. rhodamine B isothio-cyanate (Aldrich Cherm. CO., Milw., USA), It was applied to the specimens according to the instructions of manufactures. The specimens were covered with composite resin (Estelite, shade A2) and then cut to a thickness of 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ with low speed saw (Isomet^{TM}, Buehler. USA). The adhesive pattern of dentin adhesives were observed by fluorescence image using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. For the groups with tubules perpendicular to bonded surface. funnel shape of resin tag was observed in all specimen. However. resin tags were more prominent in phosphoric acid etching system (ALL $BOND^{\circledR}$ 2 and PQ1) than self etching system ($CLEARFIL^{TM}$ SE BOND). 2. For the groups with tubules parallel to bonded surface. rhodamine-labeled primer penetrated into peritubular dentin parallel to the orientation of dentinal tubules. But rhodamine-labeled primer of PQ1 diffused more radially into surrounding intertubular dentin than other dentin adhesive systems. 3. For the groups with tubules oblique to bonded surface. resin tags appeared irregular and discontinuous. But they penetrated deeper into dentinal tubules than other groups.
This study evaluated the shear bond properties of IPS Empress glass ceramic to enamel and dentin surfaces with three ceramic surface treatments, and three resin cements. The influence of thermocycling was also investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of resin cements, ceramic surface treatments, and thermocycling on shear bond properties. Ninety freshly extracted, noncarious human molars were selected for this study. The surface treatments of ceramic were etching <5.0% hydrofluoric acid, application of silane coupling agents(Tokuso Ceramic Primer, Clearfil porcelain bond, Monobond-S), and the combination of the two methods. Empress cylinders were bonded to enamel and dentin surfaces with three kinds of resin cements(Bistite resin cement, Panavia 21, Variolink). The specimens were aged in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours. Half of the specimens were then thermocycled 500times between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ with a dwell time of 15 seconds. Each specimen was debonded in shear mode and measured shear bond properties by using the universal testing machine(Zwick 020, Germany). The data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+(one-way ANOVA, Scheffe' s test and t-test). The results were as follows : 1. Without thermocyling, there was significant difference of shear bond strength to enamel surface between Bistite Resin Cement and Panavia 21 in case of etched and silane-treatment(p<0.05). 2. Without thermocyling, the shear bond strength of a group treated with silane and etching was significantly higher than that of a group treated with silane or etching with the application of Panavia 21 and Variolink(p<0.05). 3. A group treated with etching with the application of Variolink only showed a decrease of shear bond strength after thermocycling(p<0.05).

Cytotoxic substances in dental calculus and root cementum of periodontally diseased teeth inhibit new attachment and regeneration. The purpose of scaling and root planing is to remove pathologic structures harboring these cytotoxic substances in order to create a biologically acceptable root surface. However, these procedures inevitably leave a non-biocompatible smear layer. Conventionally, the smear layer has been removed with low pH etching agents such as citric acid, phosphoric acid and tetracycline hydrochloride(TC). Lately, a supersaturated neutral pH etching solution of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA) has been found to be as effective as low pH etchants with respect to smear removal and to be superior in exposing root surfaceassociated collagen. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of root surface treatment using EDTA on the initial attachment of human gingival fibroblasts. 27 human teeth, extracted due to severe periodontitis, were cut into dentin slices after root planing. The specimens were divided into TC group(treated with $50㎎/m{\ell}$ tetracycline-HCl, pH 1.52), EDTA group(treated with 17% EDTA, pH 7.4), and non-treated control group. After sterilization, 5th subcultured human gingival fibroblasts were seeded in each culture well containing a prepared root slice and incubated for 15 min., 60 min., and 4 hours in 5% $CO_2$ incubator at $37^{\circ}C$. At each incubation time, the number of attached fibroblasts were counted on the microphotographs taken at a magnification of x100. The difference of the number of attached cells between groups was statistically analyzed by the ANOVA followed by Duncan test in SPSS/PC+programs. The results were as follows : 1. After incubation for 15 min, the attached cells were significantly more in EDTA group and TC group than non-treated control group(p<0.05), but there was no significance in the difference between EDTA group and TC group(p>0.1). 2. After incubation for 60 min and 4 hours, there was no significant difference in the number of attached cells between all groups(p>0.1). 3. In both EDTA group and TC group, there was no significant difference in the number of attached cells between different incubation(p>0.1). But in control group, the number of attached cells was significantly increased after incubation for 60 min, compared with incubation for 15 min(p<0.05). The above results suggest that root surface treatment using EDTA could enhance the initial attachment of gingival fibroblasts to root surface as effective as tetracycline-HCl.
