A Study on the Wood Identification of the Genus Acer in Korea -Especially on the Method by Thin Layer Chromatography of Lipid in Heartwood- (한국산(韓國産) 단풍나무속(屬) 목재식별(木材識別)에 관한 연구(硏究) -심재(心材) 지질(脂質)의 TLC에 의한 방법(方法)을 중심(中心)으로-)

  • This study was identified 6 species of the genus Acer in Korea by the method of thin layer chromatography on lipids in heart wood, and researched affinity among the species for the characteristics of color reaction. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Total-lipid in heart wood of the six species was 4.39%, mean free-lipid was 2.85% and mean bound-lipid was 1.54%. 2) All the six species; A. ginnala, A. mono, A. negundo, A. palmatum, A. saccharinum and A, triflorum were identified by the characteristics of color reaction. Judging from the color reactions, A. palmatum and A. triflorum seem to be closer than other species.

Structural Study on New Tannin, Polygagallin, from Acerginnala Max. (Acerginnala Max.에서 분리한 신 Tannin Polygagallin의 화학구조)

  • A new tannin, polygagallin, related to acertannin, is isolated from air-dried leaves of Acer ginnala Max. as prismatic crystals with 1/2 H$_{2}$O per mole, m.p.154-155.deg. and [.alpha.]$_{D}$$^{29}$ +43.79.deg. C. Polygagllin gives hexaacetate, m.p.164.5.deg. C, [.alpha.]$_{D}$$^{28}$ +42.deg. C, on treating with anhydroacetic acid and on treating with diazomethane, gives trimethyl ether, m.p.176.deg. C, [.alpha.]$_{D}$$^{22}$ +53.43, which yields triacetate, m.p.160.5.deg. C, [.alpha.]$_{D}$$^{22}$ + 132.5.deg. C, on acetylation and is not attacked by periodate. On hydrolysis, trimethoxypolygagallin yields one mole of polygalitol and that of trimethoxygallic acid. By the above results polygalallin has been established as 3-galloylpolygalito.ygalito.galallin has been established as 3-galloylpolygalito.

  • In our present investigations, distributions of Korean Aceraceae with single genus composed of 16 species, 14 varieties and 1 form were studied. Distributional atlases were made by UTM grid map and drawing methods have been previously described (Distribution Atlas of Plants of Korea I, II, and III). Acer okamotoanum and A. takesimense of Korean endemic species are commonly distributed in Dagelet Island but the latter also in such islands as Quelpart, Wan-Do and Heucksan-Do. A. palmatum var. nakaii is found in the middle and the northern parts of the subtropics, and A. micro-sieboldianum and A. nudricarpum restricted to the middle part of the country are endemic species of Korea. A. barbinerve and A. tegmentosum as species from the north are distributed to the top of Mt. Chiri in the south and are also found in Mt. Nangrim and Baiktu in the north. A. ginnala and A. mono are commonly distributed in Liaotung-Pantao and Shantung-Pantao, or Chinese peninsulas, and South Manchuria with Korean Peninsula. A. barbinerve, A. tegmentosum, A. triflorum, A. tschonoskii and A. ukurunduense in south Manchuria, north Manchuria and Korea are florae derived from Manchuria, and A. japonicum, A. momo var. ambiguum, A. mono var. savatieri, A. palmatum var. matsumurae and A. ukurunduense var. pilosum appear in Korea and Japan.

Study on the Screening of the $SO_2$ Resistant Species for Landscape in Air Polluted Area (대기오염지역(大氣汚染地域) 조경용(造景用) 수종(樹種)의 개발(開發)을 위(爲)한 $SO_2$에 대한 내연성(耐煙性) 비교(比較) 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to compare the resistance and sensitivity of trees with 6 native species exposing to 4 different levels of $SO_2$gas(0.4, 0.7, 1.5 and 3.0 ppm) respectively. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Visible injuries appeared as spots in the region of intervein on the leaves for all the species and the color of the spots changed from light green and/or brown to light brown, dark brown, and/or redish brown. 2. The sensitivity of the species to $SO_2$ was high in the descending order of Zizyphus jujuba, Cataegus pinnatifida, Viburnum sargentii, Weigela subsessilis, Euonymus japonica, and Acer ginnala. 3. The resistance of the species to $SO_2$ was high in the descending order of Acer ginnala, Eunymus japonica Viburnum sargentii, Weigela subsessilis, Zizyphus jujuba, and Crataegus pinnatifida. 4. When the trees were exposed to $SO_2$gas, the contents of chlorophyll a, b, and a+b were consostently lower than those of control, and water soluble sulfur contents in the leaves were higher than those of control. 5. There was no significant correlation between stomatal resistance and the sensitivity(or resistance) of the trees exposed to $SO_2$ gas. 6. In this study, it was concluded that Acer ginnala was more suitable species than the others for landscape in air polluted area because it showed high resistance, low sensitivity, and low stromal resistance to $SO_2$gas exposure.

Anti-Oxidant Property and Inhibition of Melanin Synthesis of Eight Plant Extracts (수종의 식물수출물의 항산화 및 Melanin 합성 억제효과)

  • Plants extracts are good resources to find functional compounds for human health. The following eight plants were collected and total phenolic contents were determined. Acer psedo-siebolianum showed the highest phenolic contents, 16.4 mg/g, whereas Cercidiphyllum japonica showed the lowest contents, 1.9 mg/g. The DPPH free radical scavenging capacities of the plant extracts showed high activity in following order : Acer ginnala ($21.3\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Cornus walteri ($23.9\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Distylum racemosum ($29.2\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Castanopsis cuspidata var. Thunbergii ($31.7\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Acer psedo-siebolianum ($34.6\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Thuijopsis dolabrata cv. Aurea ($53.1\;{\mu}g/mL$) > Cercidiphyllum Japonica ($115.2\;{\mu}g/mL$). Also the mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activities of total extracts were determined at different concentration. D. racemosum extract showed highest (49.1% at 1,000 mg) in inhibitory activity than other seven extracts. The ethanol fraction $IC_{50}$ value: $118.1\;{\mu}g/mL$) from D. racemosum showed more inhibitory activity than ethyl acetate fraction ($IC_{50}$ value: $203\;{\mu}g/mL$). The ethanol fraction on showed no significant cytotoxicity in B16/F1 cells line up to $60\;{\mu}g/mL$. Over $80\;{\mu}g/mL$ of ethanol fraction showed cytotoxicity in B16/F1 cells. The melanin contents of cells were significantly attenuated by ethanol fraction in a dose-dependent manner. The $IC_{50}$ value of ethanol fraction was $75.4\;{\mu}g/mL$.

  • In this study, 64 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation systems using glycation end products (AGEs) formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 30 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<50{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, four herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<5{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, Cornus controversa (branches and leaves), Acer ginnala (stems and leaves), Platycarya strobilacea (flowers) and Picrasma quassioides (stems), showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 17-27 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).

A Study on the Changing Pattern of the Petiole's Vascular Branch of Some Acer Species (단풍나무속(屬) 수종(數種)의 엽병(葉柄) 유관속지(維管束枝) 변화형(變化型)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was done to classify 15 species in the genus Acer through tracking of the changing shape of the vascular branch from the base part to the terminal part of petiole by the anatomical method. The basic vascular branches were 3 ea, except A. mandshuricum 3-4 ea. The vascular bundle was separated, moved and connected from the base part to the terminal part of petiol, the number of separated vascular branch was 11-32 ea., the number of connected vascular branch was 0-17 ea., and the ratio of the separated vascular branch to the connected was 0.00-8.00. The maximum number of vascular branch in No, 39 of cross section part was observed in 12 species; A. ginnala and A. buergerianum were No. 11, A. truncatum and A. platanoides were No. 13, A. saccharium was No. 26. The number of the connected vascular branches with the main vascular branch were 0-6, while the number of the separated vascular branch were 0-7. On the ratio of separation to connection of the base vascular branch; "A", "B" and "C", the symmetrical shapes on the basis of "B" were A>BC, AB>C shape. The classical groups by the development of main vascular branch formation were obtained 7 groups of "a" through "g" shape. Especially, A. negundo and A. saccharinum were shown to have central vascular branches with unique changing patterns.

  • The purposes of this research are to select the appropriate kinds of landscape woody plants for afforestation artificial ground and to find out the way of developing planting-tree area of artificial ground through test planting and case study. The summary of the research is as follows; As a result of observing the state of trees' growth, trees on artificial grounds grow as well as, or even better than those on natural grounds. The kinds of trees which represent better growth states on artificial soil of rooftop test area are Thuja occidentalis, Prunus armericana var. ausu, Acer palmatum, Viburnum sargentii for. sterile, Buxus microphylla var. koreana, etc. In addition, soils than on natural soils. As a result of investigating the tree's growth state according to soil beds of artificial soils, shrubs don't represent distinct differences. They show that shrubs can be planted on 30cm soil bed. The rest of trees no differences according to the variation of soil beds, and they are in normal condition or have slight damage. This means that though arbor planting area of artificial ground is made 45~60cm, it is possible for trees to grow on it. In consequence of analyzing the cases on areas of landscaping artificial grounds, as the appropriate kinds of trees for afforestation artificial ground, Diospyros kaki, Hibiscus syriacus, Syringa dilatata, Magnolia kobus, Acer ginnala and cornus alba are selected in Capital region, and Nandina domestica, Taxus cuspidata, Ilex crenata, Viburnum awabuki, Aucuba japonica and Euonymus japonica are selected in southern region. In addition, Juniperus chinensis, Zelkova serrata, Juniperus chinensis var. kaizuka, etc. are selected regardless of regional character. In accordance with the state of soil it shows great difference, namely, fertilization once or more a year and irrigation for drought is advantageous to tree's growth. This research represents that it is necessary that standards related to landscaping artificial grounds are subdivided. In addition to it, the plan for revising related to regulation is drawn up.

The Characteristics of the Vegetation of 'Amgok' Wetland, Gyeongju National Park, Korea (경주국립공원 내 암곡습지 유역권 식생분포 특성 연구)

  • In this study, we surveyed 6 times for the actual vegetation type and flora of Amgok wetland (Intermediate moor area, Alnus japonica community area) and it's watershed area in Tohamsan district, Gyeongju National Park from Apr. to Nov. in 2011. As a result of the actual vegetation type, most vegetation of watershed area was disturbed by human activity except wetland area. Even though the wetland is relatively broad compared with it's watershed, the wetland: watershed is around 1:10. The flora was surveyed 65 family, 184 species, 1 subspecies, 39 variety, 8 forma and totally 233 taxonomic group in the watershed. The wetland type was looked intermediate moor. Naturalized plants was surveyed 2taxonomic in the wetland area and total was17 taxonomic. This area has relatively broad wetland and soundly conserved. But several Salix koreensis and Acer ginnala are growing so needed the interest and monitoring.

Study on the Biophysical and Ecological Characteristics of the Streams - A Case of the Sand Streams in Kyonggi-Do District- (하천의 물리적 생태적 특성 연구 - 경기지방 모래하천의 사례 -)

  • To analyze physical and ecological characteristics of sand streams, Cheongmi, Yanghwa and Bokha streams on the similar environment were Lnvestigated and estimated. According to the estimation results of physical structures, ecological properties of the Cheogmi and Yanghwa streams were classified as 'fair to good', and the Bokha stream was classified as 'fair'; commonly, the representing streams were comparatively active on meandering and accumulation; on the other hand, erosion was less active. As a result of the study for flora on this 3 streams, $Phaiaris\;arundinacfa\rightarrowPhragmites\;japonica\rightarrowPhragmites\;communis\rightarrowSalix\;koreensis\rightarrowFraxinus\;rhynchophylla\rightarrowRobinia\;pseudo-acacia-Acer$ ginnala communities were developed in order of being closest to the water shore. In case of benthic macroinvertebrates, Ephemera striga ta Eaton and Cajopteryx atrata Selys, usually inhabited in the uncontaminated water, were investigated as common species. Besides, Limnodrilus gotoi Hatai and Family Chironomidae sp. 1 were the common dominant benthic macroinvertebrates.
