This paper proposes a traction control system (TCS) that uses a sliding mode wheel slip controller and a PID throttle valve controller. In addition, a yaw motion controller (YMC) is also developed to improve lateral stability using a PID rear wheel steering angle controller. The dynamics of a vehicle and characteristics of the controllers are validated using a proposed full-car model. A driver model is also designed to steer the vehicle during maneuvers on a split ${\mu}$ road and double lane change maneuver. The simulation results show that the proposed full-car model is sufficient to predict vehicle responses accurately. The developed TCS provides improved acceleration performances on uniform slippery roads and split ${\mu}$ roads. When the vehicle is cornering and accelerating with the brake or engine TCS, understeer occurs. An integrated TCS eliminates these problems. The YMC with the integrated TCS improved the lateral stability and controllability of the vehicle.

Dangerous driving is a major cause of traffic accidents in Korea. It becomes more serious for commercial vehicles due to higher fatality rates. The Safe Driving Management System (SDMS), developed in this research, is a comprehensive solution that monitors and stores driving conditions of vehicles, detects dangerous driving situations, and analyzes the results in real time. The Safe Driving Management System consists of a vehicle movement information controller, a dangerous driving detection algorithm and a vehicle movement data report and analysis program. The dangerous driving detection algorithm detects and classifies dangerous driving conditions into representative cases such as sudden acceleration, sudden braking, sudden lane change, and sudden turning. Both computer simulation and vehicle test have been conducted to develop and verify the algorithm. The Safe Driving Management System has been implemented on commercial buses to verify its reliability and objectivity. It is expected that the system can contribute to prevention of traffic accidents, systemization of safe driving management and reduction of commercial vehicle operation costs.
In this study, the driving performances of elderly who's age is over 65 were evaluated. The driving simulation was conducted using a compact driving simulation (CDS) and the simulation scenarios were developed from actual roads by replicating geometry of skewed intersection and traffic control devices located in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, Korea. 27 elderly drivers and 10 non-elderly drivers were recruited and participated on the virtual turning right and going straight driving experiment of CDS. Virtual driving data of driving time, speed, distance, acceleration and deceleration speeds, brake power, and steering wheel rotation angle were recorded and analyzed. Generally, elderly driver took more times to pass through the skewed intersection road and showed lower approaching speed as much as 40% and 25% in case of turning right and going straight scenarios respectively. The speed deviation at skewed intersection road between elderly and non-elderly driver is expected to cause frequent lane changes and overtaking.
In this study, road transportation tests were conducted with surrogate fuel assemblies under normal conditions of transport to evaluate the vibration and shock load characteristics of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The overall test data analysis was conducted based on the measured acceleration and strain data obtained from the speed bump, lane-change, deceleration, obstacle avoidance, and circular tests. Furthermore, representative shock response spectrums and power spectral densities of each test mode were acquired. Amplification or attenuation characteristics were investigated according to the load transfer path. The load attenuated significantly as it transferred from the trailer to the cask. By contrast, the load amplified as it transferred from the cask to the surrogate SNF assembly. The fuel loading location on the cask disk assembly did not exhibit a significant influence on the strain measured from the fuel rods. The principal strain was in the vertical direction, and relatively large strain values were obtained in spans with large spacing between spacer grids. The influence of the lateral location of fuel rods was also investigated. The fuel rods located at the side exhibited relatively large strain values than those located at the center. Based on the strain data obtained from the test results, a hypothetical road transportation scenario was established. A fatigue evaluation of the SNF rod was performed based on this scenario. The evaluation results indicate that no fatigue damage occurred on the fuel rods.

While driving a highway, A driver gets lots of information through geometrical structure, traffic situation, signs on the road. He gets most of the information by visual sense. Acceleration or deceleration and driving direction depend on sight distance. Therefore, it's essential to secure a driver's sight distance for a safe drive. However, design guides of geometrical structure and sight distance suggest respective standards of horizontal and vertical alignment. They do not indicate quantitative standard of combined alignment. Currently, element separated on a two-dimensional projected plane are available, but they do not guarantee safe and pleasant design. I will use the existent model analysing three-dimensional sight distance through mathematical calculation and sort a variety of geometrical structure element and type. In these researches, we will look at how much three-dimensional sight distance is overestimated or underestimated compared to two-dimensional. I will develop a program which predicts traffic velocity on the curvature of two-lane provincial road. stopped sight distance and three-dimensional sight distance will be compared at a predicted drive velocity. I will suggest the way to evaluate road consistency.
The number of traffic accidents at intersections has been increased over the past decade, and in 2014, accounted for 44% of the total traffic accidents. In addition, since most of road accident black spots include signalized intersections, the improvement of safety on signalized intersection is top priority for national road safety program in Korea. For the decision of most effective action plan for the safety of signalized intersection, this study conducted meta-analyses to assess the effects of various road safety facilities at signalized intersection on traffic accidents. We selected 19 articles regarding the prediction of traffic accidents at signalized intersection and calculated 34 individual effect sizes on 8 variables included in the articles. The results found that there was a statistically significant negative relationship between the occurrence of traffic accident and the presence of all of road safety facilities except an exclusive left turn bay. It shows that most of the road safety facilities could prevent traffic accidents, and intersection channelization has the most effective on the reduction of traffic accidents followed by left-turn acceleration lane, lightning, crosswalk, exclusive right-turn lane and median barrier.

Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS), so called "Hi-Pass" in Korea, has improved traffic flow at toll gate of highways. It is known that the improvement of traffic flow should reduce air pollutants and $CO_2$ from vehicles. In this study, real driving emission of a light duty truck with Portable Emission Measurement System(PEMS) has been measured to evaluate the emission reduction effect due to ETCS. The correlations between driving variables and emissions have been analyzed to verify its effect on traffic flow improvement and emission reduction at toll gate. We considered average vehicle speed, Relative Positive Acceleration (RPA), and the distance of queue as driving variables. Compared to passing Manual Toll Collection System (MTCS) lane without queue, ETCS was able to reduce 38.7% of $NO_x$, 21.6% of soot, and 27.7% of $CO_2$. The results showed that the higher the average vehicle speed, the lower RPA and no queue in ETCS contributed to the emission reductions. Linear equation models with RPA and queue have been established by the multiple linear regression method. The linear models resulted in the higher coefficient of determination than those with only average vehicle speed used for establishing vehicle emission factors.

World widely, the occurrences of earthquakes have been increased recently including to nations which earthquake often happen to like Japan. Taking into account that the earthquake acceleration at design was 0.154 g at the contigency level earthuake (CLE) with its geological condition, it resulted that this method must be the most efficient condition against the earthquake vibration to two lane cut-and cover tunnel. The correlations between the result of the shaking table test and its numerical analysis showed that the test data of the bending stress due to the earthquake vibration have been underestimated about 5 percents in case of the cut slope 1 : 0.6 and about 10 percent in case of the cut slope 1 : 1.2. However, on average, the results showed a similar tendency that the higher the height of the backfill of the EPS block was, the less the bending stress was.

Long-span cable-stayed bridges exhibit some features which are more critical than typical long span bridges such as geometric and aerodynamic nonlinearities, higher probability of the presence of multiple vehicles on the bridge, and more significant influence of wind loads acting on the ultra high pylon and super long cables. A three-dimensional nonlinear fully-coupled analytical model is developed in this study to improve the dynamic performance prediction of long cable-stayed bridges under combined traffic and wind loads. The modified spectral representation method is introduced to simulate the fluctuating wind field of all the components of the whole bridge simultaneously with high accuracy and efficiency. Then, the aerostatic and aerodynamic wind forces acting on the whole bridge including the bridge deck, pylon, cables and even piers are all derived. The cellular automation method is applied to simulate the stochastic traffic flow which can reflect the real traffic properties on the long span bridge such as lane changing, acceleration, or deceleration. The dynamic interaction between vehicles and the bridge depends on both the geometrical and mechanical relationships between the wheels of vehicles and the contact points on the bridge deck. Nonlinear properties such as geometric nonlinearity and aerodynamic nonlinearity are fully considered. The equations of motion of the coupled wind-traffic-bridge system are derived and solved with a nonlinear separate iteration method which can considerably improve the calculation efficiency. A long cable-stayed bridge, Sutong Bridge across the Yangze River in China, is selected as a numerical example to demonstrate the dynamic interaction of the coupled system. The influences of the whole bridge wind field as well as the geometric and aerodynamic nonlinearities on the responses of the wind-traffic-bridge system are discussed.

This study aims to suggest a methodology of localizing and calibrating parameters, such as acceleration, deceleration, and lane changing which are the basis of car following model in interrupted traffic flow to overcome the limitation of origin and destination based transportation simulation and to verify the application of activity-based model for use in Korean roadway condition in a large scale area or a city. Especially, we figured out that a proper cell size reflecting Korean traffic conditions is 1.0m rather than 7.5m which is default size and a methodology of tracking vehicle behavior characteristics through tracking vehicle ID is suggested on this study. In addition, vehicle running characteristics in real interrupted traffic flow is analyzed through subdividing vehicle types and updating vehicle type ratio. For verification of suggested model, some portion of Dalgubyul-ro in the Daegu city is tested, and the possibility of realization of interrupted traffic flow in simulation is studied.
