  • The purpose of this study is to describe the experience of visually impaired academic researchers' use of scholarly contents and to explore intrinsic nature of the experience. In-depth interview was conducted with a total number of twelve visually impaired academic researchers and the data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological research method. A total of 107 significant statements were extracted, divided into 44 themes and 12 theme clusters. The statements were then classified into four categories. The 'scholarly contents acquisition and use' category has to do with difficulties that these experience when negotiating with internet sites with poor web accessibility and full-text availability. The 'changes in perception and emotions' category deals with transitions in perception and mood experienced by visually impaired academic researchers' over time. The 'relationships with support personnel' category includes issues related with the difficulty of securing support person, support person's inadequate level of competence, and establishing/sustaining personal relationships. Finally, the 'improvement requirements' category includes issues that these researchers want resolved with regard to contents acquisition and use.

  • This research analyzed procedural problems presented in academic writing faced by international students. The result of this research will serve as a basis for suggesting methods of developing a curriculum in Korean writing as a liberal arts education designed for international students. To analyze problems presented in academic writing by international students, the standard of assessment was divided into interaction, knowledge construction, and material quotation. Then, knowledge construction was divided into contents, structure, and expression, and the items were subdivided in each category. These categories of assessment correspond to the genre of academic writing and are different from the existing standard of assessment for academic writing. Applying these standards, this research analyzed 43 texts of academic writing in process for a final paper by international students in an class and presented problems in them. Furthermore, this paper aims to give detailed feedback that can help solve those problems.

  • Since the year 2000, emphasis has been placed on a more strict evaluation of national academic societies and their journals, which has caused most societies to endeavour to produce higher quality journals and research. Korean Earth Science Society (KESS) should be such an exemplary model. Thus, the purpose of this study was to isolate characteristics of well-evaluated academic societies and explore the direction KESS should proceed to better its educational agents and strengthen its research contributions. Back in 2002, the Korean Research Foundation graded the journal of KESS as an officially qualified journal. It was bequeathed the first institute to be registered in the category of Earth Science. Furthermore, such classification was accepted as national academic classification and Scientific Citation Index through a public hearing executed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning in 2003. Currently, the Korean Research Foundation is reviewing a proposal to approve Earth Science as a unique citation index category. This proposal is quite crucial in that such an approval would be followed by increased funding and affect the future status of KESS. More support and interest from all members of KESS are required to establish the identity of Earth Science as an independent academic entity.

  • This study aims to explore the combinations of services and technologies for academic libraries to use based on librarians' perception and establish effective service strategies accordingly. The literature review facilitated an understanding of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies impacting the libraries. We discovered how technologies are transforming library services. We analyzed the academic library services to categorize their service structure. The survey revealed the necessity of introducing technology for each service category and the appropriate automation levels of services based on the perception of librarians. The survey results identified nine prioritized combinations of academic library services and technologies. Based on the analysis, we proposed the service-technology strategies for each category. This study has significance in exploring the potential for introducing and utilizing new technologies to enhance academic library services and exploring ways to combine services and technologies based on the common opinion of librarians.

As Korean Medicine is institutionally accepted to the same status of Western Medicine, the concept of complementary/alternative medicine needs to be realigned. Data-basing academic level Web Service DBpia, the trend of research in the field of complementary/alternative medicine was analyzed by focusing on 144 treatises listed in the Korean Journal. As the result, we could subgroup treatises as those of concept, category, current status, institutions, details, and miscellany. The treatises related to the answers to "What is Complementary/alternative medicine" apply to the category of 'concept' Likewise in category are listed the treatises covering range and kinds of medicine. In 'category', 'current status', the discussions about the direction of Complementary/alternative medicine pending and treatises dealing with clinical applications are covered. In 'institutions', treatises on policy-making are enlisted. In 'details', treatises applied on specific diseases were sub-grouped. Others not otherwise covered enlisted in the list of "Miscellany".

Methods: The study participants was 73 mothers of premature infants. Knowledge on premature infant's development and rearing was measured by measurement tools developed by previous research. The education needs about development and rearing were measured by self-report questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-Test, ANOVA using SPSS 20.0. Results: The score of knowledge on development was 59.3 out of 100. The category of knowledge on language development was rated the highest, and motor development category was the lowest. The score of knowledge on rearing was 77.8 out of 100. The knowledge on bathing category was rated the highest and defecation category was the lowest. The growth education needs for premature infant development was the highest education needs of premature infant development. The method for developmental improvement was the highest education needs of premature infant rearing. Conclusion: The results showed that premature infant mothers have less knowledge on premature development than premature rearing, also mothers were interested in development and there were many needs on premature infant's development.

  • The concept of blood circulation is so complex, dynamic and abstract that students have difficulty in understanding it and students' preconceptions hardly change into scientific concepts even after the lessons. The purpose of this study is to examine middle school, high school, and undergraduate students' understanding of blood circulation and to find the reason why the lack of deep understanding is displayed in students' explanations for the blood circulation. The study consists of three parts. First, the test was designed to investigate students' ideas for blood circulation as components of the structure, the function, the behavior and the mechanism. Second, the test was applied to 7th, 10th and 13th graders to investigate the students' understanding of blood circulation and categorize the types of students' blood circulation model according to their academic level. Finally, the concepts the students had little understanding of were analyzed to decide which ontological category they fell into and further to inquire the characteristics of each concept. The results showed that many students comprehend the structure and the function of blood circulation components well, and there was no significant difference in students' understanding according to the academic level. In contrast, understanding the behavior and the mechanism of circulatory components has remarkably improved in high school students and undergraduates majoring in science and engineering. Also, students' blood circulation models were classified into seven different types. High school students and undergraduates majoring in science and engineering demonstrated a significantly higher percentage on the type of double-loop-branch compared to other academic levels. In addition, it was found that the lack of deep understanding was caused by students' misconceiving the 'equilibrium' category as 'event' category.
