  • Recently, aspheric optical lenses and mirrors, which are harder to manufacture and measure than the conventional spherical ones, are widely used, particularly in electronic fabrication process. Generally, interferometric optical method is used for the measurement of spherical optical surface. However, the interferometric method for aspheric surface measurement is difficult because it needs a precise null corrector and strict environmental conditions such as constant temperature, humidity and vibrations. We have been studied on the manufacturing of aspheric optics to improve the surface profile accuracy and productivity using a corrective polishing process. For the corrective polishing, a practical method of On-Machine Measurement (OMM) is required. For this purpose, an optical OMM system has been studied using the Shach-Hartmann test, which is very robust to the practical polishing environment. The wavefront has been reconstructed from the measured data using the primary aberration polynomial function by the least squares fitting. The measured result of the OMM system shows that the maximum deviation is less than 200 nm for the one of commercial Fizeau interferometer Wyko 6000.

  • We developed an optical pickup system which is used fer Blu-ray Disc. A liquid crystal element was used to make compensation for spherical aberration. Spherical aberration is a difficult problem in the optical pickup system for Blu-ray Disc. To reduce the effects of wavelength variation from the laser source, we designed a diffraction optical element. We took a measurement of all of the parts used to make a pickup system and validated the performance of each part. Then, we made a performance test fur the optical pickup system which we developed for Blu-ray Disc and the results were satisfactory.

  • Optical system needs to be aligned before its undergoing process, is usually shows coma aberrations, which occurred due to imperfection in the lens or other components results in off-axis point sources, appearing to have a tail like a comet. There are some methods to correct coma aberration. In this paper, to correct coma aberration in optical system, using a robot arm type coordinate measuring machine(CMM). CMMs are widely used to measure the form of accuracy of parts and positioning accuracy of systems. Among them, robot arm type CMM has more advantages than the others, such as its mobility and measuring range. However, robot arm type CMM has lower accuracy than cantilever type CMM. To prove robot arm type CMM's accuracy, several factors were suggested in this paper and the final measuring results were compared to a commercial cantilever type CMM. Based on this accuracy, a typical optical system was successfully aligned by using our robot arm type CMM.

  • Aspheric optical lenses and mirrors are widely used in recent. It is more difficult to manufacture and measure the aspherical optics compared to conventional spherical ones. The interferometric optical test is common for the measurement of spherical optical surface. But the application of the interferometry to the measurement of aspheric surface is difficult because it needs a precise null corrector and very careful environmental conditions such as keeping constant temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and vibrations. To enhance productivity of optics manufacturing on-machine measurement and correction has been developed in this study. For practical applications, robustness of the measurement method to environments is more important. For the purpose an optical OMM(On-Machine Measurement) system has been developed using Shack-Hartmann test which has robustness to the environment. The wavefront has been reconstructed from the measured data using the primary aberration polynomial function by least square fitting. The measured result of the developed only system gives the maximum deviation only in 200 nm from the result measured by a commercial Fizeau interferometer Wyko 6000.

  • Recently, Plastic optical products are widely used. Injection molding process has advantages of low cost and high productivity. However, it remains a residual birefringence and residual stress by difference cooling. The present study focused on measuring birefringence in optical plastic parts using interference color pattern. The main idea of an analysis comes from chromatic aberration which is caused by difference light wavelengths. As a result, a complete system measuring the high order 2-D birefringence pattern was built. Further investigation is under way to improve the accuracy of birefringence measurement system by diode laser.

  • In response to the difficulty of synchronously obtaining multiwavelength images for fast two-dimensional (2D) temperature measurement, a multispectral framing imaging optical system is designed, based on the segmented-aperture imaging method and asymmetric surface shape. The system adopts a common-aperture four-channel array structure to synchronously collect multiwavelength temperature-field images. To solve the problem of asymmetric aberration caused by being off-axis, a model of the relationship between incident and outgoing rays is established to calculate the asymmetric custom surface. The designed focal length of the optical system is 80 mm, the F-number is 1:3.8, and the operating wavelength range is 0.48-0.65 ㎛. The system is divided into four channels, corresponding to wavelengths of 0.48, 0.55, 0.58, and 0.65 ㎛ respectively. The modulation transfer function value of a single channel lens is higher than 0.6 in the full field of view at 35 lp/mm. The experimental results show that the asymmetric-custom-surface imaging system can capture clear multiwavelength images of a temperature field. The framing imaging system can capture clear images of multiwavelength temperature fields, with high consistency in images of different wavelengths. The designed optical system can provide reliable multiwavelength image data for 2D temperature-field measurement.

  • Using a Shack-Hartmann sensor and sub-wavelength sized pinhole point source, we develope an optical testing system that measures the wavefront error of high numerical aperture and small sized optical components. The subwavelength sized pinhole generates perfect spherical waves with large diffraction angle and this makes possible to test high numerical aperture optics. The Shack-Hartmann sensor reconstructs the wavefront and calculates the aberrations. We make a home-made reference plane wave source which generates nearly perfect plane waves and the calibration with this plane source gives the overall uncertainty of the optical testing system 0.010 $\lambda$ rms.

  • Using a Shack-Hartmann sensor, we construct an optical testing system measuring the wavefront error of small optical components. The systematic error of the sensor is compensated with a reference plane-wave system that produces almost perfect plane waves. Several types of lenses are tested using a point source that generates spherical waves emitted from a pinhole. The results of the optical testing obtained with the Shack- Hartman sensor are compared with those measured with Zygo interferometer.

  • In this paper, spherical aberration and light concentrating efficiency of lens was measured. The measuring system is applying spherical aberration occurrence principal and could measure a temperature at focal plane by using the thermocouple. The sun which is located in infinite distance and could makes parallel ray is used as a illuminant or heat source in experiments. It is confirmed that light concentrating efficiency of optical lens is in inverse proportion to spherical aberration and.

  • In general, such methods as interferometers or wavefront sensors are commonly used for testing of an optical system and optical components. In these cases, the surrounding environments are unlikely to affect the measurements. On the other hand, intraocular lenses of hydrophilic materials with special properties experience a certain difficulty in testing the optical properties. An intraocular lens is dried in the air, which causes deformation and changes the optical characteristics such as index of refraction and thickness. Thus, it is hard to measure the optical characteristics of an intraocular lens by using common methods. In this study, a special structure is used for measuring of the transmission wavefront aberration and effective focal length of an intraocular lens of hydrophilic materials by using a Shark-Hartmann sensor among the various measuring methods. As an application of this measuring method, this study shows a simple method to measure the index of refraction of unknown liquids with a plano-convex lens with a well known index of refraction. Also, this method is used to measure the optical properties of a plano-convex such as index of refraction and curvature by using a liquid with a well known index of refraction.
