인구집단의 비교를 통한 폐금속광산 지역 주민의 카드뮴 노출수준 및 건강영향평가 (Health Impact Assessment for Cadmium Exposure: Comparison of Residents around Abandoned Mines with the General Population)

  • Objective: We compared the level of blood cadmium exposure with health impacts by using data from a survey of residents near an abandoned mine and a national health survey. Methods: For this study, we used data from 7,046 individuals who participated in the Health Effects Survey of Abandoned Metal Mines (AMS, 2008-2011) and 6,871 individuals who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV-VI (KNHANES, 2008-2013). To evaluate the health impacts, the quartiles (S1 to S4) were classified according to blood cadmium concentration, and then the odds ratios of S2 to S4 over S1 for exceeding the reference values of renal function, blood pressure, and bone density were compared. Similarly, the odds ratio of AMS over KNHANES was confirmed. Results: In the AMS, adjusted for general characteristics, the geometric mean of blood cadmium concentration was 1.34 ㎍/L, which was statistically significantly higher than that of the KNHANES 1.22 ㎍/L (p<0.001). In the integrated data of AMS and KNHANES, the estimated odds ratio of S4 over S1 for exceeding the reference value was found to be 1.70 for serum creatinine, 1.71 for hypertension, and a T-score 2.02 for the tarsal bone. They were all statistically significant. Conclusion: Residents around abandoned metal mines had a higher blood cadmium concentration than the general population, and the odds for exceeding the reference values were higher for some health indicators. Continuous biomonitoring should be conducted for vulnerable areas such as around abandoned metal mines, and measures to reduce cadmium exposure and management of chronic diseases are needed.

폐광지역의 오염현황 및 환경관리 전략 (Envionmental Problems of Abandoned Mining Sites and Their Recovery)

  • 현재 우리나라에서 휴 폐광된 광산수는 약 500여개가 넘는 것으로 추정되고 있다. 휴 폐광된 광산은 경관의 저해 및 분진발생, 중금속에 의한 토양, 지하수 및 하천오염, 산성광산 배수의 생선, 지반붕괴 등 안전사고의 위험 등의 환경문제를 안고 있다. 국내에서 조사된 일부 휴 폐광된 금속광산의 오염현황을 보면 폐석 방치, 침출수, 갱내수의 유출, 인근 하천 및 토양의 중금속 오염, 시설물의 붕괴위험을 안고 있는 폐광산이 상당히 발견되고 있다. 휴 폐광된 광산의 관리대책으로서는 법규를 정비하여 토양환경보전법에 광산지역의 토양오염기준 복원기준 등이 설정되어야 한다. 또한 광산폐수, 폐기물을 적절히 처리해야 하며 지반침하대책 및 폐광의 지하공간 활용 등에 관한 연구가 진행되어야한다. 이러한 대책을 추진하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 먼저 휴 폐광에 대한 조사가 선행되어야 하며 오염복원순위의 설정, 재원 및 전문인력의 확충이 필요하다.

Health Risk Assessment through Residents Exposure to Toxic Metals in Soil and Groundwater in the Vicinity of Sanyang Metal Mine

  • BACKGROUND: Metal mines were actively developed in the early twentieth century in Korea; however, most of these mines were closed and abandoned without proper management. Therefore, toxic metal contamination in the vicinity of Korean abandoned metal mines has been reported. A risk assessment for these metals was performed for residents near by abandoned Sanyang metal mine. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil and groundwater samples were collected from May to October 2007 around the mine. After pretreatment of these samples, metal concentrations were measured and then a risk assessment was performed using the Korean soil-contamination risk assessment guidelines. Cancer risk was the highest from inhalation of Pb-contaminated soil, followed in descending order by As-contaminated soil inhalation and water ingestion. The sum of carcinogenic risks was $3.35{\times}10^{-3}$. The noncarcinogenic risk was observed for inhalation of Hg-contaminated soil (5.71). CONCLUSION: Inhalation of soil in dust was the principal pathway to cause the health risk and most of the risk was attributed to As, Pb,Cd, and Hg contamination.

경북지역 폐금속광산이 환경에 미치는 영향 (Environmental Effects Caused by Abandoned Metal Mines in the Kyungpook Province)

  • The heavy metal contents are more abundant in stream waters, paddy soils and rice plants in the vicinity of abandoned mines compared to the surrounding areas in the Kyungpook province. However, these contents tend to decrease with distance from mines, and show some variation under different geological and geochemical environments. The Sin-stream waters have high contents of Cu=4.9 ppm, Pb=0.1 ppm, Zn=3.5 ppm and other heavy metals (Ni, Co, Cd) at Dalsung abandoned mine and low contents of Cu=0.4 ppm, Pb=0.1 ppm, Zn=0.1 ppm and other metals= 0.002 ppm in the surrounding area. The high contents decrease in the downstream in the area of calcareous sedimentary rocks. The paddy soils have high contents of approximately Cu=51 ppm, Pb=83 ppm, Zn=211 ppm, and Cd=11.3 ppm in the vicinity of Gunwi abandoned mine but low contents of Cu=4.5 ppm, Pb=2.9 ppm, Zn=60 ppm and Cd=0.4 ppm in the surrounding area. The Dadeog abandoned mine also shows similar trends to Gunwi mine. The contents of heavy metals of rice plants are high in the roots but trends to decrease through stem+leaf and become low in brown rices.

토양 및 광미의 용출실험을 이용한 폐광산오염수준의 모니터링 (Pollutant Monitoring of Abandoned Mines using the Leaching Test with Soils and Tailings)

  • 국내에서는 심각한 환경문제를 유발하는 폐광산으로부터의 중금속오염도 모니터링사업을 위해 토양 중의 중금속 함양 분석을 실시하고 있다. 그러나 중금속의 오염도 수준은 토양 중의 농도 뿐 만 아니라 이들의 용출 및 이동에 의한 오염도 확산에 의한 평가를 간과해서는 안 된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 중금속 오염이 심한 폐광산 인근의 토양과 광미를 대상으로 용출시험을 실시하여 8개 중금속의 용출 수준을 파악하였다. 2개 지점에서의 시료를 대상으로 한 결과, Pb, Cd 및 Mn의 용출거동이 유사하였고, Cu와 As의 용출거동이 유사하였다. Zn의 경우에는 다른 중금속과 달리 45일간의 시험기간 동안 지속적으로 용출이 발생하였으며, 높은 농도(40 mg/kg)로 검출되었다. 이것은 아연의 총함유량이 많은 것과 토양중에서 이온상태로 쉽게 용출되는 ORP의 조건으로 설명할 수 있다. 따라서 이들 중금속의 용출에는 pH 뿐 만 아니라 산화환원전위도 많은 영향을 미치므로, 폐광산 관리에 있어서는 중금속의 함유 농도 뿐 만 아니라 이들의 산화환원전위도 함께 조사하여야 할 것으로 판단된다. 이러한 물리적 특성을 기초로 화학형태를 예측할 수 있으므로 용출정도를 판단할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 폐광산 유래의 중금속으로부터의 리스크를 저감할 수 있다.

국내 휴/폐광 금속황산 주변의 중금속 환경오염 평가 (Environmental Assessment of Heavy Metals Anna Abandoned Metalliferous Mine in Korea)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 국내의 휴폐광 금속광산의 중금속 오염을 종합적으로 평가하는 것이다. 그 동안 정부와 지방자치단체 및 개별 연구자에 의해 이루어진 휴폐광 금속광산의 중금속 오염도를 종합적으로 조사한 결과, 주요 오염물질은 광미를 포함한 광산폐기물이었다. 이들로부터 다양한 유독성 물질, 특히 As, Cd, Cu, Pb 및 Zn 등이 바람과 물에 의해 하부 수계로 이동되어 환경문제를 일으키고 있다. 그 결과 많은 광산들 주변에서 다량의 As 및 중금속이 검출되었으며, 일부는 토양환경보전법의 우려기준 및 대책기준을 초과하고 있다. 초과 항목 중에서는 비소의 초과 빈도가 가장 높았으며 그 다음으로 Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn 등의 오염 빈도도 높은 편이었다. 국가에서 지속적인 광해방지사업을 시행함에도 불구하고 아직도 많은 광산에서 오염물질이 배출되고 있는 실정이다. 특히, 다양한 추출법을 적용하여 오염물질의 추출량을 조사한 결과, 광미 및 토양은 지구화학적 특성을 잘 반영하고 있다. 종합적으로 볼 때, 정부주도로 휴폐광산의 관리를 위한 전담기구의 설치가 필요하다.

폐광산지역 토양에서 중금속과 PAHs 농도 분포 상관관계 (Distribution Correlation between Heavy Metals Contaminants and PAHs Concentrations of Soils in the Vicinity of Abandoned Mines)

  • BACKGROUND: Heavy metals contamination of soils in the vicinity of abandoned mines in South Korea has been investigated. However, PAHs contamination rarely has been studied. Both heavy metals and PAHs concentrations have been measured in this study. METHODS AND RESULTS: The samples of soil and sediment were collected from the vicinities of three abandoned coal mines and two abandoned metal mines for analysis of heavy metals contaminants and PAHs concentration from April to September 2012. After preparation of these samples following the Korean standard test method for soils, the concentrations of heavy metals contaminants and PAHs were measured using ICP-OES and GC-MS, respectively. It was observed that the concentration of Arsenic was above the concern level based on 'area 1' suggested by Korean soil conservation law, resulting that Arsenic is the main contaminant in these areas. Also Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were observed as a partial contaminants. The concentrations of other investigated components including benzo(a)pyrene were less than the concern level. CONCLUSION: The correlation observed between Arsenic (as main contaminant) and PAHs concentrations suggested that the contaminant source and pathway are different for each other. The effect of mine activity on PAHs concentration was rarely observed.

경북지역 토양의 중금속 분석 (Analysis for Soil Pollution by Heavy Metals in the Area of Kyongbuk)

  • The investigation was initiated with data from 27 abandoned mines along with 12 locations in Kyongbuk abandoned mines. The analyses for soil pollution by heavy metal pollutants were conducted by using correlation analysis, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis. The correlation analysis indicated that Ni and pH were highly correlated compared to those of other heavy metal ions. The principal component analyses showed that the heavy metal ions might be classified into two catagories, such as antropogenic and lithogenic components. The cluster analysis was also clearly divided by two groups. The respective two groups might be Pb-Zn-Cd-Cu and As-Hg-Ni.

국내 폐 광산 환경오염 실태 및 처리 현황 (Environmental Pollution and Reclamation in the Abandoned Mines in Korea)

  • 국내 폐석탄 광산은 334 개, 폐금속 광산은 약 900 여개로 알려져 있다. 이러한 폐광산에서는 환경오염과 지반침하 등 안전문제가 발생하고 있다. 폐광산에서 환경오염은 주로 폐갱도, 채굴적 그리고 광산폐기물 적치장에서 유출되는 산성광산배수 문제와 중금속이 함유된 광산폐기물의 침식 및 유실로 인한 주변 토양오염 등을 들 수 있다. 폐석탄 광산 및 폐금속 광산의 갱내수를 조사 분석한 결과, 일부 폐광산 갱내수들은 산성수이며 금속성분이 고농도로 함유된 폐수로 나타나고 폐탄광 배수의 수질은 지역적으로 차이가 있다. 폐광산배수의 정화는 물리화학적 처리시 막대한 운영비가 소요되므로 폐갱도 석회석 충전과 소택지 등 자연정화처리법으로 처리되고 있다. 현재 폐금속 광산 폐기물은 환경오염 방지를 위해 주로 매립법으로 복구되고 있다.

폐금속광산 지역 주민의 비소 대사에 영향을 미치는 MTHFR, As3MT, GSTO1 유전자 다형성 (MTHFR, As3MT and GSTO1 Polymorphisms Influencing Arsenic Metabolism in Residents Near Abandoned Metal Mines in South Korea)

  • Background: In South Korea, areas around abandoned metal mines are designated as regions with high arsenic (As) contamination. However, studies assessing urinary As exposure, As metabolism, and relevant genetic polymorphisms in residents of these metal mine areas are lacking. Objectives: To identify factors associated with As exposure and evaluate the effects of MTHFR, As3MT, and GSTO1 genetic polymorphisms on As metabolism in residents of abandoned metal mine areas by measuring urinary As species. Methods: Urinary As species (arsenite [As3+], arsenate [As5+], monomethyl arsonic acid, and dimethylarsinic acid) were isolated using high-performance liquid chromatography in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). Four genetic polymorphisms (MTHFR A222V, MTHFR E429A, GSTO1 A140D, As3MT M287T) were analyzed in 144 residents of four areas around abandoned metal mines. Results: The study sample was comprised of 34.7% men and 65.3% women, with a mean age of 70.7±10.9 years. The urinary inorganic As concentration was higher among those consuming more than half locally produced rice (0.31 ㎍/L) than those consuming less than half such rice (0.18 ㎍/L). The urinary dimethylarsinic acid concentration was higher in the group that had consumed seafood in the past day (31.68 ㎍/L) than in those who had not (22.37 ㎍/L). Furthermore, individuals heterozygous in the MTHFR A222V and GSTO1 A140D polymorphism had higher urinary arsenic species concentrations than did individuals with a wild type or homozygous for the variant allele. Conclusions: Consumption of locally produced rice was associated with inorganic As exposure, whereas seafood consumption was associated with organic As exposure among residents of abandoned metal mine areas. There was no clear association between MTHFR A222V and GSTO1 A140D polymorphisms and As metabolism.
