In this study, a new quantitative instrumentation and measurement standards applicable to the field of mining has been proposed to improve the problems of the current measurement practices that apply the measuring standards of the civil engineering field (road, railway, etc.). With the data coordination of the mine reclamation corporation, we collected data on ground subsidence in the abandoned mine area, and studied various techniques for establishing a new management reference value based on the manual measurement data measured in the field. As a result, new instrumentation and measurement standards is set up and proposed by using statistics like the average value, the third quartile, the 95% confidence, and the maximum value.
For the monitoring of six viral disease (CIV: canine influenzavirus, CPIV: canine parainfluenzavirus, CHV: canine herpesvirus, CPV2: canine parvovirus type 2, CCoV: canine coronavirus, CNV: canine norovirus) inspections, a total of 300 samples were collected nasal or feces from the companion dogs of animal hospital (n=98) and the abandoned dogs of animal shelters (n=202) in Gwangju, Korea. Using PCR and RT-PCR, CPV2, CPIV and CHV were detected in 55 (18.3%), 11 (3.7%), 1 (0.3%), respectively. CPV2 was highly detected in May, October and November. and CPIV was highly detected in November. But those agents were not detected the virus in March and July. Based on the results of the investigation continuous monitoring for companion and abandoned dogs will be required.
Efficient database and DBMS are essential for GIS analysis of subsidence in the abandoned mine area. A data structure and a suitable analysis method were proposed for an efficient analysis of subsidence in the abandoned mine area. Data models for the location of mine, ground water level, subsidence measurement and subsidence cracks were defined and structured to the database.
BACKGROUND: Metal mines were actively developed in the early twentieth century in Korea; however, most of these mines were closed and abandoned without proper management. Therefore, toxic metal contamination in the vicinity of Korean abandoned metal mines has been reported. A risk assessment for these metals was performed for residents near by abandoned Sanyang metal mine. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil and groundwater samples were collected from May to October 2007 around the mine. After pretreatment of these samples, metal concentrations were measured and then a risk assessment was performed using the Korean soil-contamination risk assessment guidelines. Cancer risk was the highest from inhalation of Pb-contaminated soil, followed in descending order by As-contaminated soil inhalation and water ingestion. The sum of carcinogenic risks was $3.35{\times}10^{-3}$. The noncarcinogenic risk was observed for inhalation of Hg-contaminated soil (5.71). CONCLUSION: Inhalation of soil in dust was the principal pathway to cause the health risk and most of the risk was attributed to As, Pb,Cd, and Hg contamination.

This study was carried out to develop technologies of restoration and revegetation through monitoring the change of vegetation after setting up 3 type experimental sites on abandoned coal-mine lands. According to the results of 7 month's monitoring, sown species and a variety of invading species appeared at experimental sites. Moreover, the number of species, individuals and the ratio of coverage increased as time passed on. After 5 months, each experiment sites showed the result of successful revegetation. The most effective sites was treated by overspreading 1 cm loam soil on coal minesoil. As a result of this study, it is considered that the revegetation of abandoned coal-mine lands can be achieved effectively by making the minimum of foundation layer and improving the efficiency through mechanized construction. Besides, it is recommended to use native and early stage-succession species adapting themselves to coal minesoil, such as Gramineae, Leguminosae, Compositae and etc.
The objectives of this study were to select optimal soil amendments through analysis of heavy metal availability in soil and uptake to Aster koraiensis Nakai for forest rehabilitation of heavy metal contaminated soil of abandoned metal mine. A. koraiensis was cultivated for 6 months at contaminated soil with several soil treatments (bottom ash 1 and 2%, fly ash 1 and 2%, waste lime+oyster 1 and 2%, Acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS) 10 and 20%, compost 3.4%, non-contaminated natural forest soil, and control). The analysis results of heavy metal concentrations in the soil by Mehlich-3 mehthod, growth and heavy metal concentrations of A. koraiensis showed that waste oyster+lime 1% and compost were more effective than the other amendments for phytostabilization. However, it is needed comprehensive review of factors such as on-site condition, slope covering to reduce soil erosion and vegetation introduction from surround forest for revegetation to apply forest rehabilitation.

Owing to the urbanization, the industrialization and joining to WTo, there are lots of fallow and abandoned farmlands in Korea. Those results have occurred inefficient land use and destruction of agricultural ecosystem with the secondary succession and invasion of alien weeds. Using these fallow and abandoned farmlands, Korean government tries to create the ecological parks for the nature conservation, amenity, education and research, etc. For these purposes, materials on the ecological park construction were gathered from abroad such as England, Germany, Switzerland and Japan and also field trips to those countries were executed in April,1996. Accordingly, the goal for the ecological parks could be set suitably to Korean situation as of Japanese styles which are characterized by man-made biotopes. For a case study, dragonfly was selected as an indicator of the rehabilitation of water-side ecosystem, arid a site was selected for the dragonfly biotope under the criteria of selection to the Experimental Farm of Korea University including near abandoned farmlands (Dogok-ri, Wabu-eup, Namyangju city Kyunggi-do). Natural and cultural factors of this site were inventoried and analyzed, and then with the results dragonfly biotope was planned to the site with the detailed ecotechnology.

In lotic wetlands, runner reed (Phragmites japonicus) plays a role as a pioneer, which helps other plant species to settle by making dense roots trapping floating-sediments. In lentic wetlands, on the other hand, P. japonicus could play a role as an invader threatening biodiversity by forming tall and dense stands. To conserve an abandoned paddy terrace in mountainous areas, a habitat of an endangered dragonfly species (Nannophya pygmaea), from the monotypic-occupation by P. japonicus, we applied three kinds of treatment: (1) hand-clipping in 2009, (2) mechanical excavating in 2012, and (3) planting of alternative vegetational unit in 2012. We have monitored vegetation changes in the wetland in 2008~2012 and 2017. Vegetation cover of P. japonicus sharply decreased from 43% in 2011 to 16% in 2012 by the mechanical excavation. After 5 years from applying the treatment, Schoenoplectiella mucronata that was utilized in the planting became the predominant species instead of P. japonicus and the number of wetland plant species increased from 16 to 25 with the shift in species composition. This study showed the utility of three control methods of P. japonicas in a lentic wetland.
The transition from manufacturing to service-based economies in highly developed societies during the post-industrial period resulted in the decline of the industrial landscape, leaving it abandoned or underutilized. In pursuit of revitalizing the obsolete industrial space, innovative design techniques based on adaptive reuse are applied to retrofit modern functions to create a new cultural space and preserve the historical, symbolic, and cultural importance of the abandoned industrial facilities. Design considerations based on facade redesign have proven to be one of the most adopted techniques that can help in recreating a new function for the vacant industrial buildings and integrating them into the present-day urban fabric. This paper examines the facade renovation elements used for the adaptive reuse of 15 abandoned industrial buildings presently used as multi-purpose facilities in South Korea. Through a questionnaire survey, this study analyzes the respondents' preference for different facade renovation elements in the 15 sites according to age and gender. The study found that both genders showed similar preference patterns between most elements. But on some elements, females were keener and expressed a stronger opinion than males. There were much more females than males who perceived color and material as the most important exterior elements. The findings of this study can be used for the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings according to user preferences for different facade renovation elements.

This study was to develop the most effective cooling system which is needed to cool greenhouse during summer night to get early blooming of strawberries. Various cooling systems were designed and constructed to utilize the cool air and water from tan abandoned coal mine. Cooling systems built for this study were an evaporative cooling system with pad, cooling system using a small or large radiator , and duct cooling system using cool are drawn from coal mine. These systems were individual tested to investigate their effects on cooling greenhouse during summer night. Also, a combined cooling system was tested with operating an evaporative cooling system, small radiator, and duct cooling system simultaneously. The results in this study showed that individual cooling systems such as evaporative cooling system, small radiator, and cooling duct had about the same effect on cooling greenhouse. The combined system had little better cooling effect than that of individual cooling syst m except the large radiator . The most effective system for cooling of greenhouse was obtained with using a large a large radiator as the heat exchanger. With operating a large radiator, temperature inside the greenhouse was dropped to about 15-16$^{\circ}C$ while outside temperature was 23-24$^{\circ}C$ during summer night.
