  • This article aims to introduce a representative case of convergence among art, technology and science, and look into the factors that contributed to its success. The focus is specifically brought to the cooperation between the Plantin Press and local painters in Antwerp in the Netherlands during the 16th century. The Plantin Press scored huge successes through collaboration with Flemish artists such as Rubens and Borcht. This helped the artists to use their talents in a new medium or to secure a job that appreciates their values. The Plantin Press outdid its competitors in the market through applying new techniques on its works. Great botany books also came out as a result of such convergence. The backdrop to the Netherlands appearing as the center of botanical studies in the 17th century is the concerted efforts of the painters that created quality illustrations and the publishers that knew how to use them efficiently.

For the study, 251 questionnaires were analyzed using the SPSS v.18.0 statistical package program. First, there was statistically significant difference in psychological stability, favorable image, and maintaining state of scalp and hair management according to DiSC behavior type. In case of Shin Jung - hyung (C), psychological stability, Positive images, and maintaining good condition. Second, DiSC and hair management behaviors according to DiSC behaviors showed statistically significant difference in state cognition management and product use management. In the case of cognition type (C) and social type (I) Product use management. The results of this study suggest that hair management awareness and behavior, which is dependent on DiSC behaviors of consumers, are provided as basic data for corporate marketing strategy.

  • To investigate the natural cosmetic ingredients of Benincasa hispida seed extract on skin care, we measured anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, and whitening effect. DPPH free radical scavenging activity was increased in a dose-dependent manner. The total phenolic content was higher in methanol extract (22.42±0.002 mgGAE/g) than water extract (9.77±0.002 mgGAE/g). MTT assay was demonstrated that the seed extract did not have a cytotoxic effect in RAW264.7 and B16F10 cell lines. We also examined to find out the inhibitory activity on NO production and secretion of TNF-α cytokine in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. In B16F10 melanoma cells, the seed extract significantly suppressed α-MSH induced melanin synthesis. Furthermore, westernblot analysis revealed that methanol extract dramatically downregulated the expression level of MITF, TRP-1 and TRP-2. Taken together, the B. hispida seed extract posses anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin whitening activities, which might provided its functional efficacy in cosmetic materials.

  • In the late 16th century, the Theatrum Anatomicum or anatomical theatre opened in Leiden in the Netherlands. The theatre was open to a fee-paying audience of students, surgeons, and the public and soon settled down as one of the highbrow cultural activities in the city. This trend soon spread into Amsterdam, and Nicholaes Tulp appearing in Rembrandt van Rijn's was at the center of it. Human anatomy was not just an eyesore but started to get accepted as a cultural event for the civilized citizens of the time. It was with this backdrop that Rembrandt got inspired by this interesting scene of Tulp dissecting human body. Rembrandt well understood the changes of the time and captured them on canvas to attempt convergence between science and art.

  • The aim of the study was to evaluate the physiological activity of Lycium ruthenicum to investigate their potential as a raw material that can be used in the cosmetic industry. L. ruthenicum fruit extracts were obtained using 70% methanol(LRM) and hot-water(LRW). The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging abilities were higher in the LRM extract than in the LRW extract. The FRAP value of LRM was about 1.3-fold greater than that of LRW. The polyphenol contents of LRM and LRW were 31.883±1.395 mg/g and 27.748±2.741 mg/g respectively. LRM inhibited the generation of NO in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. LRM also attenuated the expression of COX-2, PGE2, IL-6, and TNF-α induced by LPS. These results suggests that L. ruthenicum fruits could be use as a source of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agent in cosmetic products.
