AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF BLEACHING AGENTS (치아경조직(齒牙硬組織)에 있어 표백제(漂白劑)의 효과(效果)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • As widely known major cause of tooth discoloration is red blood cell in dentinal tubules after tooth trauma and extirpation. Hemoglobin in the red cells easily conbine with hydrogen sulfide and change natural tooth color into dark brown. To confirm and compare the effect of bleaching agents test material was made as fellows: No. 40 paper points were soaked in blood and put into the oven for 24 hours to dry. Dried paper points were again soaked in diluted yolk by distilled water for a minute and kept the points for a week to get fully sulfide. Hydrogen peroxide (25%), Sodium hypochlorite (2%), Sodium hyposulfate (2%), Sodium perborate and mixture of Hydrogen peroxide (25%) and Sodium perborate were employed as bleaching agents. About 0.2ml of each medicaments were put into the small test tubes and blood soaked paper points were gently placed vertically with the apex downward and kept 24 hours in the oven ($37^{\circ}C$). Every 24 hours the medicaments were renewed at 24 and 48 hours. Following are the results of the study: 1. Significant bleaching effect was found on the case of hydrogen peroxide (25%) after 24 hours. The area above 2mm from apex also fully bleached after 48 hours. 2. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate treated case showed moderate effect at 24 hours and significant effect at 48 hours. High portion of the point (above 2mm) was bleached satisfactory at 72 hours. 3. The effect of sodium perborate at 48 hours showed moderate and significant at 72 hours. 4. Sodium hypochlorite and sodium hyposulfate were weak agent in bleaching. At 72 hours case revealed moderate effect and influenced on high portion of the point very weak effect.

Finding of Relation Between 4th Lumbar Rotational Malposition and Scoliosis (요추 4번의 회전변위와 척추측만증과의 상관성에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out the relation between 4th lumbar rotational malposition and scoliosis. Methods : We investigated 22 cases of patients who were diagnosed as scoliosis. We used AP & Lateral view X-ray for patients. And we analysed the relation between 4th lumbar rotational malposition and scoliosis. Results : P-value was 0.436 between 4th lumbar rotational amount and lordotic angle, and was 0.758 between 4th lumbar rotational amount and wedge angle(p>0.05). And p-value was 0.022 between 4th lumbar rotational amount and scoliotic apex rotational amount(p<0.05), but was 0.286 between 4th lumbar rotational amount and Cobb's angle(p>0.05). Conclusions : The results suggest that 4th lumbar rotational malposition was statistically correlation with scoliotic apex rotational malposition, was not Cobb's angle, 4th lumbar lordotic & wedge angle.

EFFECT OF VARIOUS CANAL PREPARATION TECHNIQUES USING ROTARY NICKEL-TITANIUM FILES ON THE MAINTENANCE OF CANAL CURVATURE (수종의 엔진구동형 Nickel-Titanium file을 이용한 근관형성 방법이 근관만곡도 유지능력에 미치는 영향)

  • There are increasing usage of Nickel-Titanium rotary files in modern clinical endodontic treatment because it is effective and faster than hand filing due to reduced step. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of canal preparations using 3 different rotary Nickel-Titanium files that has different cross sectional shape and taper on the maintenance of canal curvature. Simulated resin block were instrumented with Profile(Dentsply, USA), GT rotary files(Dentsply, USA), Hero 642(Micro-Mega France), and Pro-Taper(Dentsply, USA). The image of Pre-instrumentation and Post-instrumentation were acquired using digital camera and overspreaded in the computer. Then the total differences of canal diameter, deviation at the outer portion of curvature, deviation at the inner portion of curvature, movement of center of the canal and the centering ratio at the pre-determined level from the apex were measured. Results were statistically analyzed by means of ANOVA, followed by Scheffe test at a significance level of 0.05. The results were as follows; 1. Deviation at the outer portion of curvature, deviation at the inner portion of curvature were showed largest in Pro-Taper so also did in the total differences of canal diameter(p<0.05). 2. All the groups showed movements of center Profile combined with GT rotary files and Hero 642 has no difference but Pro-Taper showed the most deviation(p<0.05). 3. At the 1, 2, 3mm level from the apex movements of center directed toward the outer portion of curvature, but in 4, 5 mm level directed toward the inner portion of curvature(p<0.05). As a results of this study, it could be concluded that combined use of other Nickel-Titanium rotary files is strongly recommended when use Pro-Taper file because it could be remove too much canal structure and also made more deviation of canal curvature than others.

  • Curcuma alismatifolia is becoming popular for cut flowers and potted plants due to its long inflorescence with many showy pink flowers. It is propagated by rhizomes and inflorescences that are similar to those of lotus. However, initiation of inflorescence development of each bract and flower has not been investigated. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to study the inflorescence development of Curcuma alismatifolia 'Chiangmai Pink' by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). When new shoots grew to 15-20 cm in a greenhouse at $25^{\circ}C$, the first bract initiated with a dome-shaped inflorescence apex, followed by initiation of additional bracts, forming the shape of the flower head. Florets were subtended by the first bract when five to seven bracts were formed. Four to six florets were subtended by each bract. The floret positioned in the center initiated and progressed upward first. When the center florets in the upper bracts were formed, florets next to the center floret subtended by the first bract were formed, and formation of the axillary florets progressed upward in sequential order.

  • Delayed eruption of a maxillary incisor results in midline shift, the space occupied by adjacent teeth and different levels of alveolar height. Extraction or surgical/orthodontic therapy is the most common treatment for a impacted maxillary incisor. Surgical repositioning provides another option for treatment of this problem. The advantages of this approach include immediate esthetic improvement, use of a single and simplified surgical procedure, simple and short orthodontic therapy, a normal gingival margin and the possibility of the developing root adapting to the new position. Autotransplantation of an immature tooth provides for possible adaptation of the developing root apex to the new position. A root with an open apex has good chance of pulp revascularization after transplantation.

Design and Experiment of an Optical System using a Prism with a High Enough Refractive Index for Wet Fingerprint Identification (물 묻은 지문을 인식하기 위한 프리즘 광학계의 설계 및 실험적 고찰)

  • We propose a design and analysis of an optical system using a prism with a high enough refractive index for wet fingerprint identification. Important parameters including the tilting angle($\beta$) of the $1^{st}$ image plane, an anamorphic distortion, and a tilt of image plane are considered in terms of the apex angle of the prism($\alpha$) and refractive index of the prism material. Our suggestion on refractive index and apex angle of the prism corroborates well with experimental results.

A STUDY ON THE ACCURACY OF THE ROOT-ZX IN THE CANAL WITH MECHANICALLY FORMED CONSTRICTION (기계적 협착부를 갖는 근관에서 Root-ZX의 정확도에 관한 연구)

  • Currently electronic apex locators have been widely used to determine working length in endodontic treatment. According to Manufacture's recommendation, it is beneficial to find the working length before instrumenting the canal. However, in crown-down pressureless technique, working length of tooth is established following coronal instrumentation 3mm short of radiographic apex. In narrow canals, mechanically formed constriction might be established by coronal instrumentation in some distance from anatomical constriction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Root-ZX in the canal with mechanical constriction following considerable coronal enlargement with ProFile .06 series. The 40 root canals in 30 extracted mandibular molars were accessed, and their actual length (AL) established by passing a size 10 file just through the minor apical foramen. The teeth were then embedded in an acrylic container with normal saline. The initial canal length(IL) was measured with Root-ZX by negotiating a size 10 file to the apical constriction. The canal was sequentially enlarged to size 40 with ProFile .06 file 3mm short of actual length. The enlarged final canal lengths (FL) were obtained with a size 15 file. The average values of IL, FL were calculated and compared using Repeated measures Analysis of Variance followed Turkey's Studentized Range test. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The initial canal length was 0.12mm shorter than actual canal length(P>0.05). 2. The differences between initial canal length and final canal length were not significant(P>0.05). 3. As a result of this study, regardless of mechanically formed constriction. Root-ZX differentiated between mechanical and anatomic constriction.

A STUDY ON THE ACCURACY OF THE ROOT-ZX ACCORDING TO THE VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF ROOT CANALS (근관내 여러 가지 조건에 따른 Root-ZX의 정확도에 관한 연구)

  • Currently frequency-dependent type electronic apex locators have been widely used to determine the working length in endodontic treatment. But, accuracy of electronic apex locators is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Root-ZX(Morita Co., Japan) at different kinds of conditions of root canals compared with the radiographic working length. The 40 extracted human anterior teeth with fully formed apices and without any caries were used. The radiographs were taken for working length with the 0.5mm short of #15 K-file tip just visible at the foramen under the surgical microscope(Carl Zeiss Co. Germany) at 25X. Then the electronic working lengths were determined with Root-ZX at the different kinds of conditions of root canals according to the presence of electrolyte and Crown-down pressureless technique. The results were as follows ; 1. There was no significant statistical difference in working length between radiograph and Root-ZX. 2. There was no significant statistical difference in electronic working length between the canal with electrolyte and without electrolyte. 3. There was no significant statistical difference in electronic working length between the canal without any instrumentation and after Crown-dow pressureless technique. 4. Of the total 40 root canals, 85% in Group I, 92.5% in Group II, 95% in Group III and 95% in Group IV using Root-ZX showed coincidence within 0.5mm accuracy compaing with the radiographic working length. The results showed that the Root-ZX can be use effectively for measuring the working length of root canal after instrumentation with Crown-down pressureless technique regardless of the presence of electrolyte in root canal.

PATHOLOGIC ROOT RESORPTION OF PRIMARY CENTRAL INCISORS (상악 유중절치의 병적 치근 흡수)

  • Physiologic root resorption occur from the apex of the primary teeth close to the permanent teeth towards the apex. Pathologic root resorption occur on surfaces of root due to causes such as trauma, replantation, orthodontic treatment, delayed or irregular eruption of teeth, or growing cysts or tumors. In children, the most frequently affected teeth from trauma are the maxillary primary central incisors. After such an event, root resorption initiate from the traumatized pulp or periodontium. In this case report, periapical radiographs were used to evaluate the features of pathologic root resorption by studying patients with history of trauma. The following results were noted. 1. Pathologic root resorption was observed in various patterns in all of the 10 traumatized maxillary primary central incisors. 2. Though teeth with pathologic root resorption were treated with pulpectomy, the resorption process continued to progress.

The Scope of Regenerative Endodontics on Open-Apices in Young Permanent Teeth (영구치의 개방성 치근첨에 대한 재생 근관치료적 의견)

  • Numerous challenges in treating permanent dentition are encountered, especially in treating immature teeth with pulp necrosis. Historically, calcium hydroxide application during long periods of time was used to induce the formation of a calcific barrier across the open apex. In 2004, a new treatment modality for the management of the open apex was introduced. This treatment was named as 'revascularization' and gained acceptance among dentists. The protocol was different from the traditional apexification techniques in that the canal was irrigated and disinfected with a combination of three antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, metronidazole and minocycline). At the next appointment, bleeding was induced and the canal was sealed with MTA. Successful regenerative endodontic treatment of necrotic immature permanent teeth can provide continued root development, increased thickness in the dentinal walls and apical closure. These developments of a functional pulp-dentin complex have a promising impact on retaining the natural teeth, the goal of the dental health care.
