  • This experiment was undertaken to investigate ana to compare the effect of vitamin E and selenium on the lipid composition in serum and liver of rats. Net weight gain and food efficiency ratio were elevated by supplementation with selenium and/or vitamin E. The weight of kidney, heart and lung were not affected by the diets. However, liver weight was slightly decreased by supplementation with vitamin E and/or selenium and spleen weight was significantly decreased only by vitamin I supplementation. No differences in serum level of total lipid were found in all groups. Serum cholesterol level was significantly decreased, but the levels of triglyceride and free fatty acid in serum were increased by vitamin E supplementation. Contents of crude lipid, cholesterol, free fatty acid, and triglyceride in liver were significantly decreased by supplementation with vitamin E and/or selenium. In fatty aicd composition of liver, the percentage of linoleic acid(18:2) was the lowest in the selenium-Supplemented group and the significantly lower percentage of arachidonic acid(20:4) was found in the vitamin E and/or selenium-supplemented group in comparision to the deficient basal group.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different organic treatments and a chemical fertilizer on the soil chemical, physical, and microbial properties in an organic pear orchard. METHODS AND RESULTS: Control was referred as a NPK chemical fertilizer (15N-9P-10K) and organic treatments included compost containing with oil cake, compost containing with humic acid, and compost containing with chitin substance. All treatments applied at rates equivalent to 200 g N per tree per year under the tree canopy in March 30 of 2008 and 2009. Soil bulk density, solid phase, liquid phase, and penetration resistance were not significantly different among the treatments. Organic treatment plots had greater organic matter, total nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium concentrations compared to control, and the nutrient concentrations were not consistently affected by the organic treatments. Microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon, dehydrogenase, acid-phosphatase, and chitinase activities overall increased from March to August. Organic treatments, especially compost containing with oil cake or chitin aicd, increased the microbial variables compared to control. CONCLUSION(s): All the organic treatments consistently stimulated soil biological activity. The consistent treatment effect, however, did not occur on the soil mineral nutrition as the trees actively taken up the nutrients during a growing season, which would have diminished treatment effects. Long-term study required for evaluating soil physical properties in a pear orchard.

  • After investigating the developmental process of galls forming on leaf of Zelkova serrata and analyzing the composition and contents of the free amino acids in leaves, galls and haemolymph of aphids, we have come to the following results. Galls induced were mostly distributed on the middle of lower part of leaf to the petiole along vein and most of investigated leaves had one gall only. The growth of galls continued in length and width until Paracolopha morrisoni habitants which transformed into alate adult left the gall. These results also indicate that galls are closely connected with a portion of plant tissues as well as foods and habitats of aphids. 26${\sim}$29 kinds of free amino acids such as proline, alanine and valine and so on, detected in leaves, gall and haemolymph of aphids. The composition of free amino acids were similar in three materials examined, but proline and asparatic acid showed the highest quantity in the leaves and falls, respectively. In case of aphids, alanine was extremely higher as 18.4% of total contents of free amino acids, in 1st instar of fundatrix stage. Total contents of free amino acids in the apteral adult stage of aphid were also increased than in the 1st instar stage. This investigation implies that nitrogen source such as free amino acids is apparently a major growth-material like carbohydrates during development of galls in Zelkova serrata.

  • Lipids, extracted with chloroform-methanol (2:1 by vol.) and purified, from nut and leaf of Ginkgo biloba were identified and quantitatived by column, thin layer and gas liquid chromatography. The results were summarized as follow: 1) The total content of purified lipids in the nut and leaf on the fresh weight basis were 1.32% and 2.24%, respectively. 2) The lipid fractions in the nut obtained by silicic acid colum chromatography were found to be composed of about 89% neutral lipids and about 10% compound lipids, and in the leaf were found to be composed of about 28% neutral lipids and about 72% compound lipids. 3) Among the neutral lipid fractions, triglycerides (86.2%) were the major component in the nut, but esterified sterols (53.3%) were the major component in the leaf. 4) The main fatty acids of the total lipids were oleic(37.5%) and linoleic acid(44.5%) in the nut, but linolenic(45.2%) and palmitic acid (25.1%) were main fatty acids in the leaf. The patterns of fatty acid composition of the neutral lipid fractions in the nut and leaf were found to be similar, and oleic, linoleic and palmitic acid were the predominant. A large amount of oleic and linoleic acid in the glycolipid fractions was found in the nut compared with those in the leaf, but linolenic acid content in the leaf was significantly higher than in the nut. And patterns of fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fractions in the nut and leaf were found to be similar to that of glycolipid fractions.

  • This study was performed to investigate the whitening effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus in addition to its antioxidative activities. The cytotoxicity of the Lactobacillus rhamnosus was 7.6% at 10.0% (v/v) concentration. Its cytotoxicity was lower than 3.2% of Lactobacillus casei when adding the same concentration. Lactobacillus rhamnosus exhibited high antioxidative activities at 14.9% of DPPH radical scavenging activity, and a lower reducing power was measured. Lactobacillus casei exhibited relatively lower antioxidative activities at 13.4%. The tyrosinase inhibition activity of Lactobacillus rhamnosus was observed at 31.3% when adding 10.0% (v/v), as compared to 17.7% for Lactobacillus casei. Lactobacillus rhamnosus demonstrated strong inhibition activity for melanin synthesis at 58.6% when adding 10.0% (v/v), while Lactobacillus casei increased to 80.6%. It was also observed that the high antioxidative activities of Lactobacillus rhamnosus were strongly correlated to whitening activities, due to the inhibition of both tyrosinase and melanin synthesis. These results support the expanded use of lactic acid bacteria as a functional bioresources in the cosmetics industry.

  • In CLO2 delignification and bleaching process, formation of chlorate corresponds to a loss of 20-36% of the original CKO2 charge. Because chlorate is inactive and harmful to environmental, it will be of benefit to find methods that can reduce the formation of chlorate during chlorine dioxide bleaching. Chlorate is mainly formed by the reaction HCIO +ClO2 $\longrightarrow$H+ + Cl_ +ClO3-2 On the other hand, AOX in chlorine dioxide bleacing is formed also due to the in-situ produced hypochlorous acid. THus both AOX and chlorate could be reduced by addition of hypochlorous acid. Some paper son the reduction of AOX by additives appeared , but systematic data on chlorate reduction as well as pulp and effluent properties are not available. THus this paper of focused on the effects on the reduction of chlorate and chlorine dioxide bleachability. The additives, fulfamic a챵, AMSO, hydrogen peroxide, oxalic acid were found to eliminate chlorine selectively in chlorine and chlorine dioxide mixture. However, when they were added to bleaching process, sulfamic acid and DMSO showed significant reduction of chlorate formation but hydrogen peroxide and oxalic aicd did not, and significant amount ofhydrogen peroxide was found resided in the bleaching effluent , In addition, sulfamic acid and DMSO decreased the bleaching end ph values while hydrogen peroxide and oxalic acid did not, which also indicated that hydrogen peroxide and oxalic acid were ineffective. The difference might be ascribed to the competitives of hypochlorous acid with lignin, chlorite (CKO2) and additives. Sulfamic acid and DMSO showed better pulpbrightness development but less alkaline extraction efficiency than hydrogen peroxide , oxalic acid and control, which means that insitu hypochlorous acid contributes to the formation of new chromophore structures that can be easily eliminated by alkaline extraction. DMSO decreased the delignification ability of chlorine dioxide due to the elimination of hypochlorous acid, but sfulfamic acid did to because the chlroinated sulfamic acid had stable bleachability. In addition, sulfamic acid, and SMSO shwed decreased color and COD of bleaching effluents, hydrogen peroxide decreased effluent color but not COD content, and oxalic acid had no statistically significant effects. No significant decreases of pulp viocosity were found except for hydrogen peroxide. Based on our results , we suggest that the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide on the reduction of AOX in literature might be explained by other mechanisms not due to the elimination of hypochlorous acid , but to the direct decomposition of AOX by hydrogen peroxide.

  • This study was investigated on antioxidant activities of water, methanol and ether extracts of clove. The extraction yields of water, methanol and ether extracts were 34.7, 21.4 and 17.0%, respectively. Total phenolic contents of water, methanol and ether extracts were 23.1, 55.7 and 34.9%, respectively. Eugenol contents were 6.1 and 8.1% in methanol and ether extracts, but it was not detected in water extract. Electron donating abilities of water, methanol and ether extract were 36.1, 30.9 and 29.7%, respectively. In linoleic aicd system, the ether extract showed more high antioxidant activity than water and methanol extracts. The antioxidant activity of ether extract was almost equal that of $\alpha$-tocopherol, but weaker than that of BHT In linoleic acid emulsion system, the water extract showed higher or stronger antioxidant activity than methanol and ether extracts. Antioxidant activities in linoleic acid emulsion substrates were in order of BHT >water extract>methanol extract>ether extract> $\alpha$-tocopherol.

  • The fatty acid composition of lipids separated from 14 kinds of canned fish and shellfish products from the market were examined. The crude lipid contents of canned fish and shellfish products showed wide difference (1.3-15.2%) depending on raw materials and kinds of products. Fatty acid composition of products were mainly consisted of polyenoic acid(34.5-61.4%), and followed by saturated acid(24.5-47.8%), monoenoic acid(12.4-32.0%). The major fatty acids were palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid oleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. In case of canned tuna in oil and canned smoked oyster in oil, linoleic acid was the most predominant component(48.2%, 34.6%). Judging from the results, canned fish and shellfish products were abundant of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in spite of the high temperature sterilization and lone storage periods.

  • This study was to investigate the chemical compositions of germinated (GSS)- and ungerminated (UGSS)-safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) seeds. GSS had higher amount of sugar and crude fiber than UGSS, but less amounts of protein and lipid. Levels of $\alpha$-tocopherol and essential amino acids of GSS were higher than those of UGSS, although there are no difference in fatty acid composition between GSS and UGSS. Among the nine phenolic compounds detected, five phenolic compounds, except for two lignans and two flavonoids, were found in both GSS and UGSS. Four serotonin derivatives accounted for about 80 per cent of total phenolic compounds, and levels of five phenolic compounds decreased slightly with germination. These results suggest that germination may enhance the functionality of safflower seed by increasing nutritional compositions and by decreasing phenolic compounds with bitter taste and cathartic effects.
