The Effect of Academic Stress on the Intention to Use e-Learning: Focused on the Moderating Effect of the Attractiveness of Alternatives (학업스트레스가 이러닝 이용의도에 미치는 영향: 대안의 매력도 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between academic stress and e-learning intentions of university students, and to determine the moderating effect on the attractiveness of alternatives. Data collection was conducted from 18 May to 22 May 2020 using 317 questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using SmartPLS. As a result of the study, among the academic stresses of university students, stress due to class, grades, and interpersonal relationships has a relationship with the intention to use e-learning. However, the test stress did not have a significant effect on the intention to use e-learning, and the modulating effect on the attractiveness of the alternative was also not significant. This study suggests that various and attractive e-learning can be provided within the university by highlighting the importance of healthy university life and e-learning for university students.

A longitudinal study of the stress factors of parents between psychological maladjustment and the risk of school interruption in multicultural adolescents: The Application of Autoregressive Cross-lagged Model (부모의 스트레스와 다문화청소년의 심리적 부적응, 학업중단위험 간 종단적 인과관계: 자기회귀교차지연모형 적용)

  • In this study, the Korea Youth Policy Institute applied a self-registering model to verify the patterns of parental stress, multicultural youth psychological maladjustment, and interdependence between three factors by using five-point-time data tracked from middle school to high school. According to the analysis, First, Parent' stress at the time of the five surveys had a significant positive effect on the psychological maladjustment and the risk of academic interruption of multicultural adolescents at that point. Second, the psychological maladaptation of multicultural adolescents at the time of the previous five surveys had a significant positive effect on the risk of academic interruption at that point. Based on these analysis results, various support measures were proposed to cope with the stress of multicultural youth parents, and policy alternatives were proposed to prevent the risk of academic interruption by reducing the psychological maladjustment of multicultural youth.

The relationship between physical·mental health and life stress in dental hygiene freshman (치위생과 신입생의 신체·정신건강과 대학 생활 스트레스와의 관계)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial stress and depression symptoms in dental hygiene freshman. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire of 45 questions was filled out by 207 dental hygiene students in Gyeongnam from December 9 to 11, 2013. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Results : Religion tended to influence on positive effects on academic stress because those having religion had less academic stress. Economic condition also influenced on physical and mental stress in the students($8.52{\pm}5.63$)(p=0.000). Low economic status influenced on academic problems(p=0.022), family problems(p=0.014), rational relationship problems(p=0.002), and interpersonal problems(p=0.007). There was no significant difference between future problems(p=0.125) and self-efficacy(p=0.076). The physical symptoms included digestive disorders($16.73{\pm}5.37$), cardiac symptoms($14.61{\pm}5.51$), headache($9.46{\pm}3.59$), insomnia($8.32{\pm}3.67$) (p=0.000). The mental symptoms included negative emotions($15.07{\pm}3.94$)(p=0.000). Conclusions : In order to reduce the psychosocial stress symptoms in dental hygiene freshman, it is important to develop the stress debriefing program in the future.

Effects of Depression and Daily Stress on Female High School Students's Resourcefulness (여고생의 우울과 일상적 스트레스가 자원동원성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate depression, daily stress and resourcefulness in female high school students and to identify variables influencing resourcefulness. Data were collected 152 female high school students. Data were treated statistics using ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Scheffe's test and Stepwise Regression Analysis. The mean score of depression was 7.29±8.38. There was statistically significant difference in depression on factors such as relationship with parental rearing attitudes, school fellow, satisfaction of school life. The mean score of daily stress was 105.88±19.63. There were statistically significant difference in daily stress on variables such as relationship with school fellow, parental rearing attitudes. The mean score of resourcefulness was 21.68±33.50. There was statistically significant difference in resourcefulness on factors such as academic achievement, satisfaction of school life. Resourcefulness was negatively correlated with depression and daily stress. Depression was positively correlated with daily stress. Factor influencing resourcefulness were daily stress, academic achievement, which explained 35.7%. Further researches with careful sampling will be needed to reinforce the resourcefulness of high school students.

Relationship among Stress, Coping Strategies, and Self-esteem in Nursing Students Taking Clinical Experience (간호대학생들의 임상실습 스트레스, 대처방식 및 자아존중감과의 관계)

  • The study to identify the relationship among stress associated with clinical experience, coping strategies and self-esteem in nursing students and to provide basic information which is useful for nursing students' learning experience in clinical setting were surveyed using self-reported questionnaires. The findings were summarized : 1. Senior students showed a higher level of stress than junior students. A higher stress level was observed in the unsatisfied group, compared with the neutral group. By class and clinical schedule, students who followed the 3-week class and 3-week clinical schedule showed a higher level of stress than those who followed the 8-week class and 8-week clinical schedule. 2. Senior students had a higher mean coping strategy score than junior students. And the satisfied group showed higher self-esteem, compared with the neutral and unsatisfied group. 3. There was a positive correlation between stress associated with clinical learning experience and coping strategies. But a negative correlation was seen between stress and self-esteem in nursing students. 4. Nursing students used more coping mechanisms as their stress levels increased but showed low self-esteem. The results suggest the need for developing more effective teaching methods and strategies that could improve students' ability to solve problems and sustain their self-esteem even under a stressful circumstance.

The Relationship of Communication Competence, Professional Self-Concept and Stress in Clinical Practice of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 의사소통 능력, 간호전문직 자아개념과 임상실습 스트레스와의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationships among communication competence, professional self-concept, and stress in clinical practice of nursing students. Methods: The study participants were 308 senior year nursing students in D city and K province. Collected data were analyzed using t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS Version 20.0. Results: There were significant differences in participants' stress of clinical practice based on their level of satisfaction on clinical practice, self-confidence of nursing and difficulty with relationships in clinical practice. A negative correlation was detected between stress in clinical practice and the professional self-concept of nursing students. Significant predictors of the perceived stress of clinical practice were satisfaction in clinical practice and pride in nursing. These accounted for 18% of the perceived stress of clinical practice in a regression model. Conclusion: The results may serve as basic data in support of the need to the develop effective systematic stress management programs and clinical training courses in order to attenuate the stress experienced during clinical practice of nursing students.

Analysis of Middle School Students' Stress and Related Variables (청소년 스트레스에 대한 관련 변인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of middle school students' stress in relation to certain variables, those of grade, gender, academic achievement, coping behavior and self-concept. The subjects were 574 students selected from 4 middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments included a stress index, coping behavior questionnaire and self-concept inventory. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA (Scheff test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school students' stress was influenced significantly by the grade, gender and achievement in school. Also, coping behavior and self-concept were influenced significantly by the grade, gender, and achievement in school. Correlation analysis indicated that student's stress and certain coping behavior were postively correlated, especially avoidance coping behavior indicated a higher correlation to students' stress than active coping behavior. The relationship between stress and self-concept indicated a negative high correlation. It was also found that avoidance coping behavior, family self-concept, general self-concept, school and class self-concept, grade and academic achievement were significant predictors of middle school students' stress.

Clinical Practice Stress and Burnout in Nursing Students: The Mediating Effect of Empathy (간호대학생의 임상실습스트레스와 소진과의 관계에서 공감의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationships between clinical practice stress and burnout, and the mediating role of empathy in nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional research design was employed. One hundred seventeen nursing students completed questionnaires on clinical practice stress, empathy (perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress) and burnout in December 2017. IBM SPSS Statistics 23 was used and descriptive statistics, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression were conducted. Baron & Kenny method and Sobel test were adopted for analysis of the mediation effect (personal distress of empathy). Results: The mean scores of clinical practice stress and burnout were 3.45 and 43.09, and perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress of empathy were 2.67, 2.42, 2.64 and 2.19, respectively. The highest relationship between clinical practice stress and empathy was personal distress of empathy (r=.32, p<.001). Burnout was positively associated with clinical practice stress and personal distress of empathy (r=.22, p=.015; r=.51, p<.001). Personal distress of empathy demonstrated a complete mediating effect on the relationship between clinical practice stress and burnout (Z=3.22, p=.001). Conclusion: These results showed that decreasing personal distress of empathy is important for nursing students, and may help in reducing clinical practice stress and burnout.

The Mediating Effect of Humor on the Relationship between Perceived Stress and Depression in College Students (대학생의 지각된 스트레스와 우울의 관계에서 유머의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: This study examines the relationships among perceived stress, humor style, responding humor and depression among college students and the mediating effect of humor between perceived stress and depression. Method: During the period May 6-16, 2013, a convenience sample of 200 subjects was obtained from college K in city G. Data analysis was performed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and regression analysis. Results: The average BDI score was 7.7. There were 40 (20.0%), 16 (8.0%), 8 (4.0%), and 11 (9.0%) students with mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. The group with depressive symptoms constituted 3.5% of students. There was a significant positive correlation between negative stress perception and depression. Conversely, there was a significant negative correlation between adaptive humor style and negative stress perception. Ultimately, there were significant negative correlations between positive stress perception, adaptive humor style, maladaptive humor style, responding humor and depression. To test the mediating effect of adaptive humor style in the relationship between negative stress perception and depression, a Sobel test was performed and Z-score of 1.7736 (p=.076) obtained. Conclusion: Though the mediating effect of an adaptive humor style on the relationship between perceived stress and depression was not significant, considering the negative correlation with depression, strategies to increase an adaptive humor style and responding humor is recommended to prevent depression in college students.

Effects of a Stress Management Program on Perceived Stress, Depression and Somatic Symptom in the Elderly (스트레스 관리 프로그램이 노인의 지각된 스트레스, 우울 및 신체화 증상에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the effects of stress management program on perceived stress, geriatric depression, and somatic symptom in elderly Korean subjects. Methods: A pre-post test design with a nonequivalent control group was used. Fifty elderly Korean subjects with mild depression were recruited from the registerants at four public senior citizen centers within S-gu in Seoul. They were randomly allotted to the experimental group(n=25) and control group(n=25). The intervention was performed for one hour each week at each center for 5 weeks. The effects were measured by Perceived Stress Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean, and Patient Health Questionnaire-15. Results: Perceived stress and depression were significantly reduced in experimental group. The somatic symptom was not significantly different in the experimental group. Conclusion: The stress management program may have merit in improving mental health of elderly Koreans, although this conclusion is equivocal pending further well-controlled studies that include mediation techniques such as conversion therapy and health gymnastics.
