AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$ superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. In the cables, the tapes have different critical currents intrinsically. And they are electrically connected to each other and current leads. These make loss measurements considerably complex, especially for short samples of laboratory size. So special cautions are required in the positioning of voltage leads for measuring the true loss voltage. In this work we have prepared a conductor composed of three Bi-2223 tapes with different critical currents. The ac loss characteristics in the conductor have experimentally investigated. The loss tests indicate that the ac loss is dependent on arrangements of voltage leads but not on their contact positions. The measured losses in the conductor also agree well with the sum of the transport losses measured in each Bi-2223 tape.e.

Superconductor is weak in AC condition. Bifilar geometry provides a solution to reduce AC loss. Bifialr geometry is piled up or wound with more than two layers. When a layer of superconductor abuts on other layers, AC loss is affected by not only self-field, but also magnetic field induced by adjacent layers. In this study, two superconductors are piled up as a series connection so that current flows in different directions. By this method, magnetic field is cancelled. If magnetic field is cancelled, AC loss is reduced. To compare AC loss with respect to piling method, we measured the AC loss difference between the case facing each other with substrate side and the case facing with YBCO side. Measured AC loss is compared with one-way current flow single layer AC loss. In addition, we analyzed how much AC loss was increased, or reduced. All results were compared with those calculated with Norris equation. By this experiment, we concluded that distance between two wires is the important cause of AC loss. The distance between two wires affects magnetic field reduction in YBCO and induced current flow on substrate side.
Strands composing multistage superconducting cables for AC power applications have twisted structure in each stage for lower AC loss and higher stability. So, when transport currents flow in a cable, each strand is exposed to longitudinal and azimuthal magnetic fields produced by transport current flowing in strand itself and Iongitudinal and transverse magnetic fields by transport current flowing in twisted cable. In this paper. we study the influence on self field lesses generated in second stage superconducting cable for different twist direction of filaments in a strand considering twist of strands in cables.
AC losses in multifilamentary HTS tapes can be classified to hysteresis loss, coupling loss, and eddy current loss from the viewpoint of their generation mechanism. From the viewpoint of the major magnetic field component generating them, they can be classified to magnetization loss, transport loss, and total loss. Dividing superconductor to fine filaments, twisting filaments bundle and increasing transverse resistivity are effectively reduce magnetization loss and total loss when the external magnetic field is relatively large. Recently, twisted multifilamentary Bi 2223 tapes with pure silver matrix were fabricated and the reduction of magnetization loss was proved experimentally in the parallel magnetic field to the tape wide face. However, when the perpendicular magnetic field is applied, increasing transverse resistivity is required essentially to reduce the AC losses. The transverse resistivity was increased successfully by the introduction of resistive barrier between filaments.
YBCO wire has a metal substrate to improve the texture structure and highly conductive layers to increase the cryogenic stability. When AC current flows in the YBCO wire, magnetic field which is generated by the AC current magnetizes the metal substrate and induces the eddy current in the stabilizing layer. To examine the effect of the metal substrate and the conducting layer on the transport current loss of YBCO wire, this paper presents the transport current loss of YBCO wire which has metal substrate and conductive layer. YBCO wire with Ni-W substrate and copper layer were chosen as the model HTS wire for numerical calculation. Finite element method has been used to calculate the transport loss and the results of numerical calculation was compared with analytic calculation suggested by Norris.
AMR (Active Magnetic Regenerative) refrigerators require the large variation of the magnetic field and a HTS magnet can be used. The amount of AC loss is very important considering the overall efficiency of the AMR refrigerator. However, it is very hard to estimate the precise loss of the HTS magnet because the magnetic field distribution around the conductor itself depends on the coil configuration and the neighboring HTS wires interact each other through the distorted magnetic field by the screening current Therefore, the AC loss of HTS magnet should be calculated using the whole configuration of the HTS magnet with superconducting characteristic. This paper describes the AC loss of the HTS magnet by an appropriate FEM approach, which uses the non-linear characteristic of HTS conductor. The analysis model is based on the 2-D FEM model, called as 'magnetic field formulation and edge-element model', for whole coil configuration in cylindrical coordinates. The effects of transport current and stacked conductors on the AC loss are investigated considering the field-dependent critical current. The PDE model of 'Comsol multiphysics' is used for the FEM analysis with properly implemented equations for axisymmetric model.
AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$, superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a cylindrical former. In this paper, the ac loss characteristics in the 3-conductor have investigated experimentally. The loss test results indicate that the ac loss is not related to the arrangement of Bi-2223 tapes, contact position and applied frequency. The measured losses in face-to-face arrangement are larger than those in edge-to-edge arrangement. The measured losses in the 3-conductor also agree well with the sum of the transport losses measured in each Bi-2223 tape.e.
In this paper, we described the procedures of AC transport current loss in HTS tape. To carry out the calculation, A-$\Phi$ formulation was introduced and two dimensional FEM was used for computation. The results were showed that ellipse shape was higher loss compared to rectangle one and these were almost same behavior of analytical results predicted by Norris. A comparative analysis of loss for various n-value variation was also presented.
AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$\sub$c/ superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. The critical current and AC loss characteristics in the conductor have experimentally investigated. The results show that for uniform current distributions the conductor's critical current is proportional to the critical current of the Bi-2223 tape to which a voltage lead is attached. However it depends on the current non-uniformity parameter in the conductor rather than the tape's critical currents for nonuniform current distributions. The loss tests indicate that the AC loss is dependent on arrangements of voltage leads but not on their contact positions. The measured losses in the conductor also agree well with the sum of the transport losses measured in each Bi-2223 tape.
