Hijikia fusiforme (HF), a member of brown algae family, exerts various pharmacological effects, including preventing arteriosclerosis and menopausal disorders. This study aimed to elucidate the ameliorative effect of HF on skin inflammation. We investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of HF extract to evaluate its potential as a functional materials. The antioxidant activity of HF was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) scavenging and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) scavenging. To determine the pharmacological mechanism of HF in inflammatory reaction, we evaluated the effects of HF on interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α production and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation in activated- human mast cells (HMC)-1. Results showed that HF had the high DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity, and it suppressed IL-8, IL-6 and TNF-α production in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, HF significantly ameliorated NF-kB activation in activated-HMC-1. Hence, these results provide evidence that HF's potential for skin inflammation therapy.
This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and anti-obesity activity of ethanol extracts from fermented Arctium lappa L. Arctium lappa fermented twice with Phellinus linteus ($2^{nd}$ FA) showed more DPPH radical scavenging activity than non-fermented Arctium lappa (NFA), and Arctium lappa fermented once ($1^{st}$ FA) at a concentration of 62.5 ppm. The $2^{nd}$ FA showed the highest level of ABTS radical scavenging activity at concentration range of 31.5~125 ppm. The ABTS free radical scavenging activities of $1^{st}$ FA and $2^{nd}$ FA were similar to that of BHA, a synthetic antioxidant, at a concentration of 250 ppm. The total polyphenol content of $2^{nd}$ FA was higher than those of NFA and $1^{st}$ FA. The flavonoid content was significantly increased in $1^{st}$ FA and $2^{nd}$ FA than NFA. During adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells was significantly decreased in the order of NFA, $1^{st}$ FA, and $2^{nd}$ FA at all concentrations. In conclusion, the antioxidant and anti-obesity activities of A. lappa were increased depending on the degree of fermentation. It is suggested that fermented Arctium lappa, especially $2^{nd}$ FA, could be used as a natural ingredient for functional foods and medicine.

Resuits : The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in natural plants was highest in Panax Ginseng Sprout Extract at 100℃, which also demonstrated high DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity. MTT assay demonstrated that the Panax Ginseng Sprout Ferment Extract did not have a cytotoxic effect in CCD-986SK cell. Also, Panax Ginseng Sprout Ferment Extract was found to inhibit MMP-1 expression by 51.85±6.09% at a concentration of 10%. Conclusions : Therefore, this study has confirmed a possibility of Panax ginseng sprout ferment extract as a cosmetic ingredient with MMP-1-inhibitory effects.
Total phenol, flavonoid and antioxidant components of cabbage leaf samples derived from different cultivar were determined. Total phenol compound content showed the highest amount in methanol extracts from ‘YR Howol’ cultivar (11.72 ㎎/g), followed by ‘Harutame’ (10.66㎎/g), ‘Winstar’ (10.34 ㎎/g) and YR Hero (10.20 ㎎/g). The highest amount of total flavonoid content was observed from the methanol extracts of Harutame (5.39 ㎎/g), followed by Winstar (4.28 ㎎/g), Wialhowol (4.10 ㎎/g). The SOD enzyme activity showed a high activity of ‘YR Hogeo’ cultivar, and the cultivar of ‘YR Howol’ cultivar showed the lowest activity of SOD. The activity of CAT and APX showed higher values ‘Ogane’ and ‘YR Hogeol’ cultivars than the other cultivars. The POD activities showed relatively high values ‘Ogane’ and ‘YR Howol’ cultivars compared with other cultivars. The free radical (DPPH) scavenging activity showed lower IC50 values of ‘Harutame’ (15.71) and ‘YR Howol’ cultivar (16.88), however methanol extract of ‘YR Hero’ cultivar (22.49) being the highest. The extracts of all cabbage cultivars in the reaction solution of pH 1.2 could be decomposed nitrite more than 50%. Especially, the cultivar ‘YR Hogeol’ and ‘Ogane’ showed a relatively high nitrite scavenging activity for each 60.13% and 57.20% respectively. The IC50 values of antioxidant activity determined by ABTS were lower in ‘Harutame’ (17.04) and ‘YR Howol’ cultivar (17.97), and its results observed similar with values obtained from the same extracts by DPPH method. The result of this study suggests that the methanol extract of Brassica oleracea L. contains the high amount of phenolic and higher radical scavenging activities.

The aim of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of herbal medicine extract granules for the comparison of commercial powder products such as adlay tea powder and roasted grain powder. The antioxidant activities of samples were estimated using reducing power, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging activities, and total polyphenolic contents. Herbal extract granules contained $126.44{\pm}7.26mg/100g$ of total polyphenolic contents. Interestingly, the highest antioxidant activity was found in 5.5% herbal extract granules, which showed DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities of 71.82% and 85.28%, respectively, at 100 mg/mL and reducing power of O.D 1.25. These results suggested that addition of herbal medicine extract had beneficial effects on the functionality of granules without any affecting on its sensory characteristics.
This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of Camellia japonica extracts for cosmetic applications. Antimicrobial effects of C. japonica were determined against Bacillus cereus by methanol extract of new leaf, stem and stem-leaf; Malassezia pachydermatis, by methanol extract of new leaf and stem-leaf. A methanol extract of new leaf of C. japonica showed strong antimicrobial effect using paper disc method against most species especially in Staphylococcus aureus. Antioxidative activities of C. japonica seed oils were determined by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. The value of $EC_{50}$ of DPPH scavenging activity was 500 mg/mL and that of ABTS scavenging activity was 96.10 mg/mL. C. japonica oil extracts showed lower antioxidative activities than those of gallic acid and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Electron microscopic observation of damaged virgin hairs of different ages gave a stabilizing effects after C. japonica seed oil treatment. These results indicated that the extracts of stem, leaf and seed of C. japonica could be used as cosmetic ingredient combined with appropriate formula.

The effects of treatment with various complex carbohydrases such as Pectinex, Celluclast, Viscozyme, and Ultraflo on the physiochemical properties, polyphenol extraction yields and antioxidant activities of pear peel and pear core were investigated. When pear peel and pear core were treated with complex carbohydrases, the soluble solid content of peel increased, whereas it did not change significantly in the case of pear core. When pear peel and pear core were treated with Pectinex, significant improvement of soluble solid content was observed along with the highest extraction yield of reducing sugar content. Total sugar content increased in most of the enzyme treatment groups. In the case of pear peel, the Viscozyme treatment group showed the highest total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and SOD-like activity. When the flesh and core of pear were treated with Celluclast, total polyphenol contents increased. All enzyme treatment groups except for the Ultraflo treatment group showed increases in total flavonoid contents. With regard to pear flesh, the Celluclast group showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity. When pear core was treated with the four complex carbohydrases, DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity did not increase significantly. However, the SOD-like activity of all enzyme treatment groups significantly increased. Consequently, dry matter and soluble solid contents, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activity of pear peel and core could be improved by complex carbohydrase treatment.
The aim of this work was to select suitable fermentation treatments for the efficient bioconversion of cactus (Opuntia humifusa Raf.) bioactive components with an improved radical scavenging activity for use as a nutraceutical. To obtain microorganisms for the microbial conversion of cactus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC8294, Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3099, Lactobacillus plantarum KERI 236 and Monascus pilosus KCCM 60029 (ATCC 22080) were used for fermentation. Fermentation by Lac. plantarum KCTC 3099 was the most effective at scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals and reducing iron (III). In particular, uronic acid levels showed a remarkable increase in fermentation. The polyphenol and quercetin content of the fermented cactus showed large increases from $108.65{\mu}g/mL$ and $2.71{\mu}g/mL$ to $227.83{\mu}g/mL$ and $9.73{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, showing a maximum level at 36 h of fermentation with Lac. plantarum KCTC 3099. Thus, cactus fermentation with Lac. plantarum is an useful process for the enhancement of antioxidant contents and activity of fresh cactus.
The antioxidative activities of beverages with water or ethanol extracts from Maegmundong (Liriope platyphylla) were investigated with free amino acid and mineral analysis, as well as saponin, total phenolics and flavonoid determination. Antioxidative activity was evaluated by electron donating ability and ABTS radical scavenging activity. There was only a small difference between water extract beverages and ethanol-extract beverages with respect to their electron donating ability and ABTS radical scavenging activity, although the total saponin, total phenolics and flavonoid were found to be greater in the ethanol extract beverages than in the water extract beverages. Three major free amino acids of the Magemundong beverages with water- or ethanol extract were asparagine (58.30, 60.68 mg%), methionine (15.10, 13.95 mg%, respectively) and proline (12.31, 14.00 mg%, respectively). The most abundant mineral in the Maegmundong beverage with water and ethanol extract was potassium (238.68, 244.32 mg%, respectively).
The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activities (FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH), and antibacterial properties of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) extracts. Lotus leaves, stems, and seed pods were extracted with deionized water at $95^{\circ}C$, and with 70.5% ethanol at $85^{\circ}C$. The TPC ranged from 8.12 to 215.12 GAE mg/g. The ethanol extract of the seed pod had the highest TPC, and the TPC of the corresponding deionized water extract was 161.45 mg/g. FRAP values ranged from 104.03 to $3,546.39TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$, ABTS radical cation scavenging activities ranged from 105.11 to $3,956.94TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$, and DPPH radical scavenging activities ranged from 37.29 to $2,549.46TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$. $EC_{50}$ values ranged from 0.26 to 9.63 mg/mL, and 0.31 to 21.21 mg/mL for ABTS and DPPH, respectively. The ethanol and deionized water extracts of the seed pod showed higher TPC and stronger antioxidant properties (FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH) than those of characteristic of the leaf extracts. The ethanol and deionized water extracts of the seed pod showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with inhibition zones of 9.0 to 14.0 mm, and the ethanol extract of the leaf showed antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis and S. aureus with inhibition zones of 9.0 and 10.0 mm, respectively. Thus, the lotus seed pod could be used to produce novel teas, and could be a potential source of therapeutic ingredients for food and medicine.
