  • In ad-hoc network, the technique to efficiently consume the limited amounts of energy is an important issue since the wireless terminal node is operated on batteries as their energy resource. In order to extend the system lifetime, through a balanced energy consumption, we must delay the situation in which a particular terminal node's energy is depleted and results in system disconnection. Also, the link, which has low reliability due to the mobility of the node, should be avoided considering the key element when setting up the route. The proposed CMLR method in this paper enables to increase the efficiency of energy consumption with a new cost function considering the residue energy of node, error rate of link, and transmission energy consumption. This method is extending the network lifetime and increasing the energy efficiency by compromising the value between the minimization of the transmission energy consumption and maximization of the node's lifetime. Through the simulations the proposed CMLR algorithm was verified by showing better performance over the conventional methods in terms of network lifetime and path efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified optical CBC(Cipher Block Chaining) encryption method using optical XOR logic operations. The proposed method is optically implemented by using dual encoding and a free-space interconnected optical logic gate technique in order to process XOR operations in parallel. Also, we suggest a CBC encryption/decryption optical module which can be fabricated with simple optical architecture. The proposed method makes it possible to encrypt and decrypt vast two-dimensional data very quickly due to the fast optical parallel processing property, and provides more security strength than the conventional electronic CBC algorithm because of the longer security key with the two-dimensional array. Computer simulations show that the proposed method is very effective in CBC encryption processing and can be applied to even ECB(Electronic Code Book) mode and CFB(Cipher Feedback Block) mode.

  • Tropical forests play a key role for functioning of the planet and maintenance of life. These forests support more than half of the world's species, serve as regulators of global and regional climate, act as carbon sinks and provide valuable ecosystem services. Forest floor biomass and litterfall dynamics was measured in different sites influenced by fire in a seasonally dry tropical forest of Bhoramdeo wildlife sanctuary of Chhattisgarh, India. The forest floor biomass was collected randomly placed quadrats while the litterfall measured by placing stone-block lined denuded quadrat technique. The seasonal mean total forest floor biomass across the fire regimes varied from $2.00-3.65t\;ha^{-1}$. The total litterfall of the study sites varied from $4.75-7.56t\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$. Annual turnover of litter varied from 70-74% and the turnover time between 1.35-1.43 years. Monthly pattern of forest floor biomass indicated that partially decayed litter, wood litter and total forest floor were differed significantly. The seasonal variation showed that leaf fall differed significantly in winter season only among the fire regimes while the wood litter was found non significant in all the season. This study shows that significant variation among the site due to the forest fire. Decomposition is one of the ecological processes critical to the functioning of forest ecosystems. The decomposing wood serves as a saving account of nutrients and organic materials in the forest floor. Across the site, high fire zone was facing much of the deleterious effects on forest floor biomass and litter production. Control on such type of wildfire and anthropogenic ignition could allow the natural recovery processes to enhance biological diversity. Chronic disturbances do not provide time for ecosystem recovery; it needs to be reduced for ecosystem health and maintaining of the high floral and faunal biodiversity.

  • In this paper, we studied the Similar Ship(SS) concept[1,2] as a method to an experimental and semi-emperical approach for the estimation of hull hydrodynamic forces and hull-propeller-rudder interaction coefficients and used these methods to predict ship's manoeuvrability. The SS concept is adopted to use experimental data of prototype ships for manoeuvrability prediction of a new ship. The SS concept is composed of the key components as follows: existence of experimental data about prototype ship, availability of semi-emperical method for estimating the changes of hull force, a method to correct the prototype ship data. On the basis of these concepts, we attempted to simulate manoeuvrability at ballast and scantling draft conditions by making use of experimental data at full load draft condition and to simulate manoeuvrability of new ships by making use of experimental data for prototype. From present calculation, it was found that the present method can predict the ship's manoeuvrability accurately at early design stage.

  • As the key equipment in deep ocean mining, the slurry pump suffers from wear and blocking problems. In this paper, high-speed photography technique is applied to track the movement rule of single particle of the coarse particle solid-liquid two-phase flow in a double blade slurry pump. The influences of particle diameter and particle density on the pass-through and collision characteristics of particles are analyzed as well. The results show that the average of the passing pump time first decreases and then increases when the particle diameter increases. The average of the passing pump time decreases by 22.7%, when the particle density increases from $1.09g/cm^3$ to $1.75g/cm^3$. Besides, the particle density has great influence on the location where the particle hits the tongue. Most particles of $1.09g/cm^3$ hit the tongue on the left side, while collision location of particles of $1.75g/cm^3$ is mainly on the top and at the right side of the tongue. The research can provide a basis for the optimization design of slurry pump in deep ocean mining system.

  • This study aims at favorable environmental conditions by river otter residing in Hongcheon river ecosystems using spraints along the river. Otter spraints were indicative of habitat use pattern and marking a territory in the areas. Nae-chon and Kuneob-chon river otter spraints were collected totaling 478 with 8 times during 2009-2011, and based on the number river use patterns were analyzed with the technique of index of dispersion. Results with larger than one indicated that river otter habitat use pattern were not random; instead they used preferred areas for habitat use. 'I' values greater than one indicate a clumped distribution and lower than one indicate random distribution. This study also demonstrated that we need a sophiscated linear model that should be developed to identify key habitat elements in river ecosystems.

  • In this paper, we present an anonymous authentication and location assurance protocol for secure location-aware services over vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). In other to achieve our goal, we propose the notion of a location-aware signing key so as to strongly bind geographic location information to cryptographic function while providing conditional privacy preservation which is a desirable property for secure vehicular communications. Furthermore, the proposed protocol provides an efficient procedure based on hash chain technique for revocation checking to effectively alleviate communication and computational costs on vehicles in VANETs. Finally, we demonstrate comprehensive analysis to confirm the fulfillment of the security objectives, and the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed protocol.

  • Purpose: The recent advances in microsurgical techniques and their refinement over the past decade have greatly expanded the indications for digital replantations and have enabled us to salvage severed fingers more often. Many studies have reported greater than 80% viability rates in replantation surgery with functional results. However, replantation of multi-level amputations still remain a challenging problem and the decision of whether or not to replant an amputated part is difficult even for an experienced reconstructive surgeon because the ultimate functional result is unpredictable. Methods: Between January of 2002 and May of 2008, we treated 10 multi-level amputated digits of 7 patients. After brachial plexus block, meticulous replantation procedure was performed under microscopic magnification. Postoperatively, hand elevation, heat lamp, drug therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy were applied with careful observation of digital circulation. Early rehabilitation protocol was performed for functional improvement. Results: Among the 19 amputated segments of 10 digits, 16 segments survived completely without any complications. Overall survival rate was 84%. Complete necrosis of one finger tip segment and partial necrosis of two distal amputated segments developed and subsequent surgical interventions such as groin flap, local advancement flap and skin graft were performed. The overall result was functionally and aesthetically satisfactory. Conclusion: We experienced successful replantations of multi-level amputated digits. When we encounter a multi-level amputation, the key question is whether or not it is a contraindication to replantation. Despite the demand for skillful microsurgical technique and longer operative time, the authors' results prove it is worth attempting replantations in multi-level amputation because of the superiority in aesthetic and functional results.

  • Using variable speed limits (VSL) is a key strategy for preventing traffic accidents and alleviating traffic congestion. This study proposes an algorithm to operate VSLs on freeways for traffic safety. The proposed algorithm consists of two components based on accident likelihood estimation and analysis of safe stopping distance under various environmental conditions. A binary logistic regression technique is used for estimating accident likelihood. It is expected that the proposed algorithm would be successfully applied in practice in support of an integrated traffic and environmental condition monitoring system. Technical issues associated with the field implementation are also discussed.

  • Background subtraction is one of the key techniques for automatic video content analysis, especially in the tasks of visual detection and tracking of moving object. In this paper, we present a new sample-based technique for background extraction that provides background image as well as background model. To handle both high-frequency and low-frequency events at the same time, multiple interval background models are adopted. The main innovation concerns the use of a confidence factor to select the best model from the multiple interval background models. To our knowledge, it is the first time that a confidence factor is used for merging several background models in the field of background extraction. Experimental results revealed that our approach based on multiple interval sampling works well in complicated situations containing various speed moving objects with environmental changes.
