A wireless sensor network (WSN) is designed and implemented for a freeze dryer. Freeze-drying technology is widely used in the fields of pharmacy and biotechnology as well as the food and agriculture industries. Taking into account the demand for high-resolution pressure and temperature measurements in a freeze dryer, the proposed WSN has a significant advantage of creating a monitoring environment in a freeze dryer. The proposed WSN uses a ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 network with an altimeter module that contains a high-resolution pressure and temperature sensor with a serial digital data interface. The ZigBee network is suitable for low-energy and low-data-rate applications in the field of wireless communication. The altimeter module is capable of sensing pressure in the range of 7.5-975 Torr (10-1300 mbar) and temperature in the range of $-40^{\circ}C$ to $125^{\circ}C$ with a DC power consumption of $3{\mu}W$. The implemented WSN is installed in a commercial laboratory freeze dryer in order to demonstrate its functionality and efficiency. A comparison with the temperature profile measured by a thermocouple installed in the freeze dryer reveals that the resolution of the temperature profile measured by WSN is superior to that measured by the thermocouple.
In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the performance of the transmission control protocol (TCP) at the secondary user (SU) severely drops due to the mistrigger of congestion control. A long disruption is caused by the transmission of primary user, leading to the mistrigger. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer approach, called a CR-aware scheme that enhances TCP performance at the SU. The scheme is a sender side addition to the standard TCP (i.e., TCP-NewReno), and utilizes an explicit cross-layer signal delivered from a physical (or link) layer and the signal gives an indication of detecting the primary transmission (i.e., transmission of the primary user). We evaluated our scheme by implementing it onto a software radio platform, the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), where many parts of lower layer operations (i.e., operations in a link or physical layer) run as user processes. In our implementation, we ran our CR-aware scheme over IEEE 802.15.4. Furthermore, for the purpose of comparison, we implemented a selective ACK-based local recovery scheme that helps TCP isolate congestive loss from a random loss in a wireless section.

To achieve accurate localization information, complex algorithms that have high computational complexity are usually implemented. In addition, many of these algorithms have been developed to overcome several limitations, e.g., obstruction interference in multi-path and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. However, localization systems those have complex design experience latency when operating multiple mobile nodes occupying various channels and try to compensate for inaccurate distance values. To operate multiple mobile nodes concurrently, we propose a localization system with both low complexity and high accuracy and that is based on a chirp spread spectrum (CSS) radio. The proposed localization system is composed of accurate ranging values that are analyzed by simple linear regression that utilizes a Big-$O(n^2)$ of only a few data points and an algorithm with a self-calibration feature. The performance of the proposed localization system is verified by means of actual experiments. The results show a mean error of about 1 m and multiple mobile node operation in a $100{\times}35m^2$ environment under NLOS condition.
problem of pedestrian localization using mobile nodes containing impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) is considered. IEEE 802.15.4a-based IR-UWB can achieve accurate ranging. However, the coverage is as short as 30 m, owing to the restricted transmit power. This factor may cause a poor geometric relationship among the mobile nodes and anchor nodes in certain environments. To localize a group of pedestrians accurately, an enhanced cooperative localization method is proposed. We describe a sequential algorithm and define problems that may occur in the implementation of the algorithm. To solve these problems, a batch algorithm is proposed. The batch algorithm can be carried out after performing the sequential algorithm to linearize the nonlinear range equation. When a sequential algorithm cannot be performed due to a poor geometric relationship among nodes, a batch algorithm can be carried out directly. Herein, Monte Carlo simulations are presented to illustrate the proposed method and verify its performance.

With increasing the using of wireless technologies in essential fields such as the medical application, this paper proposes different scenarios for the transmission of images over wireless networks. The paper uses the IEEE ZigBee 802.15.4 for applying the proposed schemes. It is a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). This paper presents a novel chaotic interleaving scheme against error bursts. Also, the paper studies the proposed interleaver with the convolutional code with different constraint lengths (K). A comparison study between the standard scheme and proposed schemes for image transmission over a correlated fading channel is presented. The simulation results show the superiority of the proposed chaotic interleaving scheme over the traditional schemes. Also, the chaotic interleaver packet-by-packet basis gives a high quality image with (K=3) and reduces the need for the complex encoder with K=7.
Wireless sensor network technology is an emerging technology consisting of small, low power, and low cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. An ad-hoc home network system based embedded system for home environment monitoring was fabricated and tested. The wireless sensor node consists of a MCU, RF transceiver and sensors (temperature, humidity and light). Wireless sensor nodes run application software for data sampling and wireless communication, that was developed using 'nesC language' which runs on TinyOS. In our tests, acquired sensors data were monitored on 6.4" TFT-LCD of base-station through IEEE802.15.4 standard wireless communication. Also, the sensor data can be monitored by client user at the terminal PC to monitor environmental status of home in real time.
While the chirp signal is extensively used in radar and sonar systems for target decision in wireless communication systems, it has not been widely used for positioning in indoor environments. Recently, the IEEE 802.15.4a standard has adopted the chirp spread spectrum (CSS) as an underlying technique for low-power and low-complexity precise localization. Chirp signal based ranging solutions have been established and deployed but their ranging performance has not been analyzed in multipath environments. This paper presents a ranging performance analysis of a chirp signal and suggests a method to suppress multipath error by using a type of non-linear chirp signal. Multipath ranging performance is evaluated using a conventional linear chirp signal and the proposed non-linear chirp signal. We verify the feasibility of both methods using two-ray multipath model simulation. Our results demonstrate that the proposed non-linear chirp signal can successfully suppress the multipath error.

Combining multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) with a massive number of transmit antennas (massive MIMO-OFDM) is an attractive way of increasing the spectrum efficiency or reducing the transmission energy per bit. The effectiveness of Massive MIMO-OFDM is strongly affected by the channel state information (CSI) estimation method used. The overheads of training frame transmission and CSI feedback decrease multiple access channel (MAC) efficiency and increase the CSI estimation cost at a user station (STA). This paper proposes a CSI estimation scheme that reduces the training frame length by using a novel pilot design and a novel unitary matrix feedback method. The proposed pilot design and unitary matrix feedback enable the access point (AP) to estimate the CSI of the signal space of all transmit antennas using a small number of training frames. Simulations in an IEEE 802.11n channel verify the attractive transmission performance of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we design a gateway protocol architecture for building an IoT-based smart factory. A smart factory system consists of several terminal devices, gateways and servers, and connects them through a wireless network. The terminal device collects information from various sensors and transmits the information to the server through the gateway. The terminal device controls the actuator by receiving a control signal according to a control algorithm of the server or by manual operation. Therefore, the gateway system connects Wi-SUN, a wireless smart utility network, and the Internet, serves as a Wi-SUN coordinator, and is equipped with Modbus-TCP to interwork with SCADA.

In this paper, we propose a real-time service based on retransmission slot in low rate WPAN. In the proposed scheme, during the communication period of the beacon-enabled mode in LR-WPAN standard, a special GTSs is dynamically assigned for retransmission of the packet that fails during a real-time service such as voice. This provides a time diversity in the severe channel error environments to support the required QoS. Analytical results show that this scheme achieves a much higher throughput and better transmission success rate per GTS slot than conventional schemes such as a common reserved scheme in LR WPAN.
