  • Protease activity of fig (Ficus carica L.), cultivated in Korea was estimated. In particular, the proteolytic effect on myofibrilar protein was studied. A crude protease extract of fig was prepared in two ways; fig was homogenized in buffer followed by centrifugation, and the supernatant was precipitated by saturated ammonium sulfate followed by dialysis. The former method resulted in 41.15 mM/g fig protease activity, whereas the latter method resulted in 17.65 mM/g fig protease activity. The crude fig protease extract showed high specificity for casein as a substrate followed by egg white, bovine serum albumin, myofibrilar protein, collagen, and elastin. The extract had stable proteolytic activity in a pH range of 6.5~9.0 (optimal at pH 7-8) but lost activity, at pH 2-3. Proteolytic activity for myofibrilar protein was sensitive to pH. The proteolytic activity of the fig extract was steady up to $60^{\circ}C$ but declined at higher temperature. It also began to lose stability in salt concentrations >0.7 M NaCl. Fig has been used as a meat tenderizer for cooking, and these results support the tenderizing effectiveness of fig, particularly for Korean style meat marinating.

  • Objectives: This was a preliminary study to re-verify the reliability and validity of the Core Seven Emotions Inventory-Short Form (CSEI-s) and to establish standards for an objective scoring system such as T-scores and percentile for the normative group. Methods: Subjects were sampled through population-proportional regional allocation based on adults aged 20 or older and 65 or younger who voluntarily consented. Reliability was analyzed by performing an internal consistency (Cronbach's α) test and calculating means and standard deviations for each scale. The validity was analyzed between the CSEI-s and STAXI-K, SADS, COMOSWB, HADS, K-PANAS, Core emotions VAS. Results: The CSEI-s revealed notable gender discrepancies in aspects such as thought (思), fear (恐), and fright (驚), with women generally scoring higher than men. CSEI-s scores showed statistically significant differences in joy (喜) and thought (思) between those in their 20s and those in their 50s and 60s. As a result of the validity analysis, the seven-factor configuration was found to be statistically valid, and as a result of the correlation analysis with the coexistence scale, the correlation between each emotion and the seven emotions was found to be statistically significant. Cronbach's α for the CSEI-s was .891, showing statistically significant reliability. Conclusions: A preliminary study was conducted to standardize the shortened form of the Core Emotion Scale, and the reliability and validity were confirmed. A main survey of more people should be conducted in the future. Future results can contribute to revitalizing the development of oriental medicine evaluation tools and establishing an evidence base by standardizing the CSEI-s.

  • Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous, chronic, progressive disease characterized by hyperglycemia and abnormality in protein, carbohydrate, fat metabolism. Recent studies have reorted two times prevalence of depression in individuals with diabetes compared to individuals without diabetics. This study was designed to investigate glycemic controls, anxiety, alexithymia, stress responses between depressed diabetic patients and non-depressed diabetic patients. Methods The subjects were 60 diabetic patients(mean age : $50.3{\pm}9.7$ years, 31 men and 29 women) who were confirmed to have diabetes depending on the laboratory findings as welt as clinical symptoms at the St. Vincent Hospital Diabetes Clinic, from Mar. 2004 to Sep. 2004. Laboratory test including, blood chemistry. glycated hemoglobin, urinalysis for proteinuria and Korean version of Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), Toronto Alexithymia Scale(TAS) and Stress Response Inventory(SRI) were used for assessment. Based on BDI scores, all diabetics were divided into 13 depressed-diabetics group(above 20 point) and 47 non-depressed group(below 20 point). We compared demographic data. glycemic controls, STAI, TAS and SRI scores between two groups by independent t-test. Results : 1) Depressed diabetic groups were 13(mean age : $55.4{\pm}7.2$ years, 7 men and 6 women) and non depressed groups were 47(mean age $48.9{\pm}9.8$ years, 24 men and 23 women). In depressed diabetics, compared with non-depressed group, manifested aged(p=0.031), but other demographic data showed no difference between two groups. 2) No significant differences were noted in FBS, PP2h, Hb A1C, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, SGOT/SGPT, BUN levels between depressed and non-depressed groups. But, blood creatine levels of depressed group were significantly increased than non-depressed group(p=0.026). 3) No significant differences were found in the score of STAI, STAI-S, STAI-T, TAS between depressed and non-depressed groups. 4) The SRI scores of depressed groups were significantly higher than non-depressed groups$(59.7{\pm}24.9\;vs.\;31.5{\pm}22.0)(p=0.000)$. Conclusion : The above results suggest that depressed diabetic patients are have more stress responses and higher blood creatine levels. However, there were no differences in laboratory data related to glycemic controls, and anxiety. alexithymia levels between two groups. We suggest that physicians should consider integrated approaches for psychiatric problems in the management of diabetes.

  • A comparative study of enzymatic properties between the trypsin from the cat-shark Cephaloscyllium umbratile ( C-T) and the two trypsins from the mackerel Scomber japonicus $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ was carried out following after the previous paper(Pyeun et al., 1991). Trypsin from cat-shark(C-T) showed the higher heat stability compared to the others $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ and its denaturation constant$(K_D)$ was $10.68\times10^{-4}\;sec^{-1}\;at\;55^{\circ}C$ with BA-p-NA substrate. The activation energies(Ea) of the trypsins measured at a temperature range from $30^{\circ}C\;to\;50^{\circ}C$ were estimated to be 4.07 kcal/mole for C-T, 11.61 kcal/mole for $M-T_A$, and 8.43kcal/mole for $M-T_B$, respectively. The Km values were $24.9\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;C-T,\;5.37\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_A,\;and\;9.65\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$. On the other hand, the Ki values for TLCK and DFP determined by Dixon plot were $1.50\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;9.28\times10^{-6}\;M\;for\;C-T\;2.86\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;2.11\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_A\;and\;3.90\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;1.60\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$ Similar amino acid profiles were showed between three trypsins each other, with few exceptions of $M-T_B$ containing higher amount of arginine, and the smaller amount of tryptophan in C-T than the others.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the use of heated tobacco products (HTP) and suicidal behaviors such as suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts among adolescents in South Korea. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design. Data was from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) performed in 2019 by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Heated tobacco product use was used as a main independent variable and suicide-related behaviors such as suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts were applied as dependent variables. Out of 60,100 students, 57,303 responded. Results: HTP use significantly increased the odds of a suicide attempt and suicide planning among adolescents. After controlling for confounders, when comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 1.78 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.38-2.30) for suicide attempts among adolescents. After controlling the confounders, comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted OR was 1.36 (95% CI: 1.06-1.73) for suicide planning among adolescents. For sadness/despair among adolescents, when comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted OR was 1.29 (95% CI: 1.11-1.50). However, HTP use had no significant association with suicidal ideation among adolescents. Conclusions: Current HTP users were more likely to attempt to commit suicide, and more likely to plan to commit suicide than never HTP users among adolescents. These results may be useful in developing a scientific basis for designing suicide prevention programs targeting adolescents.
