  • Mechanical propeties of $Y_2O_3$-containing tetragonal $ZrO_2$ polycrystals(Y-TZP) were investigated. Several additives were used to modify the hardness fracture toughness of Y-TZP. The effects of these individual additives were discussed and their interactions were also analyzed. Each additive, such as CoO, $Fe2O3, MnO_2$ was found to deteriorate the mechanical propeties of Y-TZP when it was used singly. But the fracture toughness of Y-TZP was singnificantly improved when these additives and $Al_2O_3$ were added in combination at a certain ratio.

  • To increase the mechanical property of zirconia, we have investigated the phase change and the resulting hardness of zirconia ceramics by hydroxyapatite (HA) powder bed sintering. It was observed using X-ray diffraction that the cubic zirconia phase, which has a higher hardness value than that of the tetragonal phase, was obtained at the surface of 3 mol% $Y_2O_3$ doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramics during the sintering process; in our experimental conditions, the phase change at the surface increased as the sintering time increased. We believe that the observed crystalline phase change originated from the decomposition of HA and the diffusion of CaO, as follows. CaO, which was derived from the decomposition of HA at high temperature ($1400^{\circ}C$), diffused into the surface of 3Y-TZP and acted as a stabilizer. As a result, the Vickers hardness value of the treated specimens was higher than that of the non-treated specimen due to the formation of the cubic phase on the surface of 3Y-TZP.

  • Zircon, having excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties, is utilized in refractory materials, electronic materials, chemical machines, structural materials, etc. However, zircon generally shows thermal dissociation to zirconia($ZrO_2$) and silica($SiO_2$) around the sintering temperature of $1540^{\circ}C$, and when zircon particles are small and impurities are present, thermal dissociation is known to occur at around $1100^{\circ}C$. This reduces the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$. In this research, the effect of adding $SiO_2$ and 3Y-TZP to $ZrSiO_4$ has been studied in order to suppress dissociation and improve the mechanical properties. Addition of $SiO_2$ suppressed the dissociation of $ZrSiO_4$ at lower temperatures. It also enabled optimum packing between the particles, resulting in a dense microstructure and good mechanical properties. When 3Y-TZP was added, recombination with the dissociated $SiO_2$ resulted in good mechanical properties by suppressing the generation of pores and the densification of the microstructure.

  • 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals, 3Y-TZP) ceramics are emerging as dental implant materials due to their superior optical and mechanical properties as well as excellent biophysical properties, in spite of low bioactivity. In this study, we investigated to sintered properties and microstructural defects of dental zirconia implants fabricated by ceramic injection molding and post-HIP (Hot isostatic pressing) processing and analyzed the processing parameters related with the obtainment of its high sinterd density. Sintered and microstructural parameters, i.e, apparent density, grain size and phase composition of zirconia implants fabricated by injection molding were dependent on the fixtute size and implant type. Maximum sintered density of 99.2% and minimum grain size of 0.3-0.4 ㎛ were obtained from large-scaled 2-body sample. In 1-body ceramic implant, high sintered density of 99.5% was obtained, but it had a little monoclinic phase and wide grain size distribution.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrofluoric acid etching treatment on the bonding strength of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal(Y-TZP). Four groups of zirconia-resin cement specimens were prepared; 1) ZGS group (zirconia, no treatment), 2) ZGSH group (zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment) 3) H-ZGS group (Hybrid zirconia, no treatment) 4) H-ZGSH group (Hybrid zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment). The shear bond strength between zirconia and porcelain was measured using a Instron Universal Testing Machine(Model DBBP-500, Instron Corporation, Kyonggi, Korea). Data were statistically analyzed using independent t-test and two-way ANOVA(${\alpha}=0.05$). The ceramic-resin cement bonding strength was affected by hydrofluoric acid etching treatment(p<0.05). Digital microscope examination of the fracture surface showed mixed failures with adhesive and cohesive types in hydrofluoric acid etching treatment with treated zirconia and hybrid zirconia groups.

  • Although a lot of studies in fracture toughness of Y-TZP ceramics for structural applications have been done, it remains an important challenge to be able to improve fracture toughness of Y-TZP ceramics. In this research, milling method adding monoclinic zirconia and $Al_2O_3$ to 3Y-TZP was introduced to improve the fracture toughness of 3Y-TZP. Experimental results showed that addition of small amount of $Al_2O_3$ causes to make lots of oxygen vacancies (VO) by substituting $Al^{3+}$ for $Zr^{4+}$. It is believed that the produced vacancies provides useful routes far mass transfer. Y-TZP ceramics having higher microhardness and better fracture toughness was fabricated by sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$.

  • Effects of CuO addition on the sintering ability and the phase stability of Y-TZP. (Yttria doped Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals) were studied. The CuO dopants were found to be quite effective in reducing the sintering temperature to obtain full density and refining the grain size. The maximum allowable concentration of the dopants was limited to 0.3%mol% for CuO to maintain fully tetragonal phase. With the addition of these dopants, the flexual strength decreased by 20% in comparison with the undoped specimen but the fracture toughness increased by 15%.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of continuous application of 10-methacryloyloxydecyldihydrogen phosphate (MDP)-containing primer and luting resin cement on bond strength to tribochemical silica-coated yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP). Materials and Methods: Forty bovine teeth and Y-TZP specimens were prepared. The dentin specimens were embedded in molds, with one side of the dentin exposed for cementation with the zirconia specimen. The Y-TZP specimen was prepared in the form of a cylinder with a diameter of 3 mm and a height of 10 mm. The bonding surface of the Y-TZP specimen was sandblasted with silica-coated aluminium oxide particles. The forty tribochemical silica-coated Y-TZP specimens were cemented to the bovine dentin (4 groups; n = 10) with either an MDP-free primer or an MDP-containing primer and either an MDP-free resin cement or an MDP-containing resin cement. After a shear bond strength (SBS) test, the data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The group with MDP-free primer and resin cement showed significantly lower SBS values than the MDP-containing groups (p < 0.05). Among the MDP-containing groups, the group with MDP-containing primer and resin cement showed significantly higher SBS values than the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of MDP-containing primer and luting cement following tribochemical silica coating to Y-TZP was the best choice among the alternatives tested in this study.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate translucency and masking ability of translucent zirconia compared to conventional zirconia and lithium disilicate materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three types of zirconia blocks with different yttria contents (3Y, 4Y, 5.5Y) and LS blocks (Rosetta SM) were used. Ten specimens for each group were fabricated with 10 mm diameter, with both 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm thicknesses (± 0.02 mm). All groups of zirconia specimens were sintered and polished according to the manufacturer's instructions. To calculate the translucency parameter (TP), CIELAB value was measured with a spectrophotometer on black and white backgrounds. To investigate the color masking abilities, background shades of A2, normal dentin, discolored dentin, and titanium were used. The color difference (ΔE) was calculated with the CIELAB values of A2 shade background as a reference compared with the values in the various backgrounds. One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests were conducted (P < .05). RESULTS. The TP values of zirconia specimens increased as the yttria content increased. All materials used in the study were able to adequately mask normal dentin shade (ΔE < 5.5), but were incapable of masking severely discolored dentin (ΔE > 5.5). On the titanium background, all materials of 1.5 mm thickness were able to mask the background shade, but with a thickness of 0.8 mm, only 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ were able to mask titanium background. CONCLUSION. All zirconia materials and lithium disilicate specimens used in this study were unable to adequately mask the shade of severely discolored dentin. It is recommended to use 3Y-TZP or 4Y-PSZ with a sufficient thickness of 0.8 mm or more to mask titanium.
