Accuracy Comparison Between Image-based 3D Reconstruction Technique and Terrestrial LiDAR for As-built BIM of Outdoor Structures

  • With the increasing demands of 3D spatial information in urban environment, the importance of point clouds generation techniques have been increased. In particular, for as-built BIM, the point clouds with the high accuracy and density is required to describe the detail information of building components. Since the terrestrial LiDAR has high performance in terms of accuracy and point density, it has been widely used for as-built 3D modelling. However, the high cost of devices is obstacle for general uses, and the image-based 3D reconstruction technique is being a new attraction as an alternative solution. This paper compares the image-based 3D reconstruction technique and the terrestrial LiDAR in point of establishing the as-built BIM of outdoor structures. The point clouds generated from the image-based 3D reconstruction technique could roughly present the 3D shape of a building, but could not precisely express detail information, such as windows, doors and a roof of building. There were 13.2~28.9 cm of RMSE between the terrestrial LiDAR scanning data and the point clouds, which generated from smartphone and DSLR camera images. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the image-based 3D reconstruction can be used in drawing building footprint and wireframe, and the terrestrial LiDAR is suitable for detail 3D outdoor modeling.

Measurement of Joint Aperture Using 3-D Laser Profilometer (3차원 레이저 측정기를 이용한 절리 간극의 측정)

  • Aperture is an important parameter for determining the hydraulic characteristics of fractured media. In this study the topography of artificial rock joint surface was measured using 3D laser profilometer to analyze the aperture distribution. The initial aperture distribution was determined when the contact area became one percent of total joint surface. The initial aperture distribution of granite joint, with the mean value of 0.78 mm and the standard deviation of 0.34 mm was much different from that of the marble joint, with the mean value of 0.57 mm and the standard deviation of 0.26 mm. Apertures of both granite and marble showed normal distributions. Aperture distribution with the contact area of 25% was also analyzed. Mean value was decreased to one third compared to the initial aperture, but the standard deviation was decreased slightly. To determine the spatial correlation of the aperture distribution variogram analysis was carried out on the initial aperture data. Most experimental variograms were fitted well with exponential model. It is expected that the measured aperture characteristics can be used for stochastic analysis of fluid flow through rock joints.

A Study on Local Three-Dimensional Visualization Methodology for Effective Analysis of Construction Environments in Extreme Cold Regions (효과적인 극한지 건설환경 분석을 위한 현지 3차원 가시화 방안 연구)

  • For construction project in extreme cold region, it is essential to establish basic data on the site such as topographical data from the early stage of construction of planning and designing, and it is needed to frequently perform site investigation when necessary. However, extreme cold regions are characteristic of being at long distance and difficult in approaching, and special regions such as Antarctica, in particular, are hard to conduct site investigation. Although a site investigation may be conducted, those who can visit Antarctica are sufficiently limited so that most of the staff may participate in construction without knowledge of the site and increase the risk of errors in decision making or designing. In order to resolve such problems, the authors in this study identified methods of building wide-area topographical data and bedrock classification data of exposed areas via remote sensing and of building precise topographical data on the construction site. Also, the authors attempted to present methods by which such data can be managed and visualized integrally via three-dimensional GIS technology and all the participants in construction can learn sense of field and conduct necessary analysis as frequent as possible. The areas around the Jangbogo Antarctic Station were selected to be the research area for conducting effective integrational management and three-dimensional visualization of various spatial data such as wide-area digital elevation model, ortho-images, bedrock classification data, local precise digital elevation model, and site images. The results of this study may enable construction firms to analyze local environments for construction whenever they need for construction in extreme cold regions and then support construction work including decision making or designing.

  • Scene graph is a kind of knowledge graph that represents both objects and their relationships found in a image. This paper proposes a 3D scene graph generation model for three-dimensional indoor environments. An 3D scene graph includes not only object types, their positions and attributes, but also three-dimensional spatial relationships between them, An 3D scene graph can be viewed as a prior knowledge base describing the given environment within that the agent will be deployed later. Therefore, 3D scene graphs can be used in many useful applications, such as visual question answering (VQA) and service robots. This proposed 3D scene graph generation model consists of four sub-networks: object detection network (ObjNet), attribute prediction network (AttNet), transfer network (TransNet), relationship prediction network (RelNet). Conducting several experiments with 3D simulated indoor environments provided by AI2-THOR, we confirmed that the proposed model shows high performance.

  • TRecently, smart cities that solve various problems in cities based on IoT technology are in the spotlight. In particular, cases of BIM application for smooth management of construction and maintenance are increasing, and spatial information is converted into 3D data through convergence technology and used for safety diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to create and combine point clouds of a multi-story building by using a ground laser scanner and a handheld LiDAR SLAM among UAV and LiDAR equipment, supplementing the Occluded area and disadvantages of each technology, examine the effectiveness of indoor and outdoor reverse design by observing shape reproduction and accuracy. As a result of the review, it was confirmed that the coordinate accuracy of the data was improved by creating and combining the indoor and outdoor point clouds of the multi-story building using three technologies. In particular, by supplementing the shortcomings of each technology, the completeness of the shape reproduction of the building was improved, the Occluded area and boundary were clearly distinguished, and the effectiveness of reverse engineering was verified.

Application of Multispectral Remotely Sensed Imagery for the Characterization of Complex Coastal Wetland Ecosystems of southern India: A Special Emphasis on Comparing Soft and Hard Classification Methods

  • This paper makes an effort to compare the recently evolved soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) with the traditional hard classification methods based on Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis (ISODATA) and Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) algorithms in order to achieve appropriate results for mapping, monitoring and preserving valuable coastal wetland ecosystems of southern India using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) 1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image data. ISODATA and MLC methods were attempted on these satellite image data to produce maps of 5, 10, 15 and 20 wetland classes for each of three contrast coastal wetland sites, Pitchavaram, Vedaranniyam and Rameswaram. The accuracy of the derived classes was assessed with the simplest descriptive statistic technique called overall accuracy and a discrete multivariate technique called KAPPA accuracy. ISODATA classification resulted in maps with poor accuracy compared to MLC classification that produced maps with improved accuracy. However, there was a systematic decrease in overall accuracy and KAPPA accuracy, when more number of classes was derived from IRS-1C/1D and Landsat-5 TM imagery by ISODATA and MLC. There were two principal factors for the decreased classification accuracy, namely spectral overlapping/confusion and inadequate spatial resolution of the sensors. Compared to the former, the limited instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of these sensors caused occurrence of number of mixture pixels (mixels) in the image and its effect on the classification process was a major problem to deriving accurate wetland cover types, in spite of the increasing spatial resolution of new generation Earth Observation Sensors (EOS). In order to improve the classification accuracy, a soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) was described to calculate the spectral mixture and classify IRS-1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 TM Imagery. This method considered number of reflectance end-members that form the scene spectra, followed by the determination of their nature and finally the decomposition of the spectra into their endmembers. To evaluate the LSMM areal estimates, resulted fractional end-members were compared with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ground truth data, as well as those estimates derived from the traditional hard classifier (MLC). The findings revealed that NDVI values and vegetation fractions were positively correlated ($r^2$= 0.96, 0.95 and 0.92 for Rameswaram, Vedaranniyam and Pitchavaram respectively) and NDVI and soil fraction values were negatively correlated ($r^2$ =0.53, 0.39 and 0.13), indicating the reliability of the sub-pixel classification. Comparing with ground truth data, the precision of LSMM for deriving moisture fraction was 92% and 96% for soil fraction. The LSMM in general would seem well suited to locating small wetland habitats which occurred as sub-pixel inclusions, and to representing continuous gradations between different habitat types.

A Study on the 3D Reconstruction and Historical Evidence of Recumbent Buddha Based on Fusion of UAS, CRP and Terrestrial LiDAR (UAS, CRP 및 지상 LiDAR 융합기반 와형석조여래불의 3차원 재현과 고증 연구)

  • Recently, Interest in the restoration and 3D reconstruction of cultural properties due to the fire of Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019 has been focused once again after the 2008 Sungnyemun fire incident in South Korea. In particular, research to restore and reconstruct the actual measurement of cultural properties using LiDAR(Light Detection and ranging) and conventional surveying, which were previously used, using various 3D reconstruction technologies, is being actively conducted. This study acquires data using unmanned aerial imagery of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), which has recently established itself as a core technology in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, and the existing CRP(Closed Range Photogrammetry) and terrestrial LiDAR scanning for the Recumbent Buddha of Unju Temple. Then, the 3D reconstruction was performed with three fusion models based on SfM(Structure-from-Motion), and the reproducibility and accuracy of the models were compared and analyzed. In addition, using the best fusion model among the three models, the relationship with the Polar Star(Polaris) was confirmed based on the real world coordinates of the Recumbent Buddha, which contains the astronomical history of Buddhism in the early 11th century Goryeo Dynasty. Through this study, not only the simple external 3D reconstruction of cultural properties, but also the method of reconstructing the historical evidence according to the type and shape of the cultural properties was sought by confirming the historical evidence of the cultural properties in terms of spatial information.

A Comparative Study of 3D DWT Based Space-borne Image Classification for Differnet Types of Basis Function

  • In the previous study, the Haar wavelet was used as the sole basis function for the 3D discrete wavelet transform because the number of bands is too small to decompose a remotely sensed image in band direction with other basis functions. However, it is possible to use other basis functions for wavelet decomposition in horizontal and vertical directions because wavelet decomposition is independently performed in each direction. This study aims to classify a high spatial resolution image with the six types of basis function including the Haar function and to compare those results. The other wavelets are more helpful to classify high resolution imagery than the Haar wavelet. In overall accuracy, the Coif4 wavelet has the best result. The improvement of classification accuracy is different depending on the type of class and the type of wavelet. Using the basis functions with long length could be effective for improving accuracy in classification, especially for the classes of small area. This study is expected to be used as fundamental information for selecting optimal basis function according to the data properties in the 3D DWT based image classification.

Estimation of spatial parameters to be included in 3D mapping for long-term forest road management

  • Point cloud-based 3D maps can obtain many kinds of information for maintenance work on forest road networks. This study was conducted to compare the importance of each factor to select the factors required for the mapping of 3D forest road maps. This can be used as basic data for attribute information required to maintain forest road networks. The results of this study found that out of a total of 30 indexes extracted for mapping 3D forest roads, a total of 21 indexes related to stakeholder groups were significantly different. The importance of the index required by the civil service group was significantly higher than that of the other groups overall. In the case of the academic group, the index importance for cut slope, fill slope, and drainage facility was significantly higher. On the other hand, the index importance for the forestry cooperative and forest professional engineer group was mostly distributed between the civil servants' group and the academic group. In particular, the type of drainage system showed the highest value among the detailed indexes. Overall, drainage related factors in this survey had high coefficient values. The impact of water on forest roads was the most important part in road maintenance. In addition, the soil texture had a high value in relation to slope stability. This is thought to be because the texture of the soil affects the stability of the slope.

Topology Representation for the Voronoi Diagram of 3D Spheres

  • Euclidean Voronoi diagram of spheres in 3-dimensional space has not been explored as much as it deserves even though it has significant potential impacts on diverse applications in both science and engineering. In addition, studies on the data structure for its topology have not been reported yet. Presented in this, paper is the topological representation for Euclidean Voronoi diagram of spheres which is a typical non-manifold model. The proposed representation is a variation of radial edge data structure capable of dealing with the topological characteristics of Euclidean Voronoi diagram of spheres distinguished from those of a general non-manifold model and Euclidean Voronoi diagram of points. Various topological queries for the spatial reasoning on the representation are also presented as a sequence of adjacency relationships among topological entities. The time and storage complexities of the proposed representation are analyzed.
