  • A code is developed using the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method and it is applied to simulate flows around a three-dimensional deforming body. A new criterion is suggested to distribute the immersed boundary nodes based on edges crossing a body boundary. Velocities are reconstructed at the immersed boundary nodes using the interpolation along a local normal line to the boundary. Reconstruction of the pressure at the immersed boundary node is avoided using the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid method. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other experimental and numerical results for the velocity profiles around a circular cylinder under the forced in-line oscillation and the pressure coefficient distribution on a sphere. The code is applied to simulate the flow fields around a plate whose tail is periodically flapping under a translation. The effects of the velocity and acceleration due to the deformation on the periodic shedding of pairs of tip vortices are investigated.

  • IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.

  • The IB-SEM numerical method combines the spectral/hp element method and the rigid immersed boundary method. This method avoids the problems of low computational efficiency and errors that are caused by the re-division of the grid when the solids move. Based on the Fourier transformation and the 3D immersed boundary method, the 3D IB-SEM system was established. Then, using the open MPI and the Hamilton HPC service, the computational efficiency was increased substantially. The flows around a cylinder and a sphere were simulated by the system. The surface of the cylinder generates vortices with alternating shedding, and these vortices result in a periodic force acting on the surface of the cylinder. When the shedding vortices enter the flow field behind the cylinder, a recirculation zone is formed. Finally, the three-dimensional pore flow was successfully investigated.

  • A hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary code is expanded to simulate flow field around a three-dimensional body which undergoes large dynamic deformation. Immersed boundary nodes are automatically distributed based on the edges crossing triangles on body boundary. Velocity vectors are reconstructed at those immersed boundary nodes along local normal lines to the boundary. The reconstruction of pressure is avoided using the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid method. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other results on laminar flow over a sphere. The code is applied to simulate flow around a foil which is attached to a body of revolution and rotates under periodic deformation. The periodic variation of the tip vortex is observed and the effects of the deformation on hydrodynamic force acting on the body are investigated.

  • We present an immersed boundary (IB) method for 3D simulation of flappingflags in a uniform flow. The proposed formulation is manipulated on the basis of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A direct numerical method is developed to calculate the flag motion, with the elastic force treated implicitly. The fluid motion defined on an Eulerian grid and the flag motion defined on a Lagrangian grid are independently solved and the mass of flag is handled in a natural way. An additional momentum forcing is formulated from the flag motion equation in a way similar with the direct-forcing IB formulation and acts as the interaction force between the flag and ambient fluid. A series of numerical tests are performed and the present results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with previous studies. The instantaneous flag motion is analyzed under different conditions and surrounding vortical structures are identified. The effects of physical parameters on the flapping frequency are studied.

  • An immersed boundary method(IBM, Kim et al.(2001)) for simulating flows over complex geometries is applied to computation of three-dimensional Floquet stability of a periodic wake. Floquet stability analysis is employed to extract different modes of three-dimensional instability. To verify the present method, a fully-resolved Floquet stability calculation for flow past a circular cylinder is considered. There are two different instability modes with long(mode A) and short (mode B) spanwise wavelengths for the periodic wake of a circular cylinder. The critical Reynolds number and the most unstable spanwise wavelengths of modes A and B are computed using the present method, and compared with other authors' results currently available.

  • Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method has been applied to analyze the characteristics of the self-propelled fish motion swimming robot. The airfoil NACA0012 with caudal fin stroke model was considered to examine the characteristics. The foil in steady forward motion and a combination of steady-state harmonic deformation produces thrust through the formation of a flow downstream from the trailing edge. The harmonic motion of the foil causes unsteady shedding of vorticity from the trailing edge, while forming the vortices at the leading edge as well. The resultant thrust is developed by the pressure difference formed on the upper and lower surface of the airfoil. and the time averaged thrust coefficient increases as Re increase in the region of $Re{\leqq}700$. The suggested numerical method is suitable to develop the fish-motion model to control the swimming robot, however It would need to extend in 3D analysis to examine the higher Re and to determine the more detail mechanism of thrust production.

  • In this paper a parametric study using an immersed boundary method has been carried out to investigate the effects of stable density stratification on the wakes past two identical three-dimensional hills aligned in tandem. The Reynolds number based on the uniform inlet velocity and twice the hill height was fixed at Re=300 while the Froude number based on the inlet velocity and the hill height was retained at Fr=0.2. Neutral flow without density stratification was also computed for comparison. Under a strong stratification, vertical motion of fluid particles over the three-dimensional hills is suppressed and the wake structures behind the hills become planar. Depending on the distance between the two hills, the flow pattern of each wake is significantly affected by the stratification. There is a critical hill distance at which flow characteristics drastically change. Qualitative and quantitative features of the wake interaction are reported.

  • Numerical flow computations around an aeroelastic 3D square cylinder immersed in the turbulent boundary layer are shown. Present computational code can be characterized by three numerical aspects which are 1) the method of artificial compressibility is adopted for the incompressible flow computations, 2) the domain decomposition technique is used to get better grid point distributions, and 3) to achieve the conservation law both in time and space when the flow is computed a with moving and transformed grid, the time derivatives of metrics are evaluated using the time-and-space volume. To provide time-dependant inflow boundary conditions satisfying prescribed time-averaged velocity profiles, a convenient way for generating inflow turbulence is proposed. The square cylinder is modeled as a 4-lumped-mass system and it vibrates with two-degree of freedom of heaving motion. Those blocks which surround the cylinder are deformed according to the cylinder's motion. Vigorous oscillations occur as the vortex shedding frequency approaches cylinder's natural frequencies.
