  • In this study, open conical shells with ring and stringers are analyzed A versatile 4-node shell element which is useful for the analysis of conical shell structures is used and 3-D beam element is used for stiffeners. An improved flat shell element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming displacement modes and the substitute shear strain fields. The proposed element has six degrees of freedom per node and permits an easy connection to other types(beam element) of finite elements. Optimum location and optimum section properties of ring and stinger are obtained. It is shown thai the thickness of conical shell can be reduced about $20\~50\%$ by appropriate location of stiffeners.

  • In the high-speed EMU, the modularized traction converter produces the significant harmonic currents caused from the switching behavior of a power converter. These harmonic currents bring the interference among the traction equipment. One way to minimize the interference is to design the secondary windings of a power transformer decoupled magnetically as possible. This paper presents a magnetic field analysis on a winding disposition to clarify an impact on magnetic decoupling between secondary windings, under a limited height of a train. Two winding dispositions for a single-phase shell-type transformer are constructed and simulated by a three-dimensional finite elements method (FEM) model. Two different winding dispositions are constructed and simulated by three-dimensional FEM model using Maxwell3D.

  • A nano-imprinting stage has been widely used in various fields of nano-technology. In this study, A 4-axis nano-imprinting stage is modeled with using the 3D-CAD Tool. Structural components such as an upper-plate, bearings and cross-roller-guides are modeled with finite elements to analyze flexibility effect during the precision stage motion. In addition, Dynamic analysis is executed to reproduce actual motion of 4-axis nano imprinting stage.

  • To study the effect of a disc creep on the cauda-equina occlusion, 3D-viscoelastic FE model including dura mater was developed. The model was analyzed according to various loading conditions and studied the contact between cauda-equina and nearby elements with time. With this contact the volume of the cauda-equina was changed. The contact and change of the volume were happened most highly in extension with time. By this result, it was concluded that the extension is the most fatal motion to cauda-equina in lumbar spine in all time region.

  • In this paper, the transient response analysis of the trapezoidal corrugated plate subjected to the pulse load is investigated by the theoretical method. Three types of pulse loads are considered: stepped, isosceles triangular and right triangular pulse loads. The corrugated plates can be represented as an orthotropic plate. Both the effective extensional and flexural stiffness of this equivalent orthotropic plate are considered in the analysis. The plate is stiffened by concentric stiffeners perpendicular to the corrugation direction. The stiffening effect is represented by the discrete stiffener theory. This theoretical results are validated by those obtained from 3D finite element analysis based on shell elements. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • Many different types of floating slab track have been developed and installed around the world to reduce vibrations and noise originating in the surrounding environment. The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of slab length on behavior of floating slab track based on rail-slab-isolator interaction. The floating slab track is modeled by the connection between rail, slab, isolator, and slab mat in the transition zone. All elements were assembled in a simplified two-dimensional (2D) finite element model (FEM). The maximum length of FST is then investigated based on the maximum additional rail stress criterion as described in UIC 774-3R since no fully accepted design criteria for the slab length in FST systems currently exist.

  • The rockfall protection fences are installed to reduce rockfall damage in roads side slopes. The energy absorbing capacity of widely used rockfall protection fences is about 50kJ, But in many cases, rockfall protection fences are easily damaged even by a low level of rockfall energy. The objective of this paper is to verify the energy absorbing capacity of rockfall protection fences and investigate the behavior of them by rockfall. The LS-DYNA3D, a finite elements analysis program for dynamic movement of three dimensional objects, is used to perform the numerical simulations. In the result it is shown that rockfall protection fences absorb half of standard absorbing energy or less than it. It is inadquate for the rockfall protection fences to perform the principal function. To improve the performance of the fences, new rockfall proctection fence is proposed and numerical simulation is performed.

  • This study addresses cracks and fracture problems in engineering structures that may cause significant challenges and safety concerns, with a focus on pressure vessels in nuclear power plants. Comprehensive parametric three-dimensional mixed mode fracture analyses for inclined and deflected nozzle corner cracks with various crack shape aspect ratios and depth ratios in nuclear reactor pressure vessels are carried out. Stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions are obtained using FRAC3D, which is part of Fracture and Crack Propagation Analysis System (FCPAS), employing enriched finite elements along the crack front. Also, improved empirical equations are developed to allow the determination of mixed mode SIFs, KI, KII, and KIII, for any values of the parameters considered in the study. This study provides practical solutions to assess the remaining life and fail-safe conditions of nuclear reactors by providing accurate SIF determination.

  • In this work, signal transmission properties of SATA connector have been improved using its differential impedance calculation and its design revision to closer impedance matching. Using 3 dimensional electromagnetic field simulator, the differential mode S-parameter was calculated to investigate its signal fidelity. The differential impedance is calculated from the equation of the odd mode impedance with inductance, capacitance, mutual inductance, and mutual capacitance. The differential impedance of SATA connector was calculated to be $107.3{\Omega}$ and did not meet the design specification with $100{\Omega}{\pm}5%$. In order to achieve its impedance range and improve its signal transmission properties, SATA connector's design has been revised with two different directions and analyzed through the calculation of differential impedance, differential reflection loss, and differential insertion loss.
