The wavy extinction of quartz grains can be used as a good indicator to show the degree of rock deformation. To determine degree of the rock deformation, intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz grains was measured by using polarizing microscope, digital camera, and NIH image (or Scion Image). In this experiment, the measurement was performed along the line perpendicular to the subgrain boundary of wavy extinction. IWE was measured when a quartz grain shows maximum extinction in polarizing microscope. NIH image was represented in terms of 256 gray-scale brightness, which was associated with intensity of the wavy extinction. IWE was determined by the degree of brightness versus the measuring length of a quartz grain. IWE was analysed in the distribution chart with the collection unit of 5. Regarding the characteristics of data distribution, the median between the mode and the median of the histogram is defined as a representative value for the IWE, and this value is subdivided into the five levels of rock deformation zones (lowest- or non-, low-, medium-, high-, and highest deformation) with their respective indices (D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5). The correlation between the Eonyang Granite and the Yangsan Fault was investigated by using the indices. The results indicate that IWE values decreased away from the fault.
Amorphous carbon (a-C) has excellent wear resistance and, therefore is used as a coating to protect numerous mechanical components to prolong their lifetimes. Among the a-C coatings, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and DLC-containing silicon (Si-DLC) receive extensive attention owing to their enhanced wear resistance and low frictional characteristics. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of DLC and Si-DLC coatings are analyzed. For comparative analysis, DLC-coated and Si-DLC-coated vanes are utilized with the counterpart of a roller for the friction tests. Since the lubricated mechanical components are generally vulnerable to wear when a lubricant film does not form properly, friction tests are conducted under boundary lubrication conditions to promote wear. A cylinder-on-cylinder type tribometer is used to perform the friction tests with various normal load conditions. After the friction test, a 3D laser confocal microscope is used for quantifying the wear volume to calculate the wear rate of each specimen. Consequently, the DLC-coated specimen shows a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate than the specimen without the coating, while the Si-DLC coating shows a higher COF than the bare specimen. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the efficiency and reliability of compressors.

In this paper, we studied resolution to the FBP(Filtered Back-Propagation) tomographic image reconstruction algorithms. In order to analyze the resolution to the tomographic images, we derived ambiguity function to this algorithm which can be reconstructed from the improved FBP image reconstruction algorithm by using fixed coordinate system practically. Through simulation using this function, we determined the lateral and depth resolution quantitively and then analyzed respectively. Simulation results show that the lateral and depth resolution to the improved FBP image reconstruction algerian was determined $0.27\lambda\;and\;0.70\lambda$ at the 3dB, and also $0.89\lambda\;and\;0.96\lambda$ at the 6dB respectively. This results proved that improved FBP reconstruction algorithms for diffraction tomography of incident planar wave is useful to developed the tomographic image system, analyze the resolution to the tomographic images, we derived ambiguity function to this algerian which can be reconstructed from the improved FBP image reconstruction algorithm by using fixed coordinate system.
Fracture roughness of rock specimens is observed by a new confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM; Olympus OLS1100). The wave length of laser is 488 nm, and the laser scanning is managed by a light polarization method using two galvano-meter scanner mirrors. The function of laser reflection auto-focusing enables us to measure line data fast and precisely. The system improves resolution in the light axis (namely z) direction because of the confocal optics. Using the CLSM, it is Possible to measure a specimen of the size up to $10{\;}{\times}{\;}10{\;}cm$ which is fixed on a specially designed stage. A sampling is managed in a spacing $2.5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ along x and y directions. The highest measurement resolution of z direction is $10{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, which is more accurate than other methods. Core specimens of coarse and fine grained granite are provided. Fractures are artificially maneuvered by a Brazilian test method. Measurements are performed along three scan lines on each fracture surface. The measured data are represented as 2-D and 3-D digital images showing detailed features of roughness. Line profiles of the coarse granites represent more frequent change of undulation than those of the fine granite. Spectral analyses by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) are performed to characterize the roughness data quantitatively and to identify influential frequency of roughness. The FFT results suggest that a specimen loaded by large and low frequency energy tends to have high values of undulation change and large wave length of fracture roughness.
The wavy extinction of quartz can be used as a standard indicator showing the degree of rock deformation. In determine the degree of rock deformation, the intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz was measured using polarizing microscope, digital camera, and NIH Image program. This method was applied to the granite of Pocheon-Gisanri area, which are divided three type; biotite granite (Gb), garnet biotite granite (Ggb) and two mica granite (Gtm). In this study, measurement of wavy extinction was proceeded Ggb in eastern part and Gb in western part based on the Pocheoneup. The result was that Gb shows low deformation degree below D2, and Ggb represents high deformation degree above D3, generally showing that increasing deformation degree from northwest to southeast in the studied area. It is suggested that the fault which penetrated Ggb in 1/250,000 geological map affected the deformation degree of Ggb.
A stone seated bodhisattva (Sinsu5971) was discovered in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do in 1974 and was transferred to the Chuncheon National Museum upon its opening in 2002. The statue had damage to wide areas and was thus difficult to restore. This study utilized 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies to identify the overall form of the statue and the degree of damage, which allowed the restoration of lost portions that otherwise could not have been accurately restored to their original shape. Prior to the conservation treatment, the pigments used to decorate the surface were investigated using an optical microscope, and their main components were analyzed with a p-XRF (Potable X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer). The deteriorated lacquered surface was stabilized using animal glue and consolidated with stone strengthener (OH-100). The investigation found that the surface of the statue was made of zeolite that was lacquered and then gilded. As for pigments, white lead was used for the white color and red lead and cinnabar were used for red. The lost portions were redesigned by mirroring the remaining parts with 3D technologies. However, it was difficult to affix the 3D printing outputs to the statue without visible gaps since the damaged parts suffered flection. The portions of the outputs to be connected to the statue were thus modified and supplemented. It was also difficult to collect data on the properties of 3D printing materials due to the lack of previous in-depth study. These obstacles are subjects for further study.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the wear resistance of 3D printed, milled, and conventionally cured provisional resin materials. Materials and methods: Four types of resin materials made with different methods were examined: Stereolithography apparatus (SLA) 3D printed resin (S3P), digital light processing (DLP) 3D printed resin (D3P), milled resin (MIL), conventionally self-cured resin (CON). In the 3D printed resin specimens, the build orientation and layer thickness were set to $0^{\circ}$ and $100{\mu}m$, respectively. The specimens were tested in a 2-axis chewing simulator with the steatite as the antagonist under thermocycling condition (5 kg, 30,000 cycles, 0.8 Hz, $5^{\circ}C/55^{\circ}C$). Wear losses of the specimens were calculated using CAD software and scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate wear surface of the specimens. Statistical significance was determined using One-way ANOVA and Dunnett T3 analysis (${\alpha}=.05$). Results: Wear losses of the S3P, D3P, and MIL groups significantly smaller than those of the CON group (P < .05). There was no significant difference among S3P, D3P, and MIL group (P > .05). In the SEM observations, in the S3P and D3P groups, vertical cracks were observed in the sliding direction of the antagonist. In the MIL group, there was an overall uniform wear surface, whereas in the CON group, a distinct wear track and numerous bubbles were observed. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, provisional resin materials made with 3D printing show adequate wear resistance for applications in dentistry.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the marginal gap of all-ceramic crowns fabricated by CEREC$^{(R)}$ in-office CAD/CAM system. Methods: The mandibular first molar was selected as the abutment for the experiments. Thirty working models were prepared. VITA Mark II(VM) and VITA Enamic(VE), LAVA Ultimate(LU) blocks were milled using CEREC MCXL with CEREC 3D system to construct 10 crowns for each groups. To measure marginal gap, milled restorations were examined under digital microscope with scale under 160x magnifications. The results were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: There was no significant difference in the marginal gap regarding to ceramic materials(p>0.05). Conclusion: Single crowns fabricated using CEREC in-office CAD/CAM system provided clinically acceptable marginal gap. This confirmed that the type of ceramic material used does not determine the precision of fit of a prosthesis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to analysis of marginal adaptation of metal cores fabricated by selective laser sintering. Methods: Main model was prepared and ten stone models were fabricated. Ten single metal cores were fabricated by selective laser sintering(SLS group) and another ten single metal cores using lost wax technique and casting method were manufactured(CAST group). The marginal adaptation of metal cores were analysis using by the silicone replica technique. Silicone replicas were sectioned two times. The marginal adaptations were measured using by digital microscope. Statistical analyses was performed with independent t-test(${\bullet}{\cdot}=0.05$). Results: Means of marginal adaptations were 90.3 ${\ss}{\uparrow}$ for SLS group and 65.1 ${\ss}{\uparrow}$ for CAST group. Two groups were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Marginal adaptation of metal cores fabricated by selective laser sintering were ranged within the clinical recommendation.
In this paper, the Curing process for Epoxy Molding Compound (EMC) Package was developed by comparing the performance of the EMC/Cu Bi-layer package manufactured by the conventional Hot Press process system and Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) Heater process system of the surface heating system. The viscosity of EMC was measured by using a rheometer for the curing cycle of the CNT Heater. In the EMC/Cu Bi-layer Package manufactured through the two process methods by mentioned above, the voids inside the EMC was analyzed using an optical microscope. In addition, the interfacial void and warpage of the EMC/Cu Bi-layer Package were analyzed through C-Scanning Acoustic Microscope and 3D-Digital Image Correlation. According to these experimental results, it was confirmed that there was neither void in the EMC interior nor difference in the warpage at room temperature, the zero-warpage temperature and the change in warpage.
