In this paper we examine and compare the computational speeds of three-dimensional (3D) object recognition by use of digital holography based on central unit processing (CPU) and graphic processing unit (GPU) computing. The holographic fringe pattern of a 3D object is obtained using an in-line interferometry setup. The Fourier matched filters are applied to the complex image reconstructed from the holographic fringe pattern using a GPU chip for real-time 3D object recognition. It is shown that the computational speed of the 3D object recognition using GPU computing is significantly faster than that of the CPU computing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on comparisons of the calculation time of the 3D object recognition based on the digital holography with CPU vs GPU computing.
Objective: To investigate the feasibility of cine three-dimensional (3D) balanced steady-state free precession (b-SSFP) imaging combined with a non-local means (NLM) algorithm for image denoising in evaluating cardiac function in children with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients with rTOF (mean age, 12 years; range, 7-18 years) were enrolled to undergo cardiac cine image acquisition, including two-dimensional (2D) b-SSFP, 3D b-SSFP, and 3D b-SSFP combined with NLM. End-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV), and ejection fraction (EF) of the two ventricles were measured and indexed by body surface index. Acquisition time and image quality were recorded and compared among the three imaging sequences. Results: 3D b-SSFP with denoising vs. 2D b-SSFP had high correlation coefficients for EDV, ESV, SV, and EF of the left (0.959-0.991; p < 0.001) as well as right (0.755-0.965; p < 0.001) ventricular metrics. The image acquisition time ± standard deviation (SD) was 25.1 ± 2.4 seconds for 3D b-SSFP compared with 277.6 ± 0.7 seconds for 2D b-SSFP, indicating a significantly shorter time with the 3D than the 2D sequence (p < 0.001). Image quality score was better with 3D b-SSFP combined with denoising than with 3D b-SSFP (mean ± SD, 3.8 ± 0.6 vs. 3.5 ± 0.6; p = 0.005). Signal-to-noise ratios for blood and myocardium as well as contrast between blood and myocardium were higher for 3D b-SSFP combined with denoising than for 3D b-SSFP (p < 0.05 for all but septal myocardium). Conclusion: The 3D b-SSFP sequence can significantly reduce acquisition time compared to the 2D b-SSFP sequence for cine imaging in the evaluation of ventricular function in children with rTOF, and its quality can be further improved by combining it with an NLM denoising method.

VTK is a free but professional development platform for images three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and processing. It is powerful, open-source, and users can customize their own needs by self-development of great flexibility. To give the doctors more and detailed information by simulate dissection to the 3-D brain MRI image after reconstruction. A Visualization System (VS) is proposed to achieve 3D brain reconstruction and virtual dissection functions. Based on the free VTK visualization development platform and Visual Studio 2010 IDE development tools, through C++ language, using real people's MRI brain dataset, we realized the images 3D reconstruction and also its applications and extensions correspondingly. The display effect of the reconstructed 3D image is well and intuitive. With the related operations such as measurement, virtual dissection and so on, the good results we desired could be achieved.

The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of the site is very important in various fields of geotechnical engineering. In the field, there exist spatial variations of shear modulus that case uncertainty in the geotechnical analysis or design. So it is necessary to evaluate the spatial variation of shear wave velocities of the soil site. In this study, the HWAW method is applied to the determination of a 3-D Vs map of soil site. The HWAW method, which is based on harmonic wavelet transforms, has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. The HWAW method uses only the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity in order to minimize the effect of the noise. The field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because only one experimental setup, which consists of one pair of receivers on the surface, is needed using a short receiver spacing setup (1~3m). These characteristics make it possible to determine detailed local Vs profile in the site with lateral Vs variation and to evaluate 3-D Vs map by performing a series of tests on the grid. To estimate the applicability of the proposed method, field tests were performed. Through field applications validity and applicability of the proposed method were verified.

The chemotherapy sensitive Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) and chemotherapy resistant Lewis lung carcinoma (CR-LLC) tumors concurrently implanted in mice, and compare these findings with histological macroscopic observations against 3D reconstruction of Fluorescence Molecular Tomography (FMT) preformed in vivo on the same animals. For the 3D image reconstruction we used 32 laser source images, a flat image and 3D surface rendering that confused for 3D Fluorescence Molecular Imaging (FMI). A minimum of ten tissue sections were analyzed per tumor for quantification of the TUNEL-positive cells, cell-associated Cy5.5-Annexin and vessel-associated Alexa Fluor-Lectin. These are useful apoptosis and angiogenesis markers, and they serve as validation experiments to data obtained in vivousing a Cy5.5-Annexin V conjugate injected intravenously in chemotherapy-treated animals carrying the tumors studied histologically. We detected higher levels of apoptosis and corresponding higher levels of Cy5.5 fluorescence in the LLC vs. the CR-LLC tumors according to tissue depth and these findings confirm that in vivo staining with the Cy5.5-Annexing conjugate correlates well with in vitro TUNEL staining and is consistent with the higher apoptotic index expected from the LLC line. There appeared to be 1.38% more apoptosis for LLC than CR-LLC. Consequently there is good correlation between the histology results and in vivo fluorescence-mediated optical imaging. In conclusion the apoptotic images of 3D FMI were validated by microscopic histological image analysis. This is a significant result for the continuous progress of fluorescence 3D imaging research.

Objective: Three-dimensional rotational angiography (3D-RA) is increasingly used for the evaluation of intracranial aneurysms (IAs); however, radiation exposure to the lens is a concern. We investigated the effect of head off-centering by adjusting table height on the lens dose during 3D-RA and its feasibility in patient examination. Materials and Methods: The effect of head off-centering during 3D-RA on the lens radiation dose at various table heights was investigated using a RANDO head phantom (Alderson Research Labs). We prospectively enrolled 20 patients (58.0 ± 9.4 years) with IAs who were scheduled to undergo bilateral 3D-RA. In all patients' 3D-RA, the lens dose-reduction protocol involving elevation of the examination table was applied to one internal carotid artery, and the conventional protocol was applied to the other. The lens dose was measured using photoluminescent glass dosimeters (GD-352M, AGC Techno Glass Co., LTD), and radiation dose metrics were compared between the two protocols. Image quality was quantitatively analyzed using source images for image noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and contrast-to-noise ratio. Additionally, three reviewers qualitatively assessed the image quality using a five-point Likert scale. Results: The phantom study showed that the lens dose was reduced by an average of 38% per 1 cm increase in table height. In the patient study, the dose-reduction protocol (elevating the table height by an average of 2.3 cm) led to an 83% reduction in the median dose from 4.65 mGy to 0.79 mGy (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences between dose-reduction and conventional protocols in the kerma area product (7.34 vs. 7.40 Gy·cm2, P = 0.892), air kerma (75.7 vs. 75.1 mGy, P = 0.872), and image quality. Conclusion: The lens radiation dose was significantly affected by table height adjustment during 3D-RA. Intentional head off-centering by elevation of the table is a simple and effective way to reduce the lens dose in clinical practice.
This study aimed to quantitatively compare the diameters measured directly from the coronal plane or sagittal plane of 2D digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and the cross-sectional area-converted diameters calculated from contrast-enhanced MR (CE-MR) imaging. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 20 patients who underwent both 2D DSA and CE-MR imaging. Firstly, the venous diameters of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and transverse sinus (TS) were directly measured from 2D DSA. Subsequently, the axial planes for SSS diameter and the sagittal plane for TS in CE-MR imaging were utilized to calculate cross-sectional area-based converted diameters. The numerical values obtained from 2D DSA and CE-MR imaging were compared pairwise at each location. For SSS, the diameter measured by 2D DSA was 27% larger than the conversion-based diameter from CE-MR imaging (9.8±1.4 mm vs. 7.1±1.3 mm, P<0.05). Similarly, for the right TS, the difference was 16% (8.8±3.2 mm vs. 7.4±2.0 mm, P<0.05), and for the left TS, the difference was 22% (8.4±2.8 mm vs. 6.6±1.3 mm, P<0.05). In conclusion, the diameter measured directly in conventional 2D DSA may be larger than the diameter converted based on the cross-sectional area. Therefore, when selecting the size of the stent, it is crucial to make precise determinations while keeping this fact in mind.
Stereoscopic 3D animation contents are in the rise as a key part of contents market. Major animation studios are planning to produce 3D animations in a stereoscopic process. This study aims at understanding the visual textuality of 3D animation contents at its early stage. To understand 3D animation, , are analyzed. Stereoscopic 3D animations are exploring the new visual aesthetics using the specific storytelling, sequence ordering, camera working, shot size and camera angles etc. Based on these visual textualities, stereoscopic 3D animations are constructing telepresence, multi-senses of individual spectators. Stereoscopic 3D animations have formed their own aesthetics and cultural meanings in the digital age.
In medical imaging, three-dimensional (3D) display using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) as a portable file format can give intuitive information more efficiently on the World Wide Web (WWW). The web-based 3D visualization of functional images combined with anatomical images has not studied much in systematic ways. The goal of this study was to achieve a simultaneous observation of 3D anatomic and functional models with planar images on the WWW, providing their locational information in 3D space with a measuring implement using VRML. MRI and ictal-interictal SPECT images were obtained from one epileptic patient. Subtraction ictal SPECT co-registered to MRI (SISCOM) was performed to improve identification of a seizure focus. SISCOM image volumes were held by thresholds above one standard deviation (1-SD) and two standard deviations (2-SD). SISCOM foci and boundaries of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the MRI volume were segmented and rendered to VRML polygonal surfaces by marching cube algorithm. Line profiles of x and y-axis that represent real lengths on an image were acquired and their maximum lengths were the same as 211.67 mm. The real size vs. the rendered VRML surface size was approximately the ratio of 1 to 605.9. A VRML measuring tool was made and merged with previous VRML surfaces. User interface tools were embedded with Java Script routines to display MRI planar images as cross sections of 3D surface models and to set transparencies of 3D surface models. When transparencies of 3D surface models were properly controlled, a fused display of the brain geometry with 3D distributions of focal activated regions provided intuitively spatial correlations among three 3D surface models. The epileptic seizure focus was in the right temporal lobe of the brain. The real position of the seizure focus could be verified by the VRML measuring tool and the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus could be confirmed by MRI planar images crossing 3D surface models. The VRML application developed in this study may have several advantages. Firstly, 3D fused display and control of anatomic and functional image were achieved on the m. Secondly, the vector analysis of a 3D surface model was defined by the VRML measuring tool based on the real size. Finally, the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus was intuitively detected by correlations with MRI images. Our web based visualization of 3-D fusion image and its localization will be a help to online research and education in diagnostic radiology, therapeutic radiology, and surgery applications.

Objective: To compare digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and conventional full-field digital mammography (FFDM) in the detectability of breast cancers in patients with dense breast tissue, and to determine the influencing factors in the detection of breast cancers using the two techniques. Materials and Methods: Three blinded radiologists independently graded cancer detectability of 300 breast cancers (288 women with dense breasts) on DBT and conventional FFDM images, retrospectively. Hormone status, histologic grade, T stage, and breast cancer subtype were recorded to identify factors affecting cancer detectability. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare cancer detectability by DBT and conventional FFDM. Fisher's exact tests were used to determine differences in cancer characteristics between detectability groups. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine whether the detectability score differed according to cancer characteristics. Results: Forty breast cancers (13.3%) were detectable only with DBT; 191 (63.7%) breast cancers were detected with both FFDM and DBT, and 69 (23%) were not detected with either. Cancer detectability scores were significantly higher for DBT than for conventional FFDM (median score, 6; range, 0-6; p < 0.001). The DBT-only cancer group had more invasive lobular-type breast cancers (22.5%) than the other two groups (i.e., cancer detected on both types of image [both-detected group], 5.2%; cancer not detected on either type of image [both-non-detected group], 7.3%), and less detectability of ductal carcinoma in situ (5% vs. 16.8% [both-detected group] vs. 27.5% [both-non-detected group]). Low-grade cancers were more often detected in the DBT-only group than in the both-detected group (22.5% vs. 10%, p = 0.026). Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2)-negative cancers were more often detected in the DBT-only group than in the both-detected group (92.3% vs. 70.5%, p = 0.004). Cancers surrounded by mostly glandular tissue were detected less often in the DBT only group than in the both-non-detected group (10% vs. 31.9%, p = 0.016). DBT cancer detectability scores were significantly associated with cancer type (p = 0.012), histologic grade (p = 0.013), T and N stage (p = 0.001, p = 0.024), proportion of glandular tissue surrounding lesions (p = 0.013), and lesion type (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Invasive lobular, low-grade, or HER-2-negative cancer is more detectable with DBT than with conventional FFDM in patients with dense breasts, but cancers surrounded by mostly glandular tissue might be missed with both techniques.
