User Preference and Workload Changes According to Information Visualization Methods (정보표현방식에 따른 사용자 호의도 및 업무부하량 변화)

  • Despite the wide range of information and engineering visualization techniques available, studies in investigating the effectiveness of the techniques in visualization has been rare. The typical visualization techniques were CAD, 2D and 3D computer graphics, and virtual environment (VE) that use 3D displays of 3D. space. The objects of this study is to analyze the user preferences and workload changes according to the visualization methods of engineering drawings such as 2D CAD, 2D computer graphics, 3D computer graphics, and augmented reality which is a variation of VEs. The results showed that users preferred 3D visualization techniques to 2D visualization techniques, though there were no workloads differences. Furthermore, the 3D perspective of AR which analogies the real world could facilitate the interpretation of engineering drawings.

  • A prototype computer program was developed which visualizes various kinds of geotechnical information using 3D object graphics techniques. The program integrates various kinds of geotechnical data such as surface geology map, boreholes data, geophysical data as well as man made subsurface structures. It also reads NGIS DXF map and generates digital elevation model from iso-elevation line layer of the DXF map. All the data are put into a 3D model as 3D objects. The created 3D model can be viewed and analysed in a interactive 3D way.

  • A ship handling simulator is popular means of preventing marine accidents caused by human error. It can also be used to train navigators. A real-time 3D visualization system, a component of a ship handling simulator, is an important component, as realistic and intuitive image generation play an essential role in improving the effects of education using ship handling simulators. This paper discusses the design of a new real-time 3D visualization system based on an open source 3D graphics engine as well as its implementation. The developed real-time 3D visualization system satisfies the operational requirements derived in terms of visualization functionalities, reuse of legacy graphic data, and interoperability with other systems constituting a ship handling simulator. This system has an architecture in which new functionalities are easily added.

  • In this paper, we present a virtual tourist system with realtime 3D visualization and the assistance of context information service. Our system enables a visitor to take a discovering tour on a virtual environment from a remote client by following navigator or by self-navigating. During the tour, the system provides immersive 3D graphics contents while supporting relevant information to the visitors corresponding to their positions in the virtual environment. When the visitors interact with interested objects, the context information service will also support introduction information for presenting about the objects. The introduction information based on text format is represented by a comfortable way-audio conversion to visitors in different languages depended on their preferences using TTS(Text-To-Speak) tool.

  • This paper presents a new windows application based on 3-D graphics and Text-To-Speech (TTS) for effective management of substation equipment. When problems in a power system occur, inexperienced power system operators may have difficulty in understanding the situation as well as finding suitable countermeasures quickly. This paper addresses an effective scheme to visualizing power system equipment under normal and abnormal conditions using 3-D graphics and animations. In addition, the state variations and the order of maintenance priority of substation equipment are represented by TTS and intuitive methods. The proposed system can help power system operators to more quickly understand the state of power system equipment, and it can provide operators with the suitable countermeasures for minimizing damage caused by equipment problems.

  • Analysis of 3-dimensional (3D) protein structure plays an important role of structural bioinformatics. The protein structure visualization is the one of the structural bioinformatics and the most fundamental problem. As the number of known protein structure increases rapidly and the study of protein-protein interaction is prevalent, the fast visualization of large scale protein structure becomes essential. The fast protein structure visualization system we proposed is sophisticated and well designed visualization system using geometry instancing technique. Because this system is optimized for recent 3D graphics hardware using geometry instancing technique, its rendering speed is faster than other visualization tools.

  • Visualization of 2D and 3D data, which arises from some scientific phenomena, physical model or mathematical formula, in the form of curve or surface view is one of the important topics in Computer Graphics. The problem gets critically important when data possesses some inherent shape feature. For example, it may have positive feature in one instance and monotone in the other. This paper is concerned with the solution of similar problems when data has convex shape and its visualization is required to have similar inherent features to that of data. A rational cubic function [5] has been used for the review of visualization of 2D data. After that it has been generalized for the visualization of 3D data. Moreover, simple sufficient constraints are made on the free parameters in the description of rational bicubic functions to visualize the 3D convex data in the view of convex surfaces.

  • 3D 그래픽스 환경에서 입체적인 물체가 2D 모니터에 보여지는 과정에는 여러 단계의 공간 변환과 행렬 계산을 거치게 된다. 이러한 공간 변환은 각 단계가 어떤 의미인지 쉽게 이해하기에 어려운 면이 있다. 본 논문에서는 유니티 3D 엔진에서 작동하는 셰이더를 통해 각 단계의 공간을 시각화 하여 학생들이 보다 쉽게 공간 변환을 이해하는 시각화 방법을 제시한다.

  • A graphic vehicle modeling pre-processing program and a visualization post-processing program have been developed for AutoDyn7, which is a special program for vehicle dynamics. The Rapid-App for GUI(Graphic User Interface) builder and the Open Inventor for 3D graphic library have been employed to develop these programs in Silicon Graphics workstation. A Graphic User Interface program integrates vehicle modeling pre-processor, AutoDyn7 analysis processor, and visualization post-processor. In vehicle modeling pre-processor, vehicle hard point data for a suspension model are automatically converted into multibody vehicle system data. An interactive graphics capabilities provides suspension modeling aides to verify user input data interactively. In visualization post-processor, vehicle virtual test simulation results are animated with virtual testing environments.

3D Visualization of Discrete Event Simulation and Its Applications in Virtual Manufacturing

  • This paper presents a new approach to create 3D visualization from discrete simulation results. This approach connects discrete event simulation directly to 3D animation with its novel methods that analyze and convert discrete simulation results into animation events to trigger 3D animation. In addition, it constructs a 3D animation framework for the visualization of discrete simulation results. This framework supports the reuse of both the existing 3D animation objects and behavior components, and allows the rapid development of new 3D animation objects by users with no special knowledge in computer graphics. This approach has been implemented with the software component technology. As an application in virtual manufacturing, visualizations of an electronics assembly factory are also provided in the paper to demonstrate the performance of this new approach.
