  • Flexible pavement responses to vehicular loading, such as critical stresses and strains, in each pavement layer, could be predicted by the multilayered elastic analysis. However, multilayered elastic theory suffers from major drawbacks including spatial dimension of a numerical model, material properties considered in the analysis, boundary conditions, and ill-presentation of tire-pavement contact shape and stresses. To overcome these shortcomings, three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) models are developed and numerical analyses are conducted to calculate pavement responses to moving load in this study. This paper introduces a methodology for an effective 3D FE to simulate flexible pavement structure. It also discusses the mesh development and boundary condition analysis. Sensitivity analyses of flexible pavement response to loading are conducted. The infinite boundary conditions and time-dependent history of calculated pavement responses are considered in the analysis. This study found that the outcome of 3D FE implicit dynamic analysis of flexible pavement that utilizes appropriate boundary conditions, continuous moving load, viscoelastic hot-mix asphalt model is comparable to field measurements.

  • Two kinds of steels whose compositions were Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) were centrifugally cast, and oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 50-350 h in order to find the effect of sulfur on the high-temperature oxidation of Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) alloys. These alloys formed oxide scales that consisted primarily of $Cr_2O_3$ as the major oxide and $Cr_2MnO_4$ as the minor one through preferential oxidation of Cr and Mn. They additionally formed $SiO_2$ particles around the scale/alloy interface as well as inside the matrices. The high affinity of Mn with S led to the formation of scattered MnS inclusions particularly in the 0.35S-containing cast alloy. Sulfur was harmful to the oxidation resistance, because it deteriorated the scale/alloy adherence so as to accerelate the adherence and compactness of the formed scales.

  • The effect of Co and annealing temperature on the magnetic properties, phase change and microstructure of melt-spun $(Nd_{14.73}Fe_{78.67}B_{6.60})_{100-x}Co_x$ (X=0, 1, 2, 3) ribbons has been studied. The Co containing ribbons were found to have higher coercivity ($_iH_c$) than the ribbons without Co. Intrinsic coercivity of 20.3 kOe has been obtained by addition of 2 at%Co. This effect by Co addition is also represented in the case of hot pressed and die-upseted magnets. The maximum intrinsic coercivities of hot press and die-upset $(Nd_{14.73}Fe_{78.67}B_{6.60})_{100- x}Co_x$ (X=0, 1, 2, 3) magnets are 16.9 kOe and 15.2 kOe when X=2.

  • In this paper, an axial type brushless DC motor which has double rotors using rare-earth magnet pieces is designed. This kind of motor has shorter axial length and is easier to assemble than the radial type motors. To get enough torque, NdFeB magnet is used and for the cost of production, the magnets are segmented to rectangle or disk shape. To design this motor, a equivalent circuit is adopted and the air-gap density is calculated using 3D finite element method to get exact parameters. The design variables are optimized with genetic algorithm. From the results of the simulations, the reference of the axial type BLDC motors can be obtained.

  • The paper presents an investigation into the mode conversion and scattering characteristics of guided waves at delaminations in laminated composite beams. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model, which is experimentally verified using data measured by 3D scanning laser vibrometer, is used in the investigation. The study consists of two parts. The first part investigates the excitability of the fundamental anti-symmetric mode ($A_0$) of guided wave in laminated composite beams. It is found that there are some unique phenomena, which do not exist for guided waves in plate structures, make the analysis become more complicated. The phenomena are observed in numerical study using 3D FE simulations. In the second part, several delaminated composite beams are studied numerically to investigate the mode conversion and scattering characteristics of the $A_0$ guided wave at delaminations. Different sizes, locations and through-thickness locations of the delaminations are investigated in detail. The mode conversion and scattering phenomena of guided waves at the delaminations are studied by calculating reflection and transmission coefficients. The results show that the sizes, locations and through-thickness locations of the delaminations have significant effects on the scattering characteristics of guided waves at the delaminations. The results of this research would provide better understanding of guided waves propagation and scattering at the delaminations in the laminated composite beams, and improve the performance of guided wave damage detection methods.

  • When performing stress analysis for a nozzle in nuclear power plants, the nozzle loads should be determined conservatively. Existing stress analysis report of 3-D nozzle loads in nuclear power plants often provide only load magnitude not the sign (direction). Since calculated stress distribution depends on load direction, determining critical load directions for conservative stress analysis is crucial. In this study, an efficient method for determining critical load directions in nozzle loads is proposed. In the proposed method, stresses are firstly calculated using elastic finite element (FE) analysis for the uni-axial load in each direction. Then stress distributions for the multi-axial loads are analytically calculated using the principle of superposition. The calculated stress values are verified by comparing with FE analysis results under multi-axial loading. By using this method, the complex task of determining conservative load directions can be simplified.

  • In order to increase the coercivity of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets without much reduction of remanence, small amount of Dy compounds such as $Dy_2O_3$ and $DyF_3$ was mixed with (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B powder. After mixing, the coercivity of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets apparently increased with the increase of Dy compound in the mixture. Addition of $DyF_3$ was more effective than $Dy_2O_3$ for the improvement of coercivity. Reduction of the remanence by the addition of Dy compound, however, was larger than expected mostly due to unresolved coarse Dy compound in the magnet. EPMA analysis revealed that Dy was diffused throughout the grains in the magnet mixed with $DyF_3$ whereas Dy was rather concentrated around grain boundaries in the magnet mixed with $Dy_2O_3$.

  • In this study, horse spleen apoferritins were induced to form biominerals using up to 3000 Fe atoms per protein molecule. The morphology and crystallinity of the nanometer-sized biominerals formed in the ferritins were then analyzed using field emission-energy filtering-transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM). The ferritins were found to have reconstitution yields of 60-70% in the experiments. The mean core size of the ferritins varied somewhat with protein concentrations, indicating that crystal growth in ferritins could be controlled via protein concentrations. The core mineral size increased with the amount of Fe used. Lattice fringes of the core, associated with good crystallinity, were found in all samples. The lattice fringe images of a single domain ferrihydrite mineral appeared frequently in the (011) planes (d-spacing of 0.246 nm) under [100] zone axis in all samples of this study. In addition, the lattice image occasionally revealed fringes corresponding to the (100) planes (d = 0.254 nm) from the [001] zone axis, indicating the characteristic pattern of hexagonal crystal lattice. Diffraction patterns in the minerals identified as ferrihydrite were fitted well into the space group of $P3_{1c}$.

  • The artificial sewage was treated using a vertical flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The artificial sewage was fec into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load 314 L/$m^2$ \ulcorner day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 cm and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolites ; 0.5~1 mm and 1~3 mm in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was CO$D_{Cr}$ 95.1%, T-N 49.5%, $NH{_4^+}$-N 99.4% and T-9 56.4%. T-N removal efficiency decreaced remarkably from 73 to 27% with the operating time. Most of T-P was adsorbed in the uper area of the reed bed. The major portion of adsorbed phosphorus was composed of Fe-, Ca- and reductant selubele Fe-P.

  • Both manufacturing parameters and particles' chemical composition controll coercivity and its distribution of magnetic particles. The coercivity and its distribution are important properties for high density magnetic recording, so these are used as tool for evaluation of reproducibility of magnetic particles. We report in this paper the applications of dM/dH versus H curve, which is derived from magnetic hysteresis loop, to the evaluation of coercivity distribution of magnetic particles and oxidation studies of recording metal particles. The coercivity distri-bution can be estimated from the full width half rnaximun (FWHM) and the peak shape of the dM/dH versus H curve. The peak shape of the curve depends upon distribution of particles' coercivity. The peak of dM/dH versus H curve becomes broad and lor is splitted into two or rmre peaks. It depends on uniformity of particles' coercivity. When the coercivity difference between Ba-Ferrite and ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ is larger than 600 Oe, the peak becomes broad and is consequently splitted into two peaks. Ununiformly substituted Ba-Ferrite particles show broad peak. It is apparent that the analysis of the curve is one of sensitive measuring techniques for determination of coercivity distri-bution and studies on magnetic properties of substituted Ba-Ferrite and oxidation of magnetic recording metal particles.
