Robust Radiometric and Geometric Correction Methods for Drone-Based Hyperspectral Imaging in Agricultural Applications

  • Drone-mounted hyperspectral sensors (DHSs) have revolutionized remote sensing in agriculture by offering a cost-effective and flexible platform for high-resolution spectral data acquisition. Their ability to capture data at low altitudes minimizes atmospheric interference, enhancing their utility in agricultural monitoring and management. This study focused on addressing the challenges of radiometric and geometric distortions in preprocessing drone-acquired hyperspectral data. Radiometric correction, using the empirical line method (ELM) and spectral reference panels, effectively removed sensor noise and variations in solar irradiance, resulting in accurate surface reflectance values. Notably, the ELM correction improved reflectance for measured reference panels by 5-55%, resulting in a more uniform spectral profile across wavelengths, further validated by high correlations (0.97-0.99), despite minor deviations observed at specific wavelengths for some reflectors. Geometric correction, utilizing a rubber sheet transformation with ground control points, successfully rectified distortions caused by sensor orientation and flight path variations, ensuring accurate spatial representation within the image. The effectiveness of geometric correction was assessed using root mean square error(RMSE) analysis, revealing minimal errors in both east-west(0.00 to 0.081 m) and north-south directions(0.00 to 0.076 m).The overall position RMSE of 0.031 meters across 100 points demonstrates high geometric accuracy, exceeding industry standards. Additionally, image mosaicking was performed to create a comprehensive representation of the study area. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the applied preprocessing techniques and highlight the potential of DHSs for precise crop health monitoring and management in smart agriculture. However, further research is needed to address challenges related to data dimensionality, sensor calibration, and reference data availability, as well as exploring alternative correction methods and evaluating their performance in diverse environmental conditions to enhance the robustness and applicability of hyperspectral data processing in agriculture.

Prediction of East Asian Brain Age using Machine Learning Algorithms Trained With Community-based Healthy Brain MRI

  • Background and Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helps with brain development analysis and disease diagnosis. Brain volumes measured from different ages using MRI provides useful information in clinical evaluation and research. Therefore, we trained machine learning models that predict the brain age gap of healthy subjects in the East Asian population using T1 brain MRI volume images. Methods: In total, 154 T1-weighted MRIs of healthy subjects (55-83 years of age) were collected from an East Asian community. The information of age, gender, and education level was collected for each participant. The MRIs of the participants were preprocessed using FreeSurfer(https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/) to collect the brain volume data. We trained the models using different supervised machine learning regression algorithms from the scikit-learn (https://scikit-learn.org/) library. Results: The trained models comprised 19 features that had been reduced from 55 brain volume labels. The algorithm BayesianRidge (BR) achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) and r squared (R2) of 3 and 0.3 years, respectively, in predicting the age of the new subjects compared to other regression methods. The results of feature importance analysis showed that the right pallidum, white matter hypointensities on T1-MRI scans, and left hippocampus comprise some of the essential features in predicting brain age. Conclusions: The MAE and R2 accuracies of the BR model predicting brain age gap in the East Asian population showed that the model could reduce the dimensionality of neuroimaging data to provide a meaningful biomarker for individual brain aging.

  • 현장에서 콘크리트 구조물의 균열 깊이를 추정하기 위한 자기 보정 표면파 투과 측정과 측정된 투과 함수의 차단주파수를 이용하는 기존의 방법은 측정 조건에 따른 투과 함수의 변동성이 매우 커서 실제로 적용하기가 어려운 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 차단주파수와 같이 특정 주파수를 선정하여 균열 깊이를 추정하는 방법 대신에 측정된 자기 보정 표면파 투과 함수 자체를 균열 깊이 추정에 이용하는 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 다양한 균열 깊이에서 측정된 자기 보정 표면파 투과 함수를 주성분 분석법을 이용하여 차원을 축소한 후, 축소된 투과 함수를 인공신경망의 입력으로 사용하여 이로부터 균열 깊이를 추정하는 방법을 제시하였다. 한편, 제안된 방법의 유효성을 판단하기 위하여 서로 다른 균열 깊이를 가진 5개의 실험체에 대하여 실험적인 연구를 수행하였으며, 실험 결과 제안된 방법이 콘크리트 구조물이 균열 질이 평가에 매우 유효한 방법임을 알 수 있었다.

졸-겔법으로 제조한 ZrO2·SiO2계 결정화 유리의 결정화 및 파괴인성에 관한 연구 (A Study of Crystallization and Fracture Toughness of Glass Ceramics in the ZrO2·SiO2 Systems Prepared by the Sol-Gel Method)

  • Precursor gels with the composition of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems (x=10, 20 and 30 mol%) were prepared by the sol-gel method. Kinetic parameters, such as activation energy, Avrami's exponent, n, and dimensionality crystal growth value, m, have been simultaneously calculated from the DTA data using Kissinger and Matusita equations. The crystallite size dependence on tetragonal to monoclinic transformation of $ZrO_2$ was investigated using XRD, in relation to the fracture toughness. The crystallization of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ occurred through 3-dimensional diffusion controlled growth(n=m=2) and the activation energy for crystallization was calculated using Kissinger and Matusita equations, as about $310{\sim}325{\pm}10kJ/mol$. The growth of $t-ZrO_2$, in proportion to the cube of radius, increased with increasing heating temperature and heat-treatment time. It was suggested that the diffusion of Zr4+ions by Ostwald ripening was rate-limiting process for the growth of $t-ZrO_2$ crystallite size. The fracture toughness of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems glass ceramics increased with increasing crystallite size of $t-ZrO_2$. The fracture toughness of $30ZrO_2{\cdot}70SiO_2$ system glass ceramics heated at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 5 h was $4.84Mpam^{1/2}$ at a critical crystaliite size of 40 nm.

  • 복식은 조형적 구성의 측면에서 그시대의 예술양식을 수용, 표출한다. 최근에 이르러서는 복식과 예술분야가 통합적 조형양식으로 존재하면서 동시대적 사상이나 이슈를 반영할 뿐 아니라 여타 문화현상들과 상호의존적 또는 상호수정보완적 관계를 유지하고 있다. 따라서 일련의 전위적인 디자이너들에 의해 시도되고 있는 아방가르드적 현상으로서 해체주의적 현상을 밝힘은 그동안 논의되왔던 조형양식적 측면과 미학적 측면에서의 복식을 재조명하는 그 의의가 있다. 해체주의 패션은 모더니즘적 양식을 반박하여 형식이나 구성에 있어 전위가 몰형식과 비구조화의 형태를 띄고 있으며 그것은 외형적 구조로서만이 아니라 인식론이나 내재론적 측면에서도 이성적 주체관, 현전의 형이상학, 이분법적 사고의 붕괴 둥을 의미하는 것으로 현대패션이라는 커다란 흐름을 고유함으로써 상호보완적인 역할을 수행하고 있다. 즉 양식의 이종교배, 과거양식의 인식, 복합성과 모호성, 다양한 매체의 이용 등과 같은 패션 트랜드 속에서 재해석되고 변경, 수용되어 존재하고 있다고 할 수 있다.

중심이동과 신경망 기반 주요성분분석을 이용한 얼굴인식 (Face Recognitions Using Centroid Shift and Neural Network-based Principal Component Analysis)

  • 본 논문에서는 영상의 1차 모멘트와 단층신경망에 기반을 둔 주요성분분석을 이용한 얼굴인식 기법을 제안하였다. 여기서 1차 모멘트는 입력되는 얼굴영상의 중심이동을 위한 것으로 차원을 감소시켜 얼굴인식에 불필요한 배경을 배제시키기 위함이다. 또한 단층신경망을 이용한 주요성분분석은 수치적 기법의 대안으로 Foldiak 학습알고리즘을 이용하며, 차원을 감소시켜 얼굴영상의 특징추출을 위한 정규직교기저를 얻기 위함이다. 제안된 기법을 64$\ast$64 픽셀의 48개(12명$\ast$4장) 학습자 얼굴영상을 대상으로 city-block, Euclidean, 그리고 negative angle의 각 거리 척도를 분류척도로 이용하여 실험하였다. 실험결과, 제안된 기법은 우수한 인식성능이 있음을 확인하였다. 특히 negative angle를 이용하는 것이 city-block이나 Euclidean을 이용하는 것보다 상대적으로 정확하게 유사성을 측정할 수 있었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 벡터 공간 모델과 HAL (Hyperspace Analog to Language)을 적용해서 단어 의미 유사성을 군집한다. 일정한 크기의 문맥을 통해서 단어 간의 상관성을 측정하는 HAL을 도입하고(Lund and Burgess 1996), 상관성 측정에서 고빈도와 저빈도에 다르게 측정되는 왜곡을 줄이기 위해서 벡터 공간 모델을 적용해서 단어 쌍의 코사인 유사도를 측정하였다(Salton et al. 1975, Widdows 2004). HAL과 벡터 공간 모델로 만들어지는 공간은 다차원이므로, 차원을 축소하기 위해서 PCA (Principal Component Analysis)와 SVD (Singular Value Decomposition)를 적용하였다. 유사성 군집을 위해서 비감독 방식과 감독 방식을 적용하였는데, 비감독 방식에는 클러스터링을 감독 방식에는 SVM (Support Vector Machine), 나이브 베이즈 구분자(Naive Bayes Classifier), 최대 엔트로피(Maximum Entropy) 방식을 적용하였다. 이 연구는 언어학적 측면에서 Harris (1954), Firth (1957)의 분포 가설(Distributional Hypothesis)을 활용한 의미 유사도를 측정하였으며, 심리언어학적 측면에서 의미 기억을 설명하기 위한 모델로 벡터 공간 모델과 HAL을 결합하였으며, 전산적 언어 처리 관점에서 기계학습 방식 중 감독 기반과 비감독 기반을 적용하였다.

  • The power of semiconductor laser diodes has been limited primarily by the heating effects which occur at high optical intensities. The actual limiting event can take one of a number of forms such as. catastrophic optical damage or filamentation. A general approach to this problem is to design a heterostructure which creates a high powered output while maintaining low internal optical intensities. A graded index separate confinement heterostructure (GRIN-SCH) is one such structure that accomplishes the above task. Here, the active region is sandwiched between graded index layers where the index of refraction increases nearer to the active layer. This structure has been shown to yield a high efficiency due to the confinement of both the optical power and carriers, thereby reducing the optical intensity required to achieve higher powers. The optical confinement also reinforces the optical beam quality against high power effects. Quantum dots have long been a desirable option for laser diodes due to the enhanced optical properties associated with the zeroth dimensionality. In our work, we use PICS3D software created by Crosslight Software Inc. to simulate the performance of In0.67A10.33As/A10.2Ga0.8AsquantumdotsusedwithaGRIN-SCH. The simulation tools are used to optimize the GRIN-SCH structure for high efficiency and optical beam quality.

Exploring Concurrent Validity and Item Level Analysis for Two Korean Versions of Health-Related Quality of Life Instrument: EQ-5D vs. WHOQOL-BREF

  • Background: Cross-culturally adapted questionnaires may not be comparable to their original version. Objects: To examine concurrent validity of two health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments for the Korean versions of EuroQOL-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) and the abbreviated version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument. Methods: A total of 139 cancer survivors from two rehabilitation institutes was recruited. All participants were registered for palliative rehabilitation care. Both instruments were concurrently administered by health care providers following the second bout of the rehabilitation cares. Rasch partial credit model and Spearman's correlation analysis were used to investigate: 1) dimensionality, 2) hierarchical item difficulty, and 3) concurrent validity using correlations between two instruments. Results: For the WHOQOL-BREF, all items except negative feeling, pain, dependence of medical aid, were found to be acceptable, while all items of EQ-5D were acceptable. There was an evidence of negative correlations between EQ-5D and 4 domains of WHOQOL-BREF. Two correlations were strong (EQ-5D vs. physical health domain, ρ = -0.610, 95% CI = -0.716 to -0.475) and moderate (EQ-5D vs. psychosocial domain, ρ = -0.402, 95% CI = -0.546 to -0.236). Other two correlations were weak (EQ-5D vs. social relationship and environmental domains, ρ = -0.242, 95% CI = -0.401 to -0.075 and ρ = -0.364, 95% CI = -0.514 to -0.207, respectively). Item difficulty calibrations of the two measurements were ranged from -0.84 to 0.86 for the EQ-5D and -1.07 to 1.06 for the WHOQOL-BREF. Conclusion: The study provides some supports for the concurrent validity of the two Korean versions of HRQOL instrument, with evidences of weak to strong correlations between the EQ-5D and four domains of the WHOQOL-BREF applied to various cancer survivors. Additionally, the cancer survivors appeared to have more of a tendency to view the EQ-5D items as being slightly more challenging than the WHOQOL-BREF items.

Polymorphisms of XRCC1 and XRCC2 DNA Repair Genes and Interaction with Environmental Factors Influence the Risk of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in Northeast India

  • Multiple genetic and environmental factors have been reported to play key role in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Here, we investigated interactions of XRCC1 Arg399Gln and XRCC2 Arg188His polymorphisms and environmental factors in modulating susceptibility to NPC in Northeast India. One-hundred NPC patients, 90 first-degree relatives of patients and 120 controls were enrolled in the study. XRCC1 Arg399Gln and XRCC2 Arg188His polymorphisms were determined using PCR-RFLP, and the results were confirmed by DNA sequencing. Logistic regression (LR) and multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) approaches were applied for statistical analysis. The XRCC1 Gln/Gln genotype showed increased risk (OR=2.76; P<0.024) of NPC. However, individuals with both XRCC1 and XRCC2 polymorphic variants had 3.2 fold elevated risk (P<0.041). An enhanced risk of NPC was also observed in smoked meat (OR=4.07; P=0.004) and fermented fish consumers (OR=4.34, P=0.001), and tobacco-betel quid chewers (OR=7.00; P=0.0001) carrying XRCC1 polymorphic variants. However, smokers carrying defective XRCC1 gene showed the highest risk (OR = 7.47; P<0.0001). On MDR analysis, the best model for NPC risk was the five-factor model combination of XRCC1 variant genotype, fermented fish, smoked meat, smoking and chewing (CVC=10/10; TBA=0.636; P<0.0001); whereas in interaction entropy graphs, smoked meat and tobacco chewing showed synergistic interactions with XRCC1. These findings suggest that interaction of genetic and environmental factors might increase susceptibility to NPC in Northeast Indian populations.
