  • Sloshing of LNG cargo can cause high impact loads on the supporting and containing structures. This is particularly critical for membrane-type tanks since these will have flat surfaces and corner regions which can lead to increased peak pressures for sloshing impacts. The membrane-type containment system is much more flexible compared to the steel hull structure. As a result, fluid-structure interaction plays an important role in the structural analysis of the containment system under sloshing load. This study is based on the direct calculation method of applying sloshing loads to the KC-1 basic insulation system using finite element analysis. The structural analysis of KC-1 basic insulation system considers the dashpot as fluid-structure interaction between liquid cargo and the LNG containment system. The maximum stress of the polyurethane form for KC-1 insulation system is 1.5 times lower than one without dashpot.

  • Nanopatterning is one of the essential nanotechnologies to fabricate electronic and energy nanodevices. Therefore, many research group members made a lot of efforts to develop simple and useful nanopatterning methods to obtain highly ordered nanostructures with functionality. In this study, in order to achieve pattern formation of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures, we introduce a simple and useful patterning method (nano-transfer printing (n-TP) process) consisting of various linewidths for diverse materials. Pt and $WO_3$ hybrid line structures were successfully stacked on a flexible polyimide substrate as a multi-layered hybrid 3D pattern of Pt/WO3/Pt with line-widths of $1{\mu}m$, $1{\mu}m$ and 250 nm, respectively. This simple approach suggests how to fabricate multiscale hybrid nanostructures composed of multiple materials. In addition, functional hybrid nanostructures can be expected to be applicable to various next-generation electronic devices, such as nonvolatile memories and energy harvesters.

  • In this work, the coplanar waveguide is fabricated on a PES (poly[ether sulfone]) substrate for application to a flexible monolithic microwave integrated circuit, and its RF characteristics were thoroughly investigated. The quality factor of the coplanar waveguide on PES is 40.3 at a resonance frequency of 46.7 GHz. A fishbone-type transmission line (FTTL) structure is also fabricated on the PES substrate, and its RF characteristics are investigated. The wavelength of the FTTL on PES is 5.11 mm at 20 GHz, which is 55% of the conventional coplanar waveguide on PES. Using the FTTL, an impedance transformer is fabricated on PES. The size of the impedance transformer is $0.318mm{\times}0.318mm$, which is 69.2% of the size of the transformer fabricated by the conventional coplanar waveguide on PES. The impedance transformer showed return loss values better than -12.9 dB from 5 GHz to 50 GHz and an insertion loss better than -1.13 dB in the same frequency range.

  • The heating element utilizing the Joule heating generated when current flows through a conductor is widely researched and developed for various industrial applications such as moisture removal in automotive windshield, high-speed train windows, and solar panels. Recently, research utilizing heating elements with various nanostructures has been actively conducted to develop flexible heating elements capable of maintaining stable heating even under mechanical deformation conditions. In this study, flexible polyurethane possessing excellent flexibility was selected as the substrate, and silver (Ag) thin films with low electrical resistivity (1.6 μΩ-cm) were fabricated as the heating layer using magnetron sputtering. The 2D heating structure of the Ag thin films demonstrated excellent heating reproducibility, reaching 95% of the target temperature within 20 seconds. Furthermore, excellent heating characteristics were maintained even under mechanically deforming environments, exhibiting outstanding flexibility with less than a 3% increase in electrical resistance observed in repetitive bending tests (10,000 cycles, based on a curvature radius of 5 mm). This demonstrates that polyurethane/Ag planar heating structure bears promising potential as a flexible/wearable heating element for curved-shaped appliances and objects subjected to diverse stresses such as human body parts.

  • In the global ship structure and vibration analysis, the FE(finite element) analysis model is required in the early design stage before the 3D CAD model is defined. And the analysis model generation process is a time-consuming job and takes much more time than the engineering work itself. In particular, ship structure has too many associated structural members such as stringers, stiffness and girders etc. These structural members should be satisfied as the constraints in analysis modeling. Therefore it is necessary to support generation of analysis model with satisfying these constraints as an automatic manner. For the effective support of the global ship analysis modeling, a method to generate analysis model using initial design information within ship design process, that hull form offset data and compartment data, is developed. In order to easily handle initial design information and FE model information, flexible data structure is proposed. An automatic quadrilateral mesh generation algorithm using initial design information to satisfy the constraints imposed on the ship structure is also proposed. The proposed data structure and mesh generation algorithm are applied for the various type of vessels for the usability test. Through this test, we have verified the stability and usefulness of this system including mesh generation algorithm.

  • The 3D numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the settlement behavior of flexible mat foundations subjected to vertical loads. Special attention is given to the improved analytical method (YS-MAT) that reflects the mat flexibility and soil spring coupling effect. The soil model captures the stiffness of the soil springs as well as the shear interaction between the soil springs. The proposed method has been validated by comparing the results with other numerical approaches and field measurements on mat foundation. Through comparative studies, the proposed analytical method was in relatively good agreement with them and capable of predicting the behavior of the mat foundations.

  • Harmonic drives have attracted increasing attention with the development of materials, parts, and related equipment. Harmonic drives exhibit high deceleration, high accuracy, and light weight. The stiffness of flexible splines according to the radial load is studied using a commercial FEM program to design the structure of the flexible spline and finite element to improve the weight and price competitiveness of harmonic drives. In addition, several studies have measured and compared friction coefficients based on 3D printed tread patterns. However, owing to the characteristics of plastic materials, a decrease in stiffness in the radial direction is inevitable. To prevent a decrease in stiffness in the radial direction, we designed and manufactured flex splines with a wrinkle shape. Through structural analysis, the reaction force and stiffness in the radial direction were determined. In addition, the maximum angle of the mound was derived by theoretical calculations, and the performance of the harmonic drive was compared with the results obtained in the mound experiment. Structural analysis shows that the shape of wrinkles decreased the stress and reaction force and increased the safety factor in comparison with that of the circular shape. During performance verification through continuous experiments, the developed harmonic drive showed continuous performance similar to that of an actual tank model. It is expected that the flex spline with a compliant spring and wrinkle shape will prevent a decrease in the radial stiffness.

  • Although the horizontal component of an earthquake response can be significantly reduced through the use of conventional seismic isolators, the vertical component of excitation is still transmitted directly into the structure. Records from instrumented structures, and some recent tests and analyses have actually seen increases in vertical responses in base isolated structures under the combined effects of horizontal and vertical ground motions. This issue becomes a great concern to facilities such as a Nuclear Power Plants (NPP), with specialized equipment and machinery that is not only expensive, but critical to safe operation. As such, there is considerable interest worldwide in vertical and three-dimensional (3D) isolation systems. This paper examines several vertical and 3D isolation systems that have been proposed and their potential application to modern nuclear facilities. In particular, a series of case study analyses of a modern NPP model are performed to examine the benefits and challenges associated with 3D isolation compared with horizontal isolation. It was found that compared with the general horizontal isolators, isolators that have vertical frequencies of no more than 3 Hz can effectively reduce the vertical in-structure responses for the studied NPP model. Among the studied cases, the case that has a vertical isolation frequency of 3 Hz is the one that can keep the horizontal period of the isolators as the first period while having the most flexible vertical isolator properties. When the vertical frequency of isolators reduces to 1 Hz, the rocking effect is obvious and rocking restraining devices are necessary.

  • In this paper, the reduced size in horizontal sizes of the narrow band pass filter (BPF) with λg/4 short stub using S shaped folded coupling structure is presented. This BPF with narrow bandwidth show flexible bandwidth with variation of the position of the stubs using the Qe(external quality factor) without changing the impedance value. On the other hand, by replacing the horizontal quarter-wavelength transmission lines with the equivalent S shaped coupled line, the BPF with reduced the size of horizontal can be realized. The proposed BPF shows the insertion loss of 1.46 dB and the return loss of 16.5 dB with bandwidth of 3.4 % at the center frequency of 5.8 GHz, respectively.

  • The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.
