  • To study the effect of the macroscopic TVLEM(Three Vertical Line Element Model) which is developed in 2D, a bearing wall system is selected and 2D and 3D pushover analyses are carried out. In 2D model, the participating width of a flage wall to lateral resistance is modelled based on Paulay's effective width. From the comparisons of roof displacements, 2D model which uses the effective width of flange wall has better prediction and less analysis time than 3D model which has intrinsically the full width of the flange that causes higher stiffness and strength and shorter deformation capacity than 2D model.

  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cell technology uses powder processes to produce electrodes with residual porosity by partially sintering a mixture of electronically and ionically conducting particles. We model porous fuel cell electrodes with 3D packings of monosized spherical particles. These packings are created by numerical sintering. Each particle-particle contact is characteristic for an ionic, electronic or electrochemical resistance. The numerical packing is then discretized into a resistor network which is solved by using Kirchhoff's current law to evaluate the electrode's electrochemical performance. We investigate in particular percolation effects in functionally graded electrodes as compared to other types of electrodes.

  • UK National Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL's) version of the ENIGMA fuel performance code is described, including details of the development history, the system modelled, the key assumptions, the thermo-mechanical solution scheme, and the various incorporated models. The recent development of ENIGMA in the areas of whole core analysis and dry storage applications is then discussed. With respect to the former, the NEXUS code has been developed by NNL to automate whole core fuel performance modelling for an LWR core, using ENIGMA as the underlying fuel performance engine. NEXUS runs on NNL's GEMSTONE high performance computing cluster and utilises 3-D core power distribution data obtained from the output of Studsvik Scandpower's SIMULATE code. With respect to the latter, ENIGMA has been developed such that it can model the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a given LWR fuel rod during irradiation, pond cooling, drying, and dry storage - this involved: (a) incorporating an out-of-pile clad creep model for irradiated Zircaloy-4; (b) including the ability to simulate annealing out of the clad irradiation damage; (c) writing of additional post-irradiation output; (d) several other minor modifications to allow modelling of post-irradiation conditions.

  • In this erratum, we correct a mistake in the proof of Proposition 2.7. In fact the equivalence (3) ⇐ (4) "R is a quasi-regular ring if and only if R is a reduced ring and every principal ideal contained in Z(R) is a 0-ideal" does not hold as we only have Rx ⊆ O(S).

  • The paper deals with the finite element modelling of the free vibration and structural behavior of a particular four-floor reinforced concrete structure subjected to static equivalent seismic loads and supported by a shallow foundation system called SNSF (Spider Net System Footing). The two FE models are a simple 2D Matlab model and a detailed 3D model based on solid elastic elements using Altairworks (Hypermesh and Optistruct). Both models can simulate the soil structure interaction. We concentrate on the behavior of a representative cell involving two columns on five levels. The influence of the boundary conditions on the external vertical planes of the domain are duly studied. The Matlab model appears relevant for a primary estimation of frequencies and stiffness of the whole structure under vertical and lateral loads.

  • Acquisition of 3D points is an essential process for modelling of physical 3D objects. Although Coordinate Measuring Machine(CMM) is most accurate for this purpose, it is very time consuming. To enhance the data aquisition speed for scuptured surfaces, active vision with reflecctometric method was used for our system. A fter the data acquisition, the system automatically generates cutting tool path for the 3-axis milling of the object. The fullyintegrated system from the data acquisition to the NC-code generation was implemented with IBN-PC/386 and necessary hardwears.

  • The adsorption behaviour of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite in Ca-Na-Cl solutions has been studied utilizing adsorption experiments and surface complexation modelling. Adsorption kinetic experiments allude to steady-state adsorption periods after 7 days for granite and 14 days for MX-80 bentonite. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the influence that the physicochemical solution properties would have on Se(-II) adsorption behaviour. Adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite follows the trend of anionic adsorption, with a decrease in Rd values as the solution pH increased. There is also an ionic strength influence on the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite with a decrease in the Rd value as the ionic strength increased. This effect is not found when observing Se(-II) adsorption onto MX-80 bentonite. Final experiments with a representative groundwater, determined that the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite returned Rd values of (1.80 ± 0.10) m3·kg-1 and (0.47 ± 0.38) m3·kg-1, respectively. In support of the experiments, a surface complexation modelling approach has been employed to simulate the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite, where it was determined that two different surface complexes, ≡S_Se- and ≡SOH2+_H2 were capable of simulating Se(-II) adsorption behaviour.

  • This study demonstrates the experiment based on digital photogrammetric processing for acquiring data related to slope monitoring. To apply dose-range digital photos for monitoring road rock slopes, digital elevation models and digital orthophotos were generated and 3D modelling was conducted for the visualization on a digital photogrammetric workstation. These digital photogrammetric products can be utilized as objective and scientific data not only for surveying and analyzing the shape and characteristics of the slopes but also for extracting various engineering data for building the database of the slopes and making the safety diagnosis of the slopes.

  • 3D graphic softwares have brought design spaces beyond the limitations of Euclidean space. Moreover, as computational geometry has been considered together with algorithms, generative algorithms are being evolved. Recently 3D graphic softwares with the embedded generative algorithms allow designers to design free form curves and surfaces in a systematic way. While architectural design has been greatly affected by the advancement of 3D graphic technology, such attention has not given in the realm of structural design. Grasshopper is a platform in Rhino to deal with these Generative Algorithms and Associative modelling techniques. This study has tried to develop a module for preliminary structural configuration using Rhino with Grasshopper. To verify the proposed concept in this study, a module for designing a basic type of suspension structure is introduced.
