  • Since the mechanical strength and stiffness of wire-woven bulk Kagome (BK) have been theoretically estimated by assuming that WBK is composed of straight struts, the analytical solutions occasionally give substantial errors as compared with the experimental results. The struts of WBK are helically formed, which results in errors in the estimations In this study, for accurately predicting the mechanical properties of WBK, the effects of waviness and brazed part are taken into account for estimating the strength and stiffness of WBK. The results are compared with the measured experimental results and the results estimated by a finite element analysis performed on a unit cell under periodic boundary conditions (PBC).

  • 3-D orthogonal woven carbon/Al composites were fabricated using a pressure infiltration casting method. Especially, to minimize geometrical deformation of fiber pattern and $Al_4C_3$ formation, the process parameters of the minimum pressurizing force, melting temperature, delay and holding time of molten aluminum pressurizing was optimized through the PC-controlled monitoring system. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) was utilized to measure the effective elastic constants of 3-D orthogonal woven carbon/Al composites. The CTE measurement was conducted using strain gages in a heating oven.

  • Ultra light metal structures have been studied for several years because of their superior specific stiffness, strength and potential of multi functions. Many studies have been focused on how to manufacture ultra light metal structures and optimize them. In this study, we introduced a new idea to make sandwich panels having octet truss cores. Wires bent in a shape of triangular wave were assembled to construct an Octet truss core and it was bonded with two face sheets to be a sandwich panel. The bending & compressive strength and stiffness were estimated through elementary mechanics for the sandwich specimens with two kinds of face sheets and the results were compared with the ones measured by experiments. Some aspects of assembling and mechanical behavior were discussed compared with Kagome core fabricated from wire, which had been introduced in the authors' previous work.

  • In this paper, thermal conductivities of carbon-phenolic 8-harness satin weave composite, ACP302, were measured and predicted. In the analysis, the satin weave unit cell was identified and modeled discretely by 3-dimensional finite elements, considering the interlaced fiber tow architecture microscopically. At the unit cell boundary, the corresponding periodic boundary conditions were applied. The results were analyzed to investigate the effect of microstructural parameters such as stacking phase shifts, waviness ratio, and fiber volume fraction. The conductivities were also obtained by experiments and compared with the numerical results.

  • A stiffness model has been proposed to predict elastic constants of twisted yam composites. The model is based upon the unit cell structure, the coordinate transformation, and the volume averaging of compliance constants for constituent materials. For the correlation of analytic results with experiments, composite samples of various yam twist angles were tested, and strength and Young's modulus under tensile, compressive, and shear loading have been obtained. The sample was fabricated by the RTM process using glass yarns and epoxy resin. The correlations of elastic constants showed relatively good agreements. The model provides the predictions of the three-dimensional engineering constants, which are valuable input data for the analytic characterization of textile composites made of twisted yam.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure and predict the thermal conductivity of CF3327 plain-weave fabric composite made by Hankuk Fiber, Co. An experiment apparatus based on the comparative method has been made to measure the thermal conductivities of the composite material. Its accuracy was proved by measuring the thermal conductivity of graphite which is well-known. Micro-mechanical approaches are useful to assess the effect of parameters such as fiber and matrix material properties, fiber volume fraction and fabric geometric parameters on the effective material properties of composites. In this study, prediction was based on the concept of three dimensional series-parallel thermal resistance network. Thermal resistance network was applied to unit ceil model that characterized the periodically repeated pattern of a plain weave. The numerical results were compared with experimental one and good agreement was observed. Also, the effects of fiber volume fraction on the thermal conductivity of several composites has been investigated.

  • Periodic cellular metals (PCMs) are actively being investigated because of their excellent specific strength and stiffness, and multi-functionality such as a heat disperse structure bearing external loading. The Kagome truss PCM has been proved that it has higher resistance to plastic buckling and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. In this paper, the out-of-plane compressive responses of the WBK specimens have been measured, theoretically predicted and numerically analyzed. Three specimens of two-layered WBK are fabricated and tested for measuring the responses. The peak stress of compressive behavior and effective elastic modulus are predicted based on the equilibrium equation and elastic energy conservation. Moreover, the structure of the specimen is modeled using the commercial mesh generation code, PATRAN and the finite element analysis for the model under the compression is carried out using the commercial FE code, ABAQUS. Finally, the obtained results are compared with each other to analyze the compressive characteristics of Wire-woven Bulk Kagome (WBK).

  • Since the new millennium, truss PCMs(Periodic Cellular Metals) have drawn attention because of their superior specific stiffness, strength and multi-functionality. Prior studies have focused on the structural design and optimization. Kagome truss PCM has been proved to have the higher resistance to plastic buckling, more plastic deformation energy and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. In this study, we introduce a new idea to fabricate multi-layered Kagome truss PCM from continuous wires which can gain high strength as in piano wires and can be controlled to be defect free owing to drawing process. The relative density, the stiffness and the strength under bending and compressive load are estimated through elementary mechanics and compared with the results from experiments and FEA. The failure mechanisms are analyzed, and also mechanical performance and production are discussed.

  • 'Digilog Book' integrates advantages of existing paper book and immersive digital contents in augmented reality environment, which enables users to feel physical touch and get additional multisensory feedback. As a high level authoring user interface, 'ARtalet' provides an intuitive way to make Digilog Book through 3D user interface in augmented reality environment. This paper mentions trajectory inserting and editing methods of 3D objects, then combining method of the trajectory. 3D object is selected by camera tracked prop, and then transformation matrix relative to book plane is stored in real time based on timeframe. The saved trajectory is managed as templates, and user can make various compositions of trajectories. We expect that suggested methods can enhance interest of readers.
