  • There are still many difficulties in developing techniques for modifying or transforming the flickering of motion capture data or in modifying motion capture data in such a way that suits the animation timing sheet. There is a problem in the existing method of modifying motion capture data. It requires almost same time as in the key frame animation work by a very skilled animator or even more time in modifying. It is believed that this kind of problem can be a basis for a more effective problem-solving method through creating the key animation data node and direct blend layer and replacement layer nodes. This study presents a new method which enables to modify animation data in a nonlinear way without modifying the existing animation data by creating an animation layer node for a direct connection to the animation node. 'Maya' API will be utilized in order to realize this method and the research range will be limited to 'Maya' 3D software which is generally used in motion picture and animation films. According to the results of this study, the new method is much more intuitive than the nonlinear one and does not require the preceding working of making animation clips. In addition, it has enabled to modify flickering and to extract key frames, and due to the compatibility with other programs, it has been possible to modify motion capture data by creating a direct layer node. Finally, in this study, the existing method of modifying animation will be examined, compared and analyzed.

  • In spite of lots of differences in the production process of film animation, the animating method through computer is not much different between game animation and film animation. It is because the principles of film animation are also emphasized for the production of game animation. This study aims to consider the line of action showing the direction of movement and flow of energy among many considerations for the character pose work in case when producing game animation. Starting from the basic theory of drawing, the line of action plays a role of bible in the pose work including cell animation and 3D animation. After examining the theoretical background through preceding researches in order to understand the application of the line of action to the pose work of game characters, the poses of hero characters of a 3D online game 'Over Watch' were collected and then lines were directly drawn to analyze them. And as a result, the pose of characters with simple and clear 'Line of action' was good. This study aimed to consider the expression techniques of character pose in the production of game animation, which is expected to be used as an important reference for game animators at work.

  • The current 3D CG animation pipe line, which is the production system, does not have an effective solution that all animation departments are able to start their jobs independently against other animation departments. It is generally acknowledged that we could not do animating task before the modeling and set-up task. This kind of process has caused loss of labour. We could expect lasting problems which is stopping marking animating process before the previous process done again in case of requiring editing the jobs which are modeling and set-up. We could solve these "bottleneck" situation with "master character" defined as standard, so that animate and retake the job independently against other departments. These new process could accelerate the animation pipe line system.

  • The current software for creating and editing animation offers the possibility of dividing variable objects into layers. This paper suggests a method to render and edit each of right and left layer in the process of creating a 3D stereoscopic animation. It is possible to apply a variety of effects to left and right images and to adjust the gap of binocular parallax through this method so that wider variation of images and richer sense of depth can be produced. In addition, this method offers freedom of deleting and inserting an object, controlling size and position of the object and adjusting the gap of binocular parallax. Thus, new sense of depth can be obtained. This method shows the results to apply various effects on the 3D stereoscopic image and to reduce visual fatigue rather than the method to render simultaneously both of left and right layer.

  • This paper presents vision-based 3D facial expression animation technique and system which provide the robust 3D head pose estimation and real-time facial expression control. Many researches of 3D face animation have been done for the facial expression control itself rather than focusing on 3D head motion tracking. However, the head motion tracking is one of critical issues to be solved for developing realistic facial animation. In this research, we developed an integrated animation system that includes 3D head motion tracking and facial expression control at the same time. The proposed system consists of three major phases: face detection, 3D head motion tracking, and facial expression control. For face detection, with the non-parametric HT skin color model and template matching, we can detect the facial region efficiently from video frame. For 3D head motion tracking, we exploit the cylindrical head model that is projected to the initial head motion template. Given an initial reference template of the face image and the corresponding head motion, the cylindrical head model is created and the foil head motion is traced based on the optical flow method. For the facial expression cloning we utilize the feature-based method, The major facial feature points are detected by the geometry of information of the face with template matching and traced by optical flow. Since the locations of varying feature points are composed of head motion and facial expression information, the animation parameters which describe the variation of the facial features are acquired from geometrically transformed frontal head pose image. Finally, the facial expression cloning is done by two fitting process. The control points of the 3D model are varied applying the animation parameters to the face model, and the non-feature points around the control points are changed by use of Radial Basis Function(RBF). From the experiment, we can prove that the developed vision-based animation system can create realistic facial animation with robust head pose estimation and facial variation from input video image.
