A Fully Programmable Shader Processor for Low Power Mobile Devices (저전력 모바일 장치를 위한 완전 프로그램 가능형 쉐이더 프로세서)

  • In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of a general graphics shader processor without a dedicated hardware. Recently, mobile devices require the high performance graphics processor as well as the small size, low power. The proposed shader processor is a GP-GPU(General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units) to execute the whole OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics pipeline by using shader instructions. It does not require the separate dedicate H/W such as rasterization on this fully programmable capability. The fully programmable 3D graphics shader processor can reduce much of the graphics hardware. The chip size of the designed shader processor is reduced 60% less than the sizes of previous processors.

  • Most of multimedia processors for 2D/3D graphics acceleration use a lot of integer/floating point arithmetic units. We present a new architecture with an efficient ALU, built in a smaller chip size. It reduces instruction cycles significantly based on a foundation of multi-thread operation, variable length instruction words, dual phase operation, and phase instruction's coordination. We can decrease the number of instruction cycles up to 50%, and can achieve twice better performance.

  • Vector Graphics describes an image with mathematical statements instead of pixel information, Which enables easy scalability without loss in image quality and usually results in a much smaller file size compared with bitmap images. In this paper, we propose Vector Graphics Rasterizer for mobile device with scan-line edge flag algorithm. Proposed Vector Graphics Accelerator was verified with OpenVG 2D Vector image. The estimated performance of proposed Accelerator is 5 frame per second with Tiger image.

  • This paper presents a method for real-time 3D Sumi-e rendering us ing normal graphics hardware. Sumi-e is one of the traditional oriental painting styles. Most research on Sumi-e paintings has focused on 2D or :2.5D Sumi-e brushwork simulation. On these systems. complicated user's hand drawing is required to generate the image of Sumi-e effects. and it can render the 2D or 2.5D Sumi-e images only. We present an automated rendering system for 3D image of Sumi-e painting. It uses 3D common object as an input data and does not need any additional input of user brushwork. Especially for the real-time rendering. hardware-accelerated algorithm for Sumi-e rendering is newly suggested in our system. It is designed with efficiency for customer level graphics hard ware. The results of this paper show that the features of traditional Sumi-e painting are successfully modeled and that 3D Sumi-e painting is rendered in real-time effectively.

  • Based on Computer graphics molecular modeling method, quinolone derivatives as DNA-gyrase inhibitors formed stable DNA-intercalation complex with deoxycytidilyl-3',5'-deoxy guanosine[d($C_{p}G)_{2}$] dinucleotide. When d($C_{p}G)_{2}$ and d($A_{p}T)_{2}$, were compared in order to find out which DNA could form more stable DNA-Drug complex based on interaction energy($\Delta$E) and DNA-Drug complex energy, d($C_{p}G)_{2}$ resulted in lower energy than d($A_{p}T)_{2}$.

  • A software interface called CGI-K including device driver routines and graphics primitives for the grphic board "K" was designed, implemented in the Design Automation Laboratory of KAIST and installed on IBM PC/AT, using assembly and C language supported by TMS 34010 grphics processor. Several algorithms generating the graphics primitives such as box, circle, pie chord are proposed. The drawing speed of CGI-K on the graphic board K was found out to be three to ten times faster than that of the EGA for several examples. A 2-D graphics editor called GRIM (graphics input and modification) and a 3-dimensional graphics renderer called IPCHE which can draw 3-D objects were developed as two major application programs running on CGI-K. The graphics primitives supported in GRIM include polygon, box, circle, and ace. The IPCHE receives a 3-D objects data file and displays the 3-D object on the screen with hidden surface removal, shading, and perspective scaling.

A New Mavigation Method in Virtual Environment

  • This paper puts emphasis on navigation in virtual environment, which is one of the major interfaces for the interactivity between human and virtual environment in virtual reality circumstances and worlds. It proposes a new navigation method: 2d Map-Based navigation, which prevents user's spatial lost in 3D Virtual Environment. The 2D Map-Based Navigation is composed of three major processes, Constant Velocity Navigation, Collision Detection and Avoidance, and Path Adjustment. The 2D Map-Based Navigation can reduce user's difficulties and improve user's sense of presence and reality in the virtual environments. The experiment study proved that the 2D Map-Based Navigation is a very natural, straightforward and useful navigation interface in the virtual environment.

A design of a floating point unit with 3 stages for a 3D graphics shader engine

  • This paper presents a floating point unit(FPU) with 3 stages for a 3D graphics shader engine. It targeted to accelerate 3D graphics in portable device environments. In order to design a balanced architecture for a shader engine, we analyzed shader assembly instructions and estimated the performance of FPU with the method we propose. The proposed unit handles 4-dimensional data through separated two paths that are lead to general operation module and special function module. The proposed FPU is compiled as a form of the cascade FPU with 3 stages to efficiently handle a matrix operation with relatively low hardware overhead. Except some complex instructions that are executed using macro instructions, all instructions complete an operation in a single instruction cycle at 100MHz frequency. A special function module performs all operations in a single clock cycle using the Newton Raphson method with the look-up table.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to suggest objective basic data for the super graphics in the urban landscape through the quantitative visual quality analysis. For this, the image structure of super graphics have been measured mainly by questionnaries and semantic differential scle method and analyzed by the method of factor analysis, means and multiple regression. Degree of visual preference have been measured mainly by questionnaries and likert attitude scale method and finaly these data have been analyzed by using the stepwise method. The data were collected by presenting 12 super graphics photographs-4 each sample pictures from the 3 each selected districts representing typical urban landscape style(central business district, shopping district, apartment complex). Observer groups were categorized as professionals, students, the others. Result of this thesis can be summarized as fallows: 1. From all 12(3${\times}$4) sample super graphics, the value of each semantic differential scale among the observer groups were presented significant group difference. But no significant difference of the S.D. scale value were observed among central business district, shopping district and apartment complex super graphics. 2. For all experimental points, 4 types of factor have been observed. Factors covering the image of super graphics were found to be the evaluation, the intimacy, the potentiality and the tidiness. 3. Main factors of the super graphics image and factors indicating the group variations yielded high significance between areas. 4. The harmony with surrounding environment, the proper selection of super graphics subject yielded high values for all groups. Especially, the good color sense with building was the most important variable determining the degree of visual preference. 5. The urban C.B.D. super graphics obtained 5∼12 ranks of regional visual preference and the shopping district super graphics obtained 2∼11 ranks, and apartment complex super graphics obtained 1∼7 ranks.

Design of a Truncated Floating-Point Multiplier for Graphic Accelerator of Mobile Devices (모바일 그래픽 가속기용 부동소수점 절사 승산기 설계)

  • As the mobile communication and the semiconductor technology is improved continuously, mobile contents such as the multimedia service and the 2D/3D graphics which require high level graphics are serviced recently. Mobile chips should consume small die area and low power. In this paper, we design a truncated floating-point multiplier that is useful for the 2D/3D vector graphics in mobile devices. The truncated multiplier is based on the radix-4 Booth's encoding algorithm and a truncation algorithm is used to achieve small area and low power. The average percent error of the multiplier is as small as 0.00003% and neglectable for mobile applications. The synthesis result using 0.35um CMOS cell library shows that the number of gates for the truncated multiplier is only 33.8 percent of the conventional radix-4 Booth's multiplier.
