  • The massive limit of black holes (BHs) is observed as present day ten billion solar masses. We search for observational signatures of BHs that become extremely massive (EMBHs, 1-10 billion solar masses). I will report on the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) through the growth of BH mass and their dust emission strength. First, we measured 26 EMBH masses of quasars at 1

  • This paper investigates the importance of various environmental factors that have a strong influence on strawberry yields grown in greenhouse using the pattern recognition methods. The environmental factors influencing the production of strawberries were six factors such as average inside temperature, average inside humidity, average $CO_2$ level, average soil temperature, cumulative solar radiation, and average illumination. The results of analyzing the observed data using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) showed that the most significant factor influencing the strawberry production was average soil temperature, average inside humidity, and cumulative solar radiation. Second, the results of analyzing the observed data using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) showed that the most influential factors on the strawberry yields, such as average $CO_2$ level, average inside humidity, and average illumination were differently given for each farms. However, these results are based on the distance in 3D space and can be deduced from the fact that there is not a large difference between these distances. Therefore, in order to increase the harvest of strawberries cultivated in the farms, it is necessary to manage the environmental factors such as thoroughly controlling the humidity and maintaining the concentration of $CO_2$ constantly by ventilation of the greenhouse.

  • The effect of swirl flow on NOx in a nonpremixed turbulent hydrogen jet with coaxial air was studied. The swirl vane angle was varied from $30^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. The fuel jet air velocity and coaxial air velocity were varied in an attached flame region as $u_F=85{\sim}160m/s$ and $u_A=7{\sim}14m/s$. The objective of the current study was to analyze the characteristics of nitrous oxide emission in a swirl flow and to propose a new parameter for EINOx scaling. The experimental results show that EINOx decreases with the swirl vane angle and increased with flame length. Further, EINOx scaling factors can be determined by considering the effective diameter ($d_{F,eff}$) in a far field concept. The EINOx increased in proportion to the flame residence time (${\sim}{\tau_R}^{1/2.8}$) and the global strain rate (${\sim}{S_G}^{1/2.8}$).

  • The acoustic quality of a vowel is known to be mostly determined by the frequencies of the first formant(Fl) and the second formant(F2). The perceptual(or psychological) dimensions of vowel perception were examined in this study. Also the relationships among perceptual dimensions, acoustical dimensions(Fl & F2), and articulatory gestures of vowel were discussed. Using multi-dimensional scaling(MDS) technique, the experiment was performed in order to identify the perceptual dimensions of the perception of Korean vowel. In the experiment 8 Seoul standard speakers performed the similarity rating task of 10 synthesized Korean vowels. Two-dimensional MDS solution based. on the similarity rating scores was obtained. The results showed that two perceptual dimensions, D1 and D2 were correlated strongly with F2 and F1(r = -.895 and .878 respectively), and were so interpreted as 'vowel advancement' and 'vowel height' respectively. The relationship between the perceptual dimensions of vowel and the articulatory positions of tongue suggested that perception may be directly linked to production. Further research problems were discussed in the .final section.

  • The most popular technique for image retrieval in a heterogeneous collection of color images is the comparison of images based on their color histogram. The color histogram describes the distribution of colors in the color space of a color image. In the most image retrieval systems, the color histogram is used to compute similarities between the query image and all the images in a database. But, small changes in the resolution, scaling, and illumination may cause important modifications of the color histogram, and so two color images may be considered to be very different from each other even though they have completely related semantics. A new method of color feature representation based on the 3-dimensional RGB color map is proposed to improve the defects of the color histogram. The proposed method is based on the three 2-dimensional projection map evaluated by projecting the RGB color space on the RG, GB, and BR surfaces. The experimental results reveal that the proposed is less sensitive to small changes in the scene and that achieve higher retrieval performances than the traditional color histogram.

  • As the process technology scales down, an interconnection has became a major performance constraint for multi-core processors. Recently, in order to mitigate the performance bottleneck of the interconnection for multi-core processors, a 3D integration technique has drawn quite attention. The 3D integrated multi-core processor has advantage for reducing global wire length, resulting in a performance improvement. However, it causes serious thermal problems due to increased power density. For this reason, to design efficient 3D multi-core processors, thermal-aware design techniques should be considered. In this paper, we analyze the temperature on the 3D multi-core processors in function unit level through various experiments. We also present temperature characteristics by varying application features, cooling characteristics, and frequency levels on 3D multi-core processors. According to our experimental results, following two rules should be obeyed for thermal-aware 3D processor design. First, to optimize the thermal profile of cores, the core with higher cooling efficiency should be clocked at a higher frequency. Second, to lower the temperature of cores, a workload with higher thermal impact should be assigned to the core with higher cooling efficiency.

  • This study is directed toward determining the number and characteristics of psychologically meaningful perceptual dimensions required for assessing the sound quality with respect to vehicle noises, and toward identifying the acoustical and/or psychoacoustical bases underlying the preference and similarity judgments. For the purpose of analyzing the paired comparison data produced by subjective ratings we used nonmetric multidimensional scaling(MDS). The perceptual dimensions based upon preference ratings could explain 76.3 % of the variance by maximum dB(A) and sharpness acum. The correlation between objective and subjective positions of the stimuli is $R^2$=0.97(F(1,13)=195.45, p < .01), corrected $R^2$=0.93. The less the intensity of the stimulus the more becomes the subjective Position would be over-estimated relative to the objective one. The same is valid for the opposite case. The perceptual dimensions based upon similarity judgments could be accounted for 47.8 % and 23.5% of the variance, each of which might be a match for the maximum dB(A) and the sharpness acum, respectively. The correlation between objective and subjective positions of the stimuli is $R^2$=0.94(F(1,13)=92.38, p < .01), corrected $R^2$=0.87. The more the intensity of the stimulus the more becomes the subjective position would be over-estimated relative to the objective one. The same is valid for the opposite case. In other words, it is likely that the larger the amount of two stimuli which to compare would be judged similar. So far it should be further clarified that whether the relationship between preference ratings and psychological distances nay be optimized through which psycho-physical models.

  • The Crank-Nicolson isotropic-dispersion finite difference time domain(CN ID-FDTD) scheme is proposed based on isotropic-dispersion finite difference(ID-FD) $equation^{[1],[2]}$. The dispersion relation of CN ID-FDTD is derived for lossy media by solving the eigenvalue problem of iteration matrix in spatial spectral domain, in addition, the weighting factors and scaling factors of the CN ID-FDTD scheme are presented for low dispersion error. The CN ID-FDTD scheme makes the dispersion error drastically reduced and shows accurate numerical results compared to the conventional Crank-Nicolson FDTD method.

  • In this paper, the epipolar geometry, genera17y used as a pin-hole camera model, is newly adapted to our proposed method that enables the affine reconstruction of the 3D object from two projected views. The proposed method models the projective projection of inherent X-ray imaging system, obviates the need to attach artifirially constructed material on the body, and requires none of the prior-knowledge regarding to intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of two X-ray imaging systems. The optimum numerical solution is obtained by applying the least mean square estimator to corresponding points on two projected X-ray planes. The performance of this proposed method is Quantitatively analyzed using computer synthesized model of Cochlear implantation electrodes. In simulated experiments, the propnsed method is insensitive to the added random noise, the scaling factor change, the center point change, and rotational angular change between two projection planes, as well as enables the stable 3D reconstruction in least square sense even in worst testing cases.

  • Model alloys Fe-9Cr, Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni (wt. %) with 0.1 and 0.2 % Si were exposed to $Ar-20CO_2-20H_2O$ gas at $818^{\circ}C$. The undoped alloys formed a thick iron-rich oxide scale. The additions of Si reduced scaling rates of Fe-9Cr to some extent but significantly suppressed the formation of iron oxide scales on Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Carburisation also occurred in all undoped alloys, but not in Si-containing Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Protection against carburisation was a result of the formation of an inner scale layer of silica.
