Scientific volume visualization addresses the representation, manipulation, and rendering of volumetric data sets, providing mechanisms for looking closely into structures and understanding their complexity and dynamics. In the past several years, a tremendous amount of research and development has been directed toward algorithms and data modeling methods for a scientific data visualization. But there has been very little work on developing a mathematical volume model that feeds this visualization. Especially, in flow visualization, the volume model has long been required as a guidance to display the very large amounts of data resulting from numerical simulations. In this paper, we focus on the mathematical representation of volumetric data sets and the method of extracting meaningful information from the derived volume model. For this purpose, a B-spline volume is extended to a high dimensional trivariate model which is called as a flow visualization model in this paper. Two three-dimensional examples are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of this model.
Soot particles emitted from combustion processes are often coated by non-absorbing organic materials, which enhance the global warming effect of soot particles. It is of importance to study the condensation characteristics of soot particles experimentally and theoretically to reduce the uncertainty of the climate impact of soot particles. In this study, the condensational growth of soot particles in a tubular coater was modeled by a one-dimensional (1D) plug flow model and a two-dimensional (2D) laminar flow model. The effects of 2D heat and mass transports on the predicted particle growth were investigated. The temperature and coating material vapor concentration distributions in radial direction, which the 1D model could not accounted for, affected substantially the particle growth in the coater. Under the simulated conditions, the differences between the temperatures and vapor concentrations near the wall and at the tube center were large. The neglect of these variations by the 1D model resulted in a large error in modeling the mass transfer and aerosol dynamics occurring in the coater. The 1D model predicted the average temperature and vapor concentration quite accurately but overestimated the average diameter of the growing particles considerably. At the outermost grid, at which condensation begins earliest due to the lowest temperature and saturation vapor concentration, condensing vapor was exhausted rapidly because of the competition between condensations on the wall and on the particle surface, decreasing the growth rate. At the center of the tube, on the other hand, the growth rate was low due to high temperature and saturation vapor concentration. The effects of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis were not high enough to transport the coating material vapor quickly from the tube center to the wall. The 1D model based on perfect radial mixing could not take into account this phenomenon, resulting in a much higher growth rate than what the 2D model predicted. The result of this study indicates that contrary to a previous report for a thermodenuder, 2D heat and mass transports must be taken into account to model accurately the condensational particle growth in a coater.
A numerical investigation on the turbulent flows over a three-dimensional steep hill is presented. The numerical model developed for the present work is based on the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm with a non-staggered grid system. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and Shih's non-linear model are tested for the validation of the prediction accuracy in the 3D separated flow. Comparisons of the mean velocity and turbulence profiles between the numerical predictions and the measurements show good agreement. The Shih's non-linear model is found to predict mean flow and turbulence better than the Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$. Flow patterns have also been examined to explain the difference in the cavity zone between 2D and 3D hills.
Two-dimensional diffusion and kinematic hydrodynamic models have been studied for preparing the flood inundation map. The models have been tested by applying to one-dimensional dam-break problem. The results have good agreements compared with those of dynamic wave model. The diffusion wave model produces the mass conservation error close to zero. Floodwave analyses for two-dimensional floodplain with obstruction and channel-floodplain show both stable and efficient results. The model presented in this study can be used for flood inundation map and flood warning system.

An interactive computer program to design a mold cavity with the proper rigging system has been developed. In addition to the pattern and the risers generated in part 1 of this work, the various components of the gating system are generated in complete three dimensional models by a rational approach. Then they are laid interactively by the user, and united together with the pattern and the risers to result in the three dimensional model of the mold assembly. Finally, the vents and the mold box are constructed following the user's interactive specification and then the mold cavity is completed in a three dimensional geometric model by subtraction the mold assembly and the vents from the mold box. The three dimensional model of a mold cavity is useful for many related applications such as the solidification simulation for mold evaluation and the NC tool path generation for mold production.
The purpose of this study is to develop GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) acceleration technique for 2-dimensional model and to assess the effectiveness for high resolution flood simulation in wide area In this study, GPU acceleration technique was implemented in the G2D (Grid based 2-Dimensional land surface flood model) model, using implicit scheme and uniform square grid, by using CUDA. The technique was applied to flood simulation in Jinju-si. The spatial resolution of the simulation domain is 10 m × 10 m, and the number of cells to calculate is 5,090,611. Flood period by typhoon Mitag, December 2019, was simulated. Rainfall radar data was applied to source term and measured discharge of Namgang-Dam (Ilryu-moon) and measured stream flow of Jinju-si (Oksan-gyo) were applied to boundary conditions. From this study, 2-dimensional flood model could be implemented to reproduce the measured water level in Nam-gang (Riv.). The results of GPU acceleration technique showed more faster flood simulation than the serial and parallel simulation using CPU (Central Processing Unit). This study can contribute to the study of developing GPU acceleration technique for 2-dimensional flood model using implicit scheme and simulating land surface flood in wide area.

This paper describes the thermoelastic instability arising from friction heat generation in braking and proposes the finite element methods to predict the variation of temperature and thermal deformation. In a conventional disc brake analysis, heat generation is only related with wheel speed and friction material and the interface pressure between disc and pad is assumed constant. But under dynamic braking conditions, the frictional heat causes the thermoelastic distortion that leads to more concentrated contact pressure distribution and hence more and more non-uniform temperature. In this paper, to complete the solution of the thermomechanically coupled problem, the linear relation model between pressure and temperature is proposed and demonstrated in examples of a simple two dimensional contact problem. And the two dimensional model has been extended to an annular three dimensional disc model in order to consider more realistic geometry and to provide a more accurate critical speed for automotive brake systems.
Hemming is the last farming process in stamping and determines external quality of automotive outer panels. Few numerical approaches using 3-dimensional finite element model have been applied to a hemming process due to small element size which is needed to express the bending behavior of the sheet around small die comer and comparatively big model size of automotive opening parts, such as side door, back door and trunk lid etc In this study, part model assembling method is suggested and applied to the 3-dimensional finite element simulation of flanging and hemming process far an automotive front hood.

For an accurate prediction of the temperature Held induced by surface discharge of heated water into an ambient cross-flow field. a three-dimensional near-field numerical model using k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence clousure is developed Rather restricted as it is, the numerical results of the model agree well with the experimental data. The developed model simulates quite adequately the stratification, gravitational lateral spreading, and upward entrainment of thermal jet which cannot be simulated by a depth-integrated two-dimensional numerical model, as well as the interaction with cross-flow.
This paper presents a two-dimensional attention-based long short-memory (2D-ALSTM) model for stock index prediction, incorporating input attention and temporal attention mechanisms for weighting of important stocks and important time steps, respectively. The proposed model is designed to overcome the long-term dependency, stock selection, and stock volatility delay problems that negatively affect existing models. The 2D-ALSTM model is validated in a comparative experiment involving the two attention-based models multi-input LSTM (MI-LSTM) and dual-stage attention-based recurrent neural network (DARNN), with real stock data being used for training and evaluation. The model achieves superior performance compared to MI-LSTM and DARNN for stock index prediction on a KOSPI100 dataset.
